Chapter 2 The Person I Loved Was Gone

Author: Jasper Crowe
My body had already been stewed until it was completely tender, my flesh separating from bone.

Even though I was no longer in pain, that agony seemed carved into my soul. I knew right then that I would never be able to forget it, even for a second.

I called out the system. "When can I return to my original world? I can't bear to stay here even for a moment longer!"

Natalie treated Michael attentively, remembering every tiniest detail about him with utter devotion.

Michael had also grown accustomed to accepting her care.

I impatiently asked the system, "How long do I still have to stay in this world? I've had enough of watching their lovey-dovey act!"

The system patiently comforted me and replied, "Host, the main system is currently undergoing updates and maintenance. You will only be able to return to your original world in a month."

I was not from this world, and neither was Natalie.

The technological advancement of our original world was far beyond this one.

In our original world, she had turned into a vegetable after a terrible car accident. So, I sought out a tech company cooperating with Tyroth and participated in their project in order to gain the chance to project Natalie's weak consciousness into different lower-level worlds.

Then, I used the device to traverse through these words to stimulate her emotions and help restore her to her full consciousness.

I hoped that she could awaken in the original world through this method.

This was supposed to be our final world. However, I had never expected that she would fall in love with someone else in this world, even going so far as to boil me alive.

In that split second, I felt that all the time I had spent trying to revive her had been such a waste of effort.

The butler reminded Natalie again, "Ms. Brooke, that room is starting to smell."

Natalie was puzzled.

After a while, she clicked her tongue in disgust, "Felix is so gross. I locked him up, and he's just relieving himself inside? Is he deliberately trying to get back at me?"

Michael said benevolently, "You should let Felix out. After all, he is still your husband. You shouldn't hold a grudge because of something so minor. You guys shouldn't fight because of me."

Natalie became upset upon hearing his words as she kicked the table leg in an attempt to vent her frustrations.

"That jealous fool turned your hand bright red with that boiling soup. God, my heart nearly stopped when I saw it happen. I was so afraid that you'd be in agony! How could you forgive someone who's wronged you like that?"

I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

Michael returned to the country on the day of the Moon Festival. When Natalie found out, she immediately abandoned me and went to the airport to pick him up.

It was already late at night by the time they got home. That was when Michael started making remarks about how he hadn't eaten dumplings in a long time.

"But you've been driving for so long, so you must be tired. Why not let Felix cook?"

And so, Natalie dragged me out of the bedroom and ordered me to whip up some dumplings for Michael.

I knew he was Natalie's stepfather and nominally my father-in-law. Hence, I had no choice but to reluctantly comply.

However, Michael flipped the bowl over as soon as I brought the dumplings to him, causing the dumplings to scatter all over the floor.

Then, he leaned close to my ear and whispered smugly, "How do you think Natalie will punish you when she sees I got burned?"

His scream rang out the very next second, and Natalie followed it like some sort of homing beacon.

She didn't even bother asking for an explanation before slapping me hard across the face. "Felix! I told you to cook dumplings. Yet, you used this opportunity to burn him just to vent your anger?"

As my wrist was pressed against the shattered pieces, my blood splurted everywhere. It mixed with the spilled soup and spread across the floor.

However, Natalie didn't seem to notice my predicament at all. She only had eyes for Michael as she rushed to take him to the hospital just to treat what looked like nothing more than a slightly reddened wrist.

At that moment, I knew the person I had loved for years was well and truly gone.

Natalie froze when she looked at the pictures. She shakily pulled out the photo of me from when I was eight, her face draining of all color. "Are you saying that this is Felix when he was little?"Although the photo the system took of me only showed my side profile, it was enough for Natalie to realize that it was the same person as the photo provided by the police. She made a mad dash to the study and turned on the computer, behaving not unlike a lunatic.Sure enough, she'd gotten an e-mail containing many photos of me as a child.Natalie compared them one by one. The more she looked, the more it shattered her. Eventually, she began sobbing uncontrollably. Her lawyer managed to bail Natalie out after she was taken away by the police as a suspect. No one knew what they did, but the butler became the scapegoat."I have always been dissatisfied with him, so I killed him. Ms. Brooke knew nothing about it. She has always been searching for him."Michael was waiting for her at the do

