JOLENE'S POV

Rebecca came home two days later, weaker but alive, and the first thing she did was study me from across the kitchen like she was trying to remember something she'd almost forgotten.

"You didn't poison me," she said finally, not quite a question.

"No," I answered carefully, bracing myself for whatever came next.

"I know," she said, and there was no warmth in it, just fact, delivered the way she delivered everything, like an audit. "I remember making that tea myself." Her eyes flicked toward the hallway, toward the direction of the west wing, and something passed over her face too quick for me to name. "I remember a lot of things people think I don't."

She didn't say anything else, just walked past me to her room, her steps slower than they used to be, but it was the first time since the wedding that Rebecca hadn't looked at me like something she wanted scraped off her shoe.

I didn't trust it. But I noticed it, the way you notice the first crack in ice you've been told is solid.

Victor moved into the guest house on the property that same week, claiming he needed to be close while he "settled Logan's affairs," though I overheard Jake tell Hailey it was really so their uncle could keep an eye on all of them, watching how the will was being honored, or dishonored, one day at a time.

I ran into him most mornings after that, always near the garden, always with two cups of coffee like he'd started expecting me before I even knew I'd be there.

"You don't have to do this," I told him one morning, taking the cup anyway because it smelled better than anything Rebecca let me drink in that kitchen.

"Do what," Victor asked, leaning against the stone railing, watching the sun climb over the hedges instead of me.

"Be kind to me. Everyone else in this house has a reason not to be."

Something flickered across his face, gone before I could name it. "Maybe I don't need a reason."

"Everyone in this family has a reason for everything," I said before I could stop myself, the bitterness slipping out before I could dress it up as anything softer.

He almost smiled at that, just the corner of his mouth. "Then maybe I'm not like the rest of this family."

I didn't know what to do with that, so I sipped the coffee instead and let the silence stretch, comfortable in a way silence rarely was in that house.

"My brother wrote to me, you know," he said after a moment, watching the garden instead of me, his voice lower now. "Before he died. Told me to watch out for someone in this house. Didn't give a name."

My chest tightened. "Did he say why?"

"No." Victor's grey eyes finally met mine, steady, unreadable. "But I have a feeling I've found her."

I didn't answer that. I couldn't. My throat had gone tight and my coffee had gone cold in my hands.

That evening, Jake found me in the hallway outside my room, his tie loose, his eyes tired in a way that made him look almost like the boy I used to know in the library, before all of this, before the will, before Maya.

"You've been spending time with my uncle," he said, and it wasn't quite an accusation, but it wasn't nothing either.

"He's been kind to me," I said simply. "Something new around here."

Jake's jaw flexed, the muscle jumping under his skin. "Be careful with him, Jo."

"Why?" I asked, tilting my head, something reckless rising in me that I hadn't felt since the wedding. "Jealous?"

The word left me before I could stop it, and for a second, something raw crossed his face before he shut it down completely, folding it away like he always did.

"No," he said, too fast. "I just know him."

"You know Maya too," I said quietly, "and look how that's going."

I hadn't meant to say it. But I didn't take it back either, and I watched it land, watched something in him flinch even as his face stayed still.

Jake stared at me for a long moment, something warring behind his eyes, something that looked a lot like the boy who used to sneak me dessert and a lot less like the man who planned to divorce me in a year and marry someone else in the same breath.

"Goodnight, Jolene," he said finally, voice rough, and walked away before I could see whatever it was he didn't want me to see.

I stood there long after his door clicked shut, my heart doing something complicated and unwanted, something I didn't have a name for yet.

Three hundred and thirty-six days left.

And for the first time since the wedding, I wasn't sure which man in that house scared me more, the one who still had feelings for me buried under all that ice, or the one who was slowly, quietly, learning how to make me feel wanted.

