Lihat lebih banyakAli dragged her feet on the floor as she tiredly made her way into the mansion, her dull eyes drooping slightly as sleepyness settled in.
Today was the worst day of her life, the presentation her team had painstakingly put together was sabotaged and her direct supervisor had lashed out at her for it. And now she has to create a new presentation on her own.
She felt her eyes sting, there were visible dark circles under her eyes, and her makeup had smudged, giving her the appearance of a ghost from a horror film.
When she walked into the house, she discovered her stepmother and father sitting on the sofa, watching a romantic drama. On the table is a bowl of popcorn and a bottle of juice.
Ali averted her gaze, her mood darkening even further. She moved slowly and walked past them, hoping she was invisible enough that no one would notice her, but the woman did.
“Ali is here!" Mary exclaimed, her voice full of excitement. Ali caught her father's brief glance at her before returning his attention to the television.
Mary stood up and approached her, and when she saw her face, she exclaimed, "Ali, what happened to you? Your eyes are swollen with dark circles, and you look terrible," she said, putting her hands over her mouth.
Ali lacked the strength to deal with the cunning woman; she was exhausted from work and did not want Mary to show false concern for her. A person can be misled into thinking she is the sweetest stepmother in the world, when in reality she is a venomous serpent.
Ali turned to leave, but Mary stopped her and tried to grab her jaw, "I told you to quit working and marry Jared, but you will not listen; look what you are doing to your beautiful face. Do you want to end up as ugly as your mother?"
Ali's glare became sharper as she gave Mary a threatening look. She repeatedly warned the woman not to talk about her mother in a disrespectful manner.
When Mary saw her glare, she scoffed and returned to her seat. She picked a strawberry from the table and fed it to her husband, smiling coquettishly at him.
Ali shook her head; it appeared the woman had made it her daily mission to provoke her. She walked away from there, towards her brother's room.
Since her mother's death three years ago, her father has changed dramatically. He unexpectedly returned home one day with Mary and a girl and introduced them as family.
Ali was furious; her mother had just been laid to rest, and her father had taken a second wife. It was almost as if he was waiting for his wife's death before marrying again.
Her mother died as a result of a fire at a party. A portion of her face was burned, which contributed to her ugly appearance. She had no idea what caused the fire because the case had been closed and her spineless father had failed to investigate.
A few months after her death, her brother developed a brain tumor; her father refused to help raise funds for his treatment and instead spent his money on his new wife and daughter.
He went bankrupt last year, and the family has been living off her mother's remaining insurance money, while she has had to use her salary to pay for her brother's medications.
The only reason she has not moved out is that she has a lot of factors to consider, including the high cost of her brother's treatment, as well as the need to pay for rent and a caregiver, food, and bills.
However, she motivates herself to wait a few months until her loan is approved and the properties her mother has listed for sale are sold. She will pay for her brother's surgery and then move out.
She walked into the room, only to find it empty. The bed was scattered, and the life support machine was turned off.
Her heart dropped, and as fear set in, she bolted from the room and returned to the sitting room where her father was.
"Dad,...where..is...Joe?" The urgency in her voice, combined with the way she ran, rendered her speech incoherent.
Lucas, who had been disturbed, frowned at her and shouted, "What is it?"
"I asked, where is..."
"Oh! I forgot to tell you that your aunt took him to the hospital earlier today. I believe he had a seizure; he was trembling like a person who had been electrocuted," Mary said. Her response came out nonchalantly as if the boy having a seizure was a joke.
"Why did not you tell me?" Ali demanded, her body stiffening and her heart clenching. "Do you even know that Ali needs urgent surgery, Dad? Why are you wicked towards your blood?" Ali's voice came out in a whisper as the news drained her last ounce of strength. Her knees buckled and she knelt on the floor, her brown eyes filled with pain and betrayal for her father.
Lucas was offended by her question and roared at her, "You are the one being wicked here, Alice; if only you had married Jared, your brother would have been fine by now, and I would have had my company back."
"You have yourself to blame for your company's predicament; if you had not married this b**ch, none of this would have happened." Ali's voice became louder as if she had regained her lost strength at the mention of her marriage.
SLAP
Ali's face turned to the side when Mary slapped her. Tears welled up in her eyes as she fought the urge to jump on the woman and give her the beating of her life.
She glared at the woman, hatred in her eyes, her fist clenched at her side. The area Mary slapped turned red, leaving a few lines on her fingers.
