LOGINAfter the bankruptcy of their company, Carmine Clark had no choice but to do the most risky thing that she could do--to pretend as the wife of the enemy of their family and the notorious mafia boss named Maxwell Crivello.

“Working again? It’s already late, you know. You should at least know how to take some rest,” my childhood best friend, Kyle Sterling said to me over the phone.
I didn’t take my eyes off my laptop as I answered him, “I don’t have time to rest when our company is clearly going down. I have to work extra hard so grandpa would be proud of me and assign me as the new director of Clarke Financial Group.”
“I mean, you are the only grandchild he has so of course, you’re the only option.”
“Not really. You know my cousin Portia right? I heard she’s also working extra just so she could be the next director of the company. It’s not like I will let her do that. I didn’t study hard and worked my ass of all my life just so she could steal my dream like that.”
Kyle chuckled, “That’s the Carmine I know. You don’t really know how to give up.”
“Of course. I would rather die than lose that position. I will do everything for the company.”
“Right. That’s the Carmine Clarke I know.”
After finishing all the tasks that I have to do, I finally decided to leave the company building. It was already past twelve midnight and I could feel my whole body aching probably from overworking myself again.
When I got home, I decided to just cook some instant noodles and fried egg for dinner before going to bed as what I usually do. I moved out from my parents’ house when I graduated in college and started working as the vice president of our company. My grandpa assigned me as the vice president simply because he knew I would do well and so did I. Our company has a good reputation when it comes to business world. We became one of the most successful companies in the world not until an ultimate business competitor of us started taking all of our investors and stakeholders.
I was just about to close my eyes when I suddenly received a call from my mom.
“Hello, Mom?”
“Carmine, someone told me you just left the company building. Have you had dinner already?”
“Yes, I’m now on my bed.”
I heard my mom heave a deep sigh over the phone before speaking again, “Carmine, I know how much you care about our family company, but you should also love yourself. You’re already twenty-five, you’re not getting any younger sweetheart.”
“I know that, mom. I’m not getting any younger that’s why I have to do everything for the company. You also know that it’s my biggest dream, right? I know where this is going again. You’re going to ask me when I will be getting married, right?”
“You are our only daughter, so what would you expect? I still want to see my grandchildren grow up. Also, I want you to find a man who will take care of you and love you until you grow old.”
“Mom, I can take care of myself. I don’t need any other person to take care of me when I grow old.”
“But if you keep on skipping meals and deprive yourself from sleep, then I don’t think you’ll be able to grow old.”
“Fine, mom. When everything finally falls back to its right place, I promise I will go to every blind date you’ll suggest. It’s alright now? Good night, mom. I love you!”
“Honey—
“Bye!”
I leaned on my headboard as I ended the call and placed my phone on the side table.
My mom really has this habit of arranging blind dates for me even back when I was in high school. Probably because she’s too afraid that her one and only daughter would end up growing old alone.
And maybe she’s actually right about that. I don’t mind growing old alone as long as I will be the director of our company. I would rather grow old alone but successful than be with a guy that would only make me his housewife.
Even when I was still in middle school, the only thing that I was looking forward to was to become the next director of our company and the most successful director in the country. I strived so hard and not even once did I fail on being the on the highest rank in our class.
That is why now that I am old enough, I won’t stop working my ass off until I reach the top.
And no one can ever stop me from doing that.
“If we don’t work harder than we already do, the company will go bankrupt and all of us will lose our jobs. I’m sure you don’t want that to happen, so make sure you won’t make a mistake when doing the tasks that I have given you.”
“Yes, Miss Vice President Carmine.”
I nodded my head, “Alright. All of you now may leave and proceed to your work.”
As soon as they all left the conference room, I leaned on my swivel chair and started massaging my temples. Just when I am too close to getting what I want that the company suddenly started going downhill.
I was about to eat the lunch that my mom packed for me when I suddenly received a call from my dad, telling me to go to my grandfather’s office.
I immediately closed the lunchbox and stood up. I could feel my heart beating so fast as I started walking towards grandpa’s office. It was as if something bad was going to happen.
