Legacy Wolves
Author: Sora No Waki

INTRODUCTION

There was a tale passed through generations, reaching the 21st Century, about a group of werewolves’ special mutation that brings out dormant abilities from a family’s genetic line. They were said to be marked and blessed by the moon goddess for they were the first of her followers. They were given the title of Legacy Wolves, keeping up their tradition and passing on their special traits through their children.

Yet, as centuries passed by, due to their power the group was viewed as a broodmare, only there to keep a line pure and blessed. Due to this, the endangered group of wolves was forced to hide, away from natural werewolf society. Some had eventually forgotten the trait within them, living their life as normal human beings.

There was one family though, that valued their tradition far greater than the rest of their kind. The sole family who still kept up with their belief was the Vailant family, a matriarchal family. It was rare for a legacy family to give birth to two legacy wolves, most of their ancestors only gave birth to a single child.

And yet, the current matriarch of the Valiant clan was blessed in birthing two healthy baby girls, both blessed as legacy wolves. As expected of the family’s heiresses, the two girls were brought up educated with their ways, surprisingly enough the girls were accepting of the traditions that their family holds

“Come out, Come out, Wherever you are little wolf.” A small inaudible whimper left her lips as she pushed herself further into the cupboard as the thundering footsteps and vile scent of a stranger permeated the whole air. She was afraid, her whole body was trembling and she wanted nothing more but her sister and her parents.

She didn’t know how it came to be but the moment she heard her sitter’s yell of ‘Hide’ before a gunshot echoed through the entire house, she climbed out of her bed before running to a secret cellar of the house, mostly used for food storage

The seven-year-old little girl had fallen sick and was left alone at home with a trusted sitter, while the family, particularly her mother and sister were in town to buy supplies and medicine for her. Her father was out of town, on a job, and won’t be home till the end of the week.

“They’re not here.” She heard a voice say, far too close to her hiding spot for her comfort. Another voice echoed through the house but this time she couldn’t clearly hear what was being said. A wince left her body when loud spontaneous crashes erupted in the house, almost deafening her poor sensitive ears. She tried her best not to cry or make any loud noise, using her hands to cover her ears and biting her lips to keep herself as silent as possible.

“Let’s go.”

The little girl didn’t know how long she had stayed in the cellar, sick, trembling, and afraid but she kept herself awake no matter how tired she was, no matter how much her sick body screamed at her to lay down and rest.

She waited and waited until she heard a familiar voice, using the last ounce of strength she had, she yelled for her mother at the top of her lungs. Her last memory of that day, before her consciousness started slipping, was the familiar voice of her mother frantically shouting her name.

“Skye!”
