Zerah
This was my fault. My heart fell. Without even so much as a warning, my worst fear had unexpectedly happened. Less than a few hours ago, I’d rushed out of the office after receiving a call that my mother was in the hospital. Immediately I thought the worst and flew into a panic, barely noticing anyone as I left. It was only after getting to the hospital that my fears were eased. As it turned out, although she was still in shock, she had simply suffered a small fall and had a few simple scrapes and bruises. Because of the shock she was going to have a simple night stay in the clinic. After talking to her, I left to pick Ryan and Micah from school and had told them everything, assured that she would be discharged by tomorrow. I was confused when midway through dinner I received a knock on the door, but hadn’t expected to see Ryker of all people at my doorstep. Seeing him at my doorstep, so close to the children I wanted to keep him away from made me panic. As a result I desperately tried to make him leave, raising my voice in the process. I forgot that my son's would hear me. That was my mistake, and it was too late to fix. I could see the shock and recognition on his face. There was no way he would see their stark resemblance to him. It was over. “Mom?” I turned to my two boys, staring confused and scared. Pushing everything away I turned back and rushed towards them. “Yes? Are you two okay?” I asked, “We heard you shouting and we thought something bad happened. Is there something wrong mom?” Micah asked looking at the door where Ryker stood and my heart ached. “I was just talking to a coworker. Nothing's wrong, I promise.” I said, forcing a smile. “Go back and finish your dinner. I'll be with you soon.” They conceded , turning back to return to the living room. With them gone, the smile slipped off my face as I stood back up. I was going to have to face the music now. Turning back I found Ryker staring at me in the same spot, his eyes blazing. I moved past him and pushed him out of the entrance into the porch, shutting the door behind me. “If you want to talk, do it quietly.” I warned him before waiting in silence. “Are they mine?” he asked without hesitation and I smiled bitterly. “If I tell you no, would you leave?” My answer seemed to be the last straw for him. His face twisted into an angry grimace. “How dare you,” he bit out “I should have known about what women like you are capable of. You took advantage of me to have my children. Use them to get to me?” Rage heated up my skin. I barely withheld from slapping him again. “I have nothing to do with you or your DISGUSTING mindset.” I snapped harshly, “I never forced you to sleep with me. We were both drunk. Between you and I, who was really taking advantage?” He reared back in response but I wasn't done. “And contrary to what you think about ‘women like me’, my children have and will never be tools” I spat out, “I want nothing to do with you. So you can sleep peacefully knowing nobody gives a damn.” My chest was heaving in silence and even the night breeze couldn't cool me down fast enough. “They are my children.” Ryker said, “They should be with me.” I whipped towards him in alarm, my heart hammering in my chest. “No. You can't take them” “Can you stop me?” Ryker dared, taking steps towards me until we were a few inches apart, “I can file for custody in court. With the resources at my disposal, I will win and you can do nothing about it,” Fear crept up my skin at his clear threat. I looked into his grey eyes with blazing determination of my own. “No amount of intimidation in the world would make me give up my sons Mr Ryker Hart. Do your worst, and I'll fight back.” I said boldly, We remained in a staring match for minutes. I refused to give in until he looked away, “We’ll see,” he said, stepping back from the porch. “I'm not giving up on this until I have my way. Either submit and give me my children, or face a custody battle. The choice is yours, Zerah.” he said. I remained glaring as he turned away, stepping into his car. Only when his car was out of sight did my walls finally crumble. I broke down on the front porch, the sobs I was holding back leaving me like punches. In a matter of weeks my content life had crumbled into pieces. The life I escaped with him had been back in full force and I was forced to face Ryker everyday. And now, the worst had happened. He knew and now he was going to try to take them from me. I was going to fight. But what did I have in comparison to him? He was a billionaire and my overall boss. What was I going to do now?Zerah I woke up with a weird kind of energy in my chest. Not excitement, more like determination. Real, heavy determination.I sat up slowly, still wrapped in my sheets. Today was a weekend. Saturday to be exact. It felt surreal. All of that chaos had happened within a few days. And it was far from the end.Everything that happened yesterday kept playing in my head, the parking lot, the flash drive, Robinson’s men smashing it, Ryker's apology.I pushed away that last thought, looking at my closed laptop where the video file remained. I had gotten the evidence to help Emilia and get rid of Robinson's propped reputation. It wasn't enough. The video was good proof of Robinson's misconduct and blackmail to Elena. But what did that have to do with Ryker? Nothing, not directly. If I really wanted to help clear Ryker’s name, I’d need something that tied to him, to that night. And I had to find it fast.My hands clean ved around the sheets. He had admitted his mistakes to me last night, bu