Carmine’s POV“Take care, okay? Make sure to enjoy your day together,” Sylus said to me and Natalia while we were preparing to leave for our mother and daughter bond.Natalia enthusiastically nodded her head, “Yes, daddy. Mom and I will make sure to enjoy our day together!"Sylus patted her head with a smile on his face, “That’s my girl. Take care of mommy, okay?”“Yes, daddy.”I was surprised when Sylus suddenly looked at me without taking off the smile on his face. I immediately averted my gaze from him, avoiding to have an eye-to-eye contact..After what happened last night, I don’t even know how to face him without remembering it. I almost did it with him last night. He suddenly kissed me and for no apparent reason, I kissed him back.I guess I can never be alone with him again. Or maybe I shouldn’t let him be so near me again.“Babe, don’t forget to call me whenever you get the chance to or if you need anything. Enjoy your time with our daughter,” Sylus said to me, his voice was
Sylus’ POVI can’t help but steal glances at Charlotte while we were having dinner. At some point I thought she could already remember me and everything we used to do, but there are still some things that I can’t quietly understand. She moved away when I tried to lean in for another kiss as if she didn’t want what I did.She knows I am her husband, so why would she not allow me to kiss her?“Mommy, daddy, where did the two of you go?” Natalia suddenly asked, causing Charlotte to catch me gazing at her.She looked surprised upon finding out I was actually looking at her, but then she averted her gaze and looked at Natalia instead, “We went to your dad’s company and to one of his shooting ranges. He taught me how to shoot.”“Really, mommy? Dad taught you how to shoot?”“Uh-huh.”“And she learned it very quickly. Your mom is really smart, you know? Just like you.”A huge smile appeared on Natalia’s face, “Mommy, maybe if you practice more, you will be able to defeat dad when it comes to
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Sylus kept on asking me as we left his company building.I looked at him, trying to maintain a cool expression on my face, “O-Of course, I mean, I’m alright.”“I shouldn’t have brought you there. For sure you got so scared. After seeing how I torment my enemies, for sure you’d be more afraid to be alone with me now.”I forced a smile, trying to play it cool. “I’m fine, really…I just…didn’t expect that.”Sylus’ eyes narrowed, “You didn’t expect what? The violence? The bloodshed?”I shook my head, feeling a shiver run down my spine. “No, it’s just…I know that you are a powerful man, Sylus. I know a mafia boss like you have enemies. I-I don’t know…maybe it was beyond what I have imagined…”His expression softened, his eyes searching mine. “You don’t have to pretend, Charlotte. I know it’s not easy to see that side of me, but I want you to know that I will always protect you and Natalia no matter what happens.”“O-Of course, I know that.”“Would you like to
As we stepped out of the elevator, the chill of the air grew more pronounced, and I could feel the weight of the building’s dark secrets pressing down on me. Sylus led me to a narrow corridor, lined with steel doors that seemed to stretch on forever. We walked towards the door at the end of the corridor. As Sylus held the handle of the door, he turned to me and spoke, “Are you sure you want to witness it?” I nodded my head, my heart was racing with anticipation, “Y-Yes, I want to see it.” Sylus nodded, his expression was unreadable. He opened the door, and we stepped into a room that was a nightmare that came into life. The room was dimly lit, the only light coming from a series of overhead lamps that cast a harsh glare on the central feature of the room. A steel table, stained with blood and other identifiable substances. The air was thick with the stench of pain and fear. "I-Is this where you kill your enemies?" I asked him while roaming my eyes around the room. "This is w
I wore a simple white tee paired with black jeans and sneakers. Today is the day I would be accompanying Sylus to his work and I couldn’t be more excited. “You do have a thing with white tee and jeans, don’t you? You used to love wearing dresses before,” Sylus commented as soon as he saw me. I shrugged, feeling a bit of self-conscious, “I guess I just feel more comfortable in these kinds of clothing.” Sylus chuckled, his eyes scanning me up and down, “You look good, though. Maybe too good for a day in the office,” he said. His voice was low and smooth. I raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?” He stepped closer, his voice dropping into a whisper, “I mean, you’re going to distract me.” I moved away from him and averted my gaze, “L-let’s just get going.” Sylus grinned, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “Alright, let’s go now.” Why does he have to say something so cheesy every single time? It’s so annoying. “Why are they following us?” I asked Sylus when I noticed some black car
Carmine’s POVEvery time I remember how Sylus saw my naked body inside my room, I can’t help but be furious and embarrassed at the same time. Why the hell did he even enter that room without even knocking first or making sure I was wearing anything? Damn him.I never even had any boyfriend before. I can’t believe a stranger like him would be the first one to see me bare naked like that.Every single day I am in their house, something awful happens. What sickens me even more is the fact that every single day Sylus seems to discover more about me instead of me discovering more about him.I wasn’t talking while we were having our breakfast and Sylus probably notices that, so he suddenly spoke. “Later, we’re going to meet with your friends, especially your best friend Monica. She just arrived last night from England.”“M-My best friend?”“Yes. She’s been your best friend even before we met each other. She went to England last year to marry her boyfriend.”I nodded my head, “O-Okay.”If s
