I looked down at my plate and moved my French toast from side to side on my plate. I didn’t know how to form the right words. It was annoying her. “Just spit it out” she exclaimed. I jumped at the random outburst. “He is my new Chief!” I squeaked. I saw his name on his ID, and I recalled the command contact slip, my Lieutenant handed me. “Katie, I almost slept with my Chief! I can get in so much trouble for fraternization! What do I do? You have to help me. I have never gotten in trouble in the military before.” I was starting to freak out. “You have never gotten in trouble in life before, not just the military” Katie retorted. That made me stop my oncoming panic attack. It was true. I’ve never gotten in any trouble. Never got suspended in school, never stole anything. Never did drugs or underage drinking. As we were driving back to the base, I saw lightning flash. Yep, a storm was definitely happening. Then came the thunder. I jumped. Damnit. Why am I scared of loud booms? I can handle guns, no problem, but thunder, freaks me out. Same with fireworks. They scare the hell out of me. Ever since I was little. The rain started pouring down as we were on the interstate heading towards base. We weren’t far from base. 30 minutes, tops, with no traffic. The sky got darker, and I was trying to not freak out from the thunder. Katie pulled up to base, and showed her ID, and my ID to the security guards on duty. The nodded and we proceeded onto base. I felt bad, they had to be out in the storm.She pulled up to the lodge, and under the awning by the main doors into the lobby, and parked. Waving goodbye to her, I jumped out of the truck, at the same moment a loud roar of thunder happened. I squeaked and ran into the lobby. I am sure Katie was laughing because she knew I hated thunder

I sat on the bed and tore into the envelop. I was shocked when I pulled out the folded paper, and a set of keys. My apartment was ready! I got excited, but as soon as I jumped with joy, I jumped from the roar of thunder. I cowered. I was excited to finally have a place to call my own, instead of slumming it in a hotel on base. The paper stated the apartment building, the building manager contact information, what gas company and electric company the property uses, various other details I needed, and which apartment is going to be mine. Apartment 1526. I was in the apartment down the hall from Katie. This was going to be great.I pulled out my laptop, and started to figure out what color bedroom set, I was going to want. Around 6:20, Katie sent me a message and told me she was pulling onto base, and to meet her outside. I jumped up and put my blouse on and made sure to do a final glance over in the mirror, before brushing my teeth quickly. I lost track of time watching the news, and the weather forecast for today. I have to say, I looked good. I felt good in this uniform, and I was happy I get to wear it again. My last command, we didn’t wear this uniform. We wore our NWUs. This uniform made me feel proper.I grabbed my wallet and my phone, shoving it into the pocket of the wallet, and made sure my ID was in the easy slip pocket, since I will have to use it to get into the building. The words, Fraternization, Captain’s Mast, Restriction, all flowed through my brain. I was trying to keep my exterior appearance as calm as possible. My heart, on the other hand, was beating so hard and rapidly, that that’s all I could hear in my ears. My breathing was normal though. So at least I could keep my façade going. “Uh, Hi Chief, what can I do ya for?” He laughed as he steadied me, so I didn’t fall over. “I heard LT said no PT for you today, and that you didn’t have to come back after lunch, so you can go move into your new apartment.” I nodded. I sighed, great, they talked about me, since they work in the same office, and I am in the office across the hall. “Yes, Chief. That’s right. I also noticed he hadn’t assigned me a duty section yet, so maybe I have a free week, besides working. I have a lot I have to get done, since transferring here to Florida. I have to make it to the DMV, and then hopefully find a car, this week. Lucky for me, Katie and I ate from the salad bar, instead of ordering food from the galley, so there was no waiting for our lunch. It gave us plenty of time, to go to the lodge, grab my bags, and check out, then take me to the apartment building, and her still have time to get back to base and back to work. She helped me bring my bags up to my new apartment, and she looked around. Same layout at hers, but with newer paint, carpets, and furniture. “Sis, how much did it cost to have it come furnished?” she asked. “Umm, I want to say 3 grand.” I shrugged. “They are going to have higher than normal rent payments until it’s paid off. But I am planning on writing a check just to have it paid off, and then just have my regular rent payments, each month. At 4:00 on the dot, my doorbell sounded, and I got up from my place at the counter and peeked through the peep hole. It was a delivery person. I unlocked the door and opened it up. I smiled and started getting handed my bags of groceries. I had 17 of them. I felt bad, so I handed the guy a $40 tip. A $20 for him and a $20 for the other kid helping him. I thanked them and closed my door. I was putting the groceries away when my phone started going off. Whoever it was, didn’t have an assigned ringtone because it was my main ringtone. After our impromptu trip to Walmart, Katie and I were heading back to the apartment building and my phone buzzed, letting me know I had a text message. I looked down at my phone and saw it was from Tyler. I totally forgot to send him a message giving him my address. I was kicking myself in the ass mentally. Whoops. I guess I got so caught up in setting up my kitchen, and knowing I needed things for the apartment still, that I just forgot. I’m sure he wouldn’t be mad. I texted him my address and which apartment I lived in. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” That was his response. I was confused by that, so I texted back. “Why would I kid you?