ZerahI froze in place, my heart skipping a beat. I could tell he did as well. Shock wracked me as I processed the sight of him.His tall frame filled the space, hand was raised halfway to the door, like he was about to knock.I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath catching in my throat. When did he come back? What was he doing here, at my doorstep? What did he want? A million questions swirled in my mind, but I couldn't form any words. It felt like a dangerous case of Deja Vu. Only last night, this situation happened, him drunk and me, angry. He'd once sworn to never touch my bedroom doorstep after that one drunken night six years ago, yet now he'd come to it not once but twice.Unlike last night however, there was no rancid stench of alcohol. No half lidded, unstable frame. His eyes were clear. He wasn't drunk and didn't seem to have touched a lock of alcohol. Good. The confirmation made my gaze roam even further. His shirt was wrinkled, a far cry from the pristine lo
ZerahThe drive back to my home, if one could call it that, seemed to span an eternity in the silence. My hands were tightly clenched around the steering wheel. The echoes of the panic I'd felt in the parking lot earlier still rang through me. I couldn't deny that I was slightly shaken, but it wasn't jarring. Not when i'd expected it. Not when I'd already been warned.FLASHBACK: THE COFFEE SHOP I stood up to leave when Elena suddenly grabbed my arm. “Wait,” she said, her voice more urgent. My breath hitched as she pulled me back, leaning in.“Sit down.” She whispered an urgency in her tone that made me alarmed. What was wrong? My gut coiled in anxiety as I obeyed.“There's no way he doesn't know about this meeting. With the people following me, he… he'll probably have predicted why I'm here.” she said, her expression shifting into something unreadable.“If he knows, then he might go after you. He might try to take...” she trailed off, but the insinuation was clear. My skin pric
Zerah My gut tightened at her words. Before I could reassure her, she raised her hand with a bitter smile. “I know it won't, this is just a precaution. I'm grateful for this and for you…but I'm still selfish, and I have my fears and doubts. If it comes crashing down, not just me but my family will be hurt. I have no doubt that he's capable of that,” she said, “So please, on the probability that this doesn't pan out and he wins, I need you to promise me that nobody will know that I'm involved. We never spoke of this and I never gave you that drive. Even when this goes public, promise me that I'll remain anonymous. Can you do that?” I stood there, frozen, as Elena's words hung in the air. As I looked into her eyes, I saw the depth of her anxiety. The decision solidified. I had promised to help her and protect her. I also had to ensure that she wasn't caught in the crossfire. I nodded. “I promise. You'll remain anonymous,” I promised sincerely. There was the question of what e
ZerahFor a moment, it was like I'd stopped breathing. Shock ran through me like a tidal wave as I replayed those words over again in my head. A video of Robinson threatening her. A piece of substantial evidence. It may be one incident, one piece of evidence, but a single incident was all that was needed to crumble someone's reputation. For someone like James who was in his high, propped up by the press at this time, it would change everything. This could be everything we needed. “Zerah.”I was snapped back to reality at the call of my name. Looking back at Elena, her dark eyes clearer, it was like a weight had been lifted from my chest.“Where is it?" I asked. My voice came out slightly more eager than expected but it was too late to back track.Elena's face shifted a fraction. She leaned back in her seat and panic filled me. “Wait. I'm sorry if I startled you. I didn't mean to.” I rushed out. I couldn't let my abrupt reaction drive her away. Her only response was a brief shak
Ryker“Mr. Davidson!” Jason snapped, quickly pulling me out of my trance. I blinked back to reality to meet the glow of sundown. It was already evening, I noted listlessly.Hours had passed, nearing the full day, yet nothing had been solved.Turning back to the two people in my office, Jason paced frantically."Alright. Luckily, we've managed to contain it here at the office. Barely,” he glanced at me before continuing, “Since Mr Davidson has already talked to the employees, assuring them that all will be taken care of. It's only right that we do so.”“And how do you suggest we do that?" Evelyn, sitting on the other chair, raised an eyebrow. Despite flagellating me in the meeting before, she had arrived here unannounced, no doubt for her own interests. “Do we lock ourselves up? Sounds like a plan." She smiled, her voice dripping with skepticism.Jason's jaw ticked as he turned to her.“Mrs Rodriguez, this is neither the time nor the place for scorn. We're both directors here and y
