Elio

A man should know his own face before he asks other men to fear it.

I studied mine in the mirror the way I study everything — for weaknesses.

It gave me back exactly what I gave it. Dark suit. White shirt, collar open. The ink my father hates running down past the collar and the cuffs, the marks of a life he pretended we didn't lead. I fixed one cuff. Then the other. I did not smile, because the men I was about to walk among have learned to be more afraid of me when I don't.

"Looking good, boss." Marco's reflection appeared behind mine, leaning in the doorway with his tie already loosened, a glass of my wine already in his hand.

Marco was my consigliere, or right-hand man. He'd been with me since I was nineteen. He'd taught me which knife to use at dinner and which to use under the table.

"You look like a don. A real one. Il padrone."

I scoffed at his words. "I’m just a. man going to work."

"Same thing, with you." He came closer, and his voice dropped into something warmer, something I'd trusted for ten years without ever once examining why. "Your father would be proud, Elio. Three months in a city that wasn't ours, after everything back home, and look what you've built. The clubs. The docks. The hotels. Half the Lower East Side already knows your name and the other half is about to. He'll hear about tonight. He'll be proud."

Three months. That's how long it had been since I left Italy in the dark with a scandal at my back and a name that was suddenly worth less than the paper my father printed it on. He'd sent me here to disappear. Prove yourself, he'd said, the way you say it to a son you've already half-decided to bury. Build something on your own, if you can.

So I had. Alone. That was the part that mattered. Alone.

"He'll hear about it," I agreed, and reached for my watch. "Is the car downstairs?"

"Brandon's been out there twenty minutes. Kid drives like his grandmother but he doesn't talk, so." Marco set the wine down. "Ride with me. We'll go together, I'll catch you up on the dock numbers on the way—"

"No." I said it easily. "Rest. You've been running since dawn. I'll see you at the club later."

I shrugged on my jacket and left him standing in the gold light.

I watched as the city smear past the glass window of the escalade. Wet streets, steam coming up through the grates like the whole island was breathing, and I let myself feel, for one private minute, something close to satisfaction.

Brandon did drive like a grandmother, but I didn't mind. The boy kept his eyes forward and his mouth shut, which is the single most valuable skill a young man in my employ can have. I made a note to pay him more.

Soon enough, we arrived at the club. The Gilded Cage sat on a corner that used to belong to nobody and now belonged to me.

The place will open tonight. But it also, as of this exact moment, had several problems.

"There's no sign," I said, getting out of the car.

A slew of bodyguards appeared out of nowhere to greet me, and I simply walked past them.

Laura, the club manager, met me at the door with a tablet pressed to her chest like a shield. She runs the place, and she runs it well, which is why she still works for me. "The sign's on the truck. It goes up soon. I promise you, by the time the doors open you'll see the name from three blocks away." She fell into step beside me as I went in, already reading off her list. "Liquor's stocked. Kitchen's staffed. We're light two singers for the rotation — one quit, one's a no-show — but I've got auditions running this afternoon and I'll have the late slots filled before—"

I had stopped listening.

There was a girl on the stage.

She was small, and pale, and wearing a plain black dress. She had long blonde hair that fell just around her elbows. She had her eyes closed, and she was singing to an empty room like the empty room had broken her heart and she'd forgiven it anyway.

An old song. One my mother used to play on Sundays, before my mother became a thing we didn't talk about.

I don't normally get lost. I want to be clear about that. I’m a man who always knows where the exits are, who is counting the people in a room before I've finished entering it, who has never in his adult life forgotten for a single second exactly what he is and what that costs. That is the only reason I am still breathing.

But for one note — one held, impossible, climbing note near the end of that song — I forgot all of it.

This girl was… alluring.

Then I caught myself. I always catch myself.

"Her," I said. "If she's the no-show's replacement, she stays. Put her on the late set."

“Oh, but she’s a bit young and inexperienced—” Laura tried to argue, but I simply shot her a look. "I mean — of course, sir. She’ll do the late set tonight."

I felt the girl's eyes find me up on the balcony then. She'd opened them, bright blue eyes, mid-song, and somewhere in that pale, startled face she'd located me in the dark watching her. I didn't look away. I have never seen the point of pretending not to want a thing. She flushed and dropped her gaze to the back wall.

Hm. A shy one.

I let her finished her song with her gaze fixed anywhere else but me. Because watching a frightened thing decide to keep singing anyway told me more about her than her voice already had.

"Boss." Brandon, at my elbow, low. "I've got what you asked for."

And just like that I remembered who I was.