Ali's heart shook, and she immediately stood straight like a rod and shifted away from Charles. "Are you alright?" Charles asked, staring at her with a look of worry. "Uh–yes I am," Ali breathed, looking down at the floor as she didn't want to look at Gerald. Why did he have to walk here at that very moment when Charles caught her? Gerald's eyes shifted to Charles, and the marketing director quickly said. "She slipped, and I caught her." "You should be careful with people you catch. You might end up falling harder than the person," Gerald said. It was a subtle threat, but Charles failed to understand it as he was unaware of the relationship between the new CEO and his newly appointed marketing assistant. Ali knew he was talking about her, even though he didn't spare her a glance. Her heart raced with him just standing there and talking. His aura seemed to have magnified, and she felt like she was a pauper standing before an emperor. A cruel, hot emperor. Charles chuckled afte
The hospital where Dr Wood worked was the biggest hospital in the country, and the hotel where Lilian had the fire accident belonged to an influential tycoon in the country. Whatever transpired in both of these big establishments was definitely not a coincidence. "I will drop by later before going back. I was going to propose to Ali yesterday," Dr Wood said. Mr Wood blinked in surprise at the information. "Oh, do you still–" "I don't care about that father," Dr Wood interrupted his father, knowing what the man wanted to say. He squashed the coffee cup with his palms and stood up, saying, "It's my fault for not paying and asking her to get the remaining. I acted too indifferent." "You didn't. Your brother needed you at that time, our family needed you," Mr Wood stated. His youngest son had somehow gotten involved with a con artist and was swindled a huge amount of money and, if not for his assistance, they would have ended up in the streets. Dr Wood shook his head with a bitte
It appeared that she slept so deeply last night that she failed to hear when he came in, but how did she end up outside? She had never sleepwalked before and would definitely not start that now, so the only explanation was that Gerald had moved her out last night. Everyone had the same conclusion, even though Gerald kept a poker face and acted like an oblivious child. "Did someone die that you women decided to stand at the door with gloomy faces?" Gerald asked, looking at his grandmother. He didn't spare Ali a glance, and it only made Ali feel worse because he was blatantly ignoring her after what he did. "I thought that someone indeed died; otherwise, why would your wife be sleeping on the floor, right outside your room?" Harriet replied unhappily. Gerald's lips quirked up, and he passed a glance at Ali before looking away. "How would I know? She must have crawled out here without realizing it. Her limbs are surprisingly all over the place." He perked Harriet and walked away.
He sighed, feeling a headache form. His grandmother had a way of throwing people into illusions, causing frustrating confusion. "How annoying," he tsked. "Hm, did you say something?" Barry asked, looking back at Gerald. Gerald glanced at him then closed his eyes but as soon as the darkness covered his vision, he saw a certain woman. She looked radiant and breathtakingly enchanting in the white wedding dress. Her naive, black, starry-like eyes and her innocent smile. The way she looked at him when he told her that she had signed a contract with the devil and how she stood her ground to not move during the wedding reception made him ponder if perhaps Ali had a split personality. She wasn't as weak as she appeared to be and seemed to have a mindset that worked differently from others. He couldn't tell if she was a white lotus or a stray cat. Thinking about it now, he realized that her emotions and actions sometimes clashed. Just like when Jared abducted her and he went to save
Gerald stared at Madeline with a cold, calculating smile. The room fell into an eerie silence, as Madeline suddenly turned quiet from shock after seeing the child. Her fear was etched across her face. She could not believe that Gerald had caught a hold of her family. She had painstakingly hidden them away, so how did he find them? She was sure they were safe, and no one would link them to her.Alan, the man who had been roughly dragged into the other room, looked startled and disoriented. His eyes darted around the room, glaring angrily at the men who pinned him to the chair and tied him up. He had been captured when he was returning from his meeting with a client in Mongolia. Madeline's son continued sobbing in the other room, and it brought tears to Madeleine's eyes that slipped down to her shirt. "Gerald, they did nothing wrong to you, I hurt you, please let them go. My son is just six years old," she struggled with the chair helplessly. Gerald pouted his lips and let the silen
Music recommendation: In The End by Linkin Park."Leave it be for now, let me deal with this one first. Have the child and lover moved to the other room. It's been so long I last saw her," Gerald said, and resumed walking. His expression turned frostier even as he walked languidly through the corridor and halted before a steel door. The door was pushed back by William, and as he walked in, his eyes observed the condition of the room sharply, even under the scarce lighting. He was quick to pick out a flying insect in a corner of the room. It was a cockroach."I didn't remember giving you permission to have companions," Gerald said, looking in a particular direction. The light was turned on abruptly, and it shone directly on the face of the girl who sat directly opposite it and in the middle of the room. Her eyes were forced to close because of the light that fell directly on her face. "You didn't come to visit, I was lonely, and they came to keep me company," the girl said. Her voi