JOLENE'S POVThe cab smelled like stale cigarettes and regret.I sat with my knees pressed together, my sister's old cardigan clutched over the dress I hadn't changed out of. Every red light felt like a personal insult, every siren in the distance twisting my stomach tighter. I kept replaying it in my head, the cup shaking in my hand, Rebecca's body hitting the floor, Maya's finger pointed straight at me like I was already convicted.By the time I got to the hospital, my hands were shaking so hard I nearly dropped my purse at the reception desk."Rebecca Henderson," I told the nurse, breathless. "She was brought in maybe twenty minutes ago."The nurse checked her screen, unbothered by my panic, the way people who see tragedy every day become numb to other people's worst nights. "Family can wait in the fourth floor lounge."Family… I almost laughed. Three years caring for Logan and one month married to his son, and I still didn't know if that word applied to me in this house.I found t

JOLENE’s POVThree Weeks LaterIt felt like the living beings in this house learnt how to hurt me without making any noise. It had been twenty-two days since the gala, three hundred and forty-three left on the contract and I counted it like I had no other job.Every morning started the same, I made coffee at 6:30 because Rebecca liked it black and she liked it to burn her tongue.I'd set her cup on the island and step back, then the usual mockery and insults. But they didn't hurt more than the footsteps that'd come from the west wing. The first sounds were soft, Maya's bare foot and then heavier ones which were Jake's.Maya always came in with her arms already around him, and when we'd accidentally crosspath, she'd put on a smile that explains she was taking over.“Morning, babe,” she would murmur against the back of his shirt. And Jake would turn, just a little, and his hands would come up to cover hers.He never did that with me and I thought I'd be fine by it but I wasn't, rather

JOLENE’s POV"Are you suggesting an open marriage?"He cocked a brow at me and then wipe his nose like I struck him. “The will says we have to be married for a year,” he continued, voice going cold again. “It doesn’t say anything about me being faithful.”“You can have your own rooms. Your own life,” he resumed moving his eyes everywhere but me. “But when we’re in public, we’re a unit. When we’re at home...” He gestured vaguely toward the second floor. “She stays in the west wing.”I turned blind not even knowing where to begin.“And if I have a problem with that?”“Then you forfeit the five million.” His answer came immediately with no hesitation. “And Stacy’s surgery debt becomes yours. All fifty thousand of it.”Stacy.My younger sister. In a hospital bed waiting for a kidney that Logan had paid for.I understood then. This wasn’t about Logan wanting us together. This was about Logan chaining us both.Jake must have seen it on my face because his expression changed. He walked to t

TWO WEEKS LATERJOLENE’s POVIt’s been two weeks since the will reading. The table sat in a graveyard hush and the only clink of silverware was permitted to sound. And as always, I didn't exist. My fingers still itches me from the hot water that accidentally poured on me.Not until Rebecca threw a spoon over the chowder soup just as I was about to take a sit.“Jolene.” Her voice sounded like a ticking bomb. I'd anchored myself for the hit, daring myself not to look into her eyes.“This soup is lukewarm. Do I look like someone who drinks lukewarm soup?”My fingers tightened. Three years caring for Logan and I’d never burned a meal. Now, one week as a wife and I couldn’t pour water right.I kept my head down, hands shaking around the ladle. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Henderson. I’ll heat it right away.”“You’ve been heating it wrong for three years,” Hailey snorted from across the table twirling a noodle on her fork. “Maybe it’s not the soup. Maybe it’s you.”Shame scalded me. The servants here

JOLENE’s POV“My last minute discussions with Jolene before I finally decided to pull off the life support made me understand how much this family needs her, how much you need her Jake. Even though we were rich, you’ve had a rough childhood with I and your mother never really being there. It’s led to you being commitment shy, drifting through life and women like the wind.”I swallowed. Where the heck was this going? Jake had removed his hand that was on my knee, now he’d fisted it. I could tell from the clench in his jaw that he was angry.I could only hope his anger was directed at his father.“Jake, you only get everything if you get married to Jolene tomorrow, a contract marriage. Give it a year, if after one year, you’re sure you want to leave, then you can get a divorce. It’s impromptu, I know, but I can’t give you time to talk yourself out of it, now can I?”I shook my head, swallowing as Jake shot to his feet. “I don’t want it! I don’t freaking want any fortune that’ll dictate