ElioI was breathless. Lying tangled up with her in a bed that was much too small for one person, let alone two. My cóck was half buried inside her still, my seed and her juices leaking out of her, and I could not remember ever being anywhere better. It was absurd, really.I have had a great deal of what the world calls pleasure. I built an entire room out of the pursuit of it. I have spent years perfecting the mechanics of a thing and I thought I understood it completely, the way you understand an engine you've taken apart a hundred times. But here, lying with her on a bed with a metal frame that complained every time either of us breathed, lying there with her heartbeat against my ribs, I realized that I understood nothing.Everything before her had been mechanics. This was something else entirely. This had gone somewhere the vault never reached, somewhere the crop and the chain and all my careful control had never once taken either of us. I looked down at her face. Her eyes were h

DoveHe let out this grunt, this animalistic grunt. And his hands pinned mine down on the sides of my face. Then he started kissing his way down south. Starting with my neck, finding that sweet spot and sucking hard on it, leaving his mark. Then he went down to my chest, and he found each one of my nípples. They were hard and erect, lighting up at the touch of him.I was making incoherent noises and my body arched towards him. If my hands weren’t pinned down, I’d have roamed his body again. I wanted more of him. So much more.He was now kissing down my stomach and he settled in the gap between my thighs. My legs were already shaking even before he made contact. And when he did, I gasped aloud. His mouth was hot on my entrance, kissing, licking, and sucking. He took my time with me, savoring my juices and sending shocks all over my body. His tongue played with my clít, lapping at them, and at some point, he bit down on them too. It didn’t take long until I reached my first orgasm. I w

Dove“You.” I swallowed hard. “You’re leaving me?”Elio’s lips curve into a smile. A bitter one.“We’ve had a good run.” He said. “Don’t you think?”My heart was cracking inside my ribcage. Suddenly, it was hard to breathe."No," I said. “No.”The jumper was still in my hands. I looked down at it and put it in the bag, very carefully, because my hands needed something to do."Dove—""We have a contract. Our run isn’t finished."I turned around."Ninety days. That's what it says. That's what I signed. And you said you’re a man of your words." My voice was shaking and I did not care. "I've done fifty-one of them, and I am not cutting it short, and you don't get to void just because you feel like it.""I’m not doing this because I feel like it—"“Then let me stay my full term. Tell your dad I’m just a hostage serving my time. You don’t even have to see me in that house. You can throw me in any room you want.” My voice didn’t even break and it shocked me too how strong I sounded. “I’m a w

Dove"Hello, little bird."The door pulled shut behind me and the noise of the street cut out, and there we were. Him in the corner of the back seat in that black coat with the collar up, looking impossibly cool, like always. And then there’s me, half-fallen into the leather beside him, with my bag still clutched against my chest.Up front, Brandon put the car in gear and pulled out without a word. “Elio?” I gaped. "What are you doing here?"It came out less gracefully than I intended."I had a meeting in the city." His voice was perfectly even. He was looking out the window. "It finished early. I was in the area.""So you—""So I thought I’d drop in."I sat there holding my bag.I didn't believe him. Not for a second. Elio Visconti does not simply drop in. He has not done one unplanned thing in the entire time I have known him. But I also knew, with total certainty, that if I said so he would simply repeat it in exactly the same tone until the sun burned out.So I said nothing. The

DoveI looked up. Slow and afraid. And Professor Aldrich, who had sat through eleven performances without moving a single muscle in his face, he was looking at me, and there was something bright at the corner of his eye.One tear. That's all. It didn't even fall. He blinked it away almost immediately and made a note on his clipboard like nothing had happened. Then the room broke. They erupted. The whole hall, all at once, erupted with applause and shouting and someone whistling. Jessica was on her feet screaming my name, and Priya had both hands over her mouth. It rolled over me in a wave and I sat at that piano bench with my hands in my lap and let it hit me, and I thought I might come apart entirely. They liked it. God help me. They really liked it!And after the exam was over, I was mobbed by a group of students."That was insane, Dove—" "—the thing at the end, when it all dropped out—" "—Aldrich cried, do you understand what you did, Aldrich has never—" "Dove." Priya took both

  • Love's Darkest Cage   77. The Song

DoveI left my room at quarter past twelve.I'd chosen the simplest thing in that wardrobe. A soft grey, plain dress and navy sweater. Nothing that would make anyone look twice. And I'd washed my hair and tied it in a simple low bun and put on the barest amount of makeup, and when I checked myself in the mirror, I looked just like a normal college girl going to a music exam. That was exactly what I was going for. Once I was done, I went down through the house the way I always did. It’d been two weeks since I was free to roam the house like this. Some of the maids and guards were surprised to see me. But they bowed and greeted me back when I said good afternoon.Maria was in the upstairs hall with an armload of linens and she stopped when she saw me. "Hello, Miss Dove," she said. "Are you going out?""Just for the afternoon. I've got my exam.""Ah." She adjusted the linens and reached out and fixed a piece of my hair I hadn't fixed, and there were about nine things behind her eyes an