  • Let Her Fall   Chapter 7 Natalie Finally Believed It

A photo slipped out from between the pages and drifted to the floor when Natalie was flipping through her documents in the study.Initially, she paid it no mind. However, her face changed after she saw the contents of the photo. It was a photo of us when we were children. It was the very scene I had asked the system to record for me back when she promised to give me a castle. The photo was of a little girl building a castle out of sand and smiling foolishly at the little boy.Natalie recognized it too. She picked up the photo with trembling fingers. My handwriting was on the back of the photo, which she was not unfamiliar with. There were only two words, "My love."At that moment, she froze for a few seconds before bursting into laughter. She carefully traced my childish face in the photo and compared it with my adult self, finding some similarities in our features."That's just impossible. How could it be you? It absolutely can't be! What kind of joke is this?"However, her s

  • Let Her Fall   Chapter 6 Natalie's True Colors

After Michael said those words to me, I arranged for informants abroad to keep an eye on him.I didn't want any variables to appear in Natalie's life since her attachment to this world would make it impossible for her to awaken in the original world fully.According to the reports from my informants, most of Natalie's mother's inheritance was left to her. As a remarried spouse, Michael only received a very small portion of money upon her death. Due to his extravagant spending, it was no surprise that his gas soon ran empty. Now that he was penniless, he naturally had no choice but to return to the country in disgrace. However, he had set his sights on Natalie. He hadn't forgotten the way she used to look at him, with her eyes full of admiration and longing.Natalie suddenly remembered me as she apologized, "I'm sorry, Michael. It was Felix who kept clinging to me. I knew there was no possibility between us, so I agreed to marry him. I have never loved him, not even a little.

  • Let Her Fall   Chapter 5 The Promise

Michael wore a high-end luxury suit, his eyes filled with emotion."My god, Natalie, how did you think of this?"Natalie, who was dressed in a wedding gown, had gotten on one knee and said, "Michael, I told you, didn't I? You're my everything. I don't care about the past, only about the future. I want to be with you forever!"He was on the verge of tears upon hearing her words. "Natalie, I understand your feelings, but you're already married. I can't destroy your marriage."When I heard Michael say that, I was astonished by how shameless he was.I remember what happened the day Natalie and I got married. Her mother brought Michael back to the country to attend the wedding. When I went to the restroom, Michael followed me in and needled me. "Do you really think that Natalie likes you? Let's bet on it. I bet she'll come crawling to me once I pay the slightest bit of attention to her."I thought he was drunk at the time, so I brushed it off as drunken nonsense. Now that I think ab

  • Let Her Fall   Chapter 4 Late Realization

Natalie suddenly stepped back, her voice choked. "How dare you have the audacity to use a taxidermy specimen and scare me! Well done, Felix. Do you think I'd fall for this so easily? Do you really take me for a fool?"Honestly, I was torn between scoffing in amusement or straight up becoming straight up furious when I saw how wild Natalie's imagination could be.For starters, taxidermy specimens had their organs removed, but my internal organs had been burst apart in the pot. So, how could my corpse possibly be a specimen? The butler glanced at it curiously before turning away and retching once more.Clearly, he had also noticed the organs in the pot. "Ms. Brooke, there seem to be internal organs in there. It doesn't look like a specimen."When she heard him, she looked at him as if he were an idiot and asked, "How are you so stupid when you've been working for me for so many years? Felix must have put animal organs in there to confuse us. Can't you tell? This is just ridiculous!"

  • Let Her Fall   Chapter 3 Natalie Didn't Believe I Was Dead

I disregarded the risk of my soul possibly dissipating just to traverse across multiple worlds in order to save her, who was on the verge of death. In my original world, the people from the tech company tried their best to persuade me not to throw myself headfirst into this treatment."This project is still in its experimental stages. We can't guarantee that traveling across worlds won't cause damage to your mind. Due to the nature of this treatment, Ms. Brooke will assume that she's a native in those worlds."Can you guarantee that she will remain the same as before after you save her? What if she falls in love with someone else? What will you do then?"I answered firmly, "Natalie wouldn't fall in love with anyone else. I doubt she'd fail to notice how much I've sacrificed just to save her, weak consciousness or not. In this world, no one loves her more than I do!"As I recalled what I said back then, I could barely resist the urge to slam my head against the wall. Reality sure
