Nora's wrists burned.

She tugged again at the restraints, metal biting into already tender skin, her breathing sharp and quick as her wide eyes darted across the dim room. It smelled of iron, mold, and something else... something sour, rotten, like old fear. The cold concrete walls pressed in like silent watchers, and overhead, a single lightbulb flickered and swayed, casting shadows that danced like cruel ghosts.

She'd screamed herself hoarse an hour ago. Maybe more. Time felt broken here. Every second stretched like chewing gum, sticky and slow and unbearable.

"Somebody help! Help me, please. They're holding me captive here!" she shouted, the words scraping raw from her throat.

She twisted her torso, trying to shimmy her way out of the restraints, but the thick ropes held fast, digging deeper into her skin. She screamed again, louder, her voice cracking at the peak.

"Help! Help!"

But there was only silence.

Her shoulders slumped down in defeat.

"No one's coming," she whispered to he

"Dirt to dirt. Ashes we shall return…"The preacher's voice rolled out over the cemetery, deep and steady, but it seemed to fade somewhere before reaching Alice. She stood beside her father, hands clasped loosely in front of her, eyes fixed on the wooden casket resting above the open grave."…for we are but dust, and to dust we shall return," he continued, the words threading into the damp air.Her father leaned slightly toward her. "Cold?""A little," she murmured. He adjusted the coat draped over her shoulders, though she hadn't noticed him put it there. The preacher closed his Bible. "Let us pray."Heads bowed. Alice's stayed lowered, but her eyes remained open, watching the toes of her shoes sink a little into the soft ground. When the prayer ended, movement began again the slow, solemn shuffle of mourners stepping forward to offer condolences. The first was Mrs. Dalrymple, a small woman in an oversized black hat. She took Alice's hand in both of hers. "My dear, I am so sorry. I

The engine growled under Travis's grip, his knuckles white on the wheel. The city thinned out around him, streetlights giving way to the long shadows of the warehouse district.Every turn brought him closer, but not fast enough. His mind wouldn't stop spinning images of Alice walking straight into a trap, of hands on her, of her stubborn mouth getting her killed before he could reach her.You should've been there. You should've stopped her.The thought was poison, but it wouldn't let go. He slammed his palm against the steering wheel, the horn blaring into the empty street. Then pop.The sound was faint but distinct, even over the rumble of the car. A gunshot.Travis's stomach dropped. Another shot followed, sharper this time. His heart kicked hard in his chest.No. No, no.He floored it, tires screeching as the warehouse loomed ahead. The building was a hulking silhouette against the dim sky, one rusted side door cracked open like an invitation or a warning. He killed the engine but

Alice paced beside her car, keys clutched so tightly they dug into her palm. "I'm going," she said, eyes fixed on the road ahead.Elliott stepped in front of her. "You are absolutely not going alone.""They said no police. No backup. Just me," she shot back."That's exactly why you can't just march in there. It's a trap.""I don't care if it's a trap," Alice snapped. "They have my mum and Nora. I'm not sitting here while they do unimaginable things to them , you don't fully grasp what these people are capable of." Her voice broke. She swallowed hard. "I'm going."Elliott folded his arms. "Do you even know where you're going?""Yes. The address Nora gave me before the line went dead.""And you think you're just going to walk in and then what reason with them?""If it keeps them alive, yes."Elliott shook his head. "Alice, listen to yourself. You're walking straight into the lion's den.""I've been in worse.""Not like this. These people aren't playing games."Alice's eyes burned. "Neit

The phone went dead."Alice?!" Alice's voice cracked through the empty line. "Mum hello?!" She yanked the phone from her ear, stabbing at the screen to redial. It rang once, twice… voicemail. Again. And again. Always voicemail. Her stomach dropped into ice. "No, no, no."She grabbed her bag, keys already in her hand. "Mum," she muttered, pulling up her mother's name and hitting call. It rang. No answer. Again. No answer. The air felt heavier. Her brain tried to convince her this was just bad reception. But her chest knew better—there was a thread tying these moments together, tightening around her neck."Pick up, pick up, please—" she whispered.Still nothing.Alice froze, phone still against her ear. Two people she loved. Two people missing. And one horrible, crawling thought slithered up her spine. This wasn't a coincidence.~~~~~~~~~~~~Her breath came in ragged bursts, muffled by the hand clamped over her mouth. She kicked, twisted, nails digging into her attacker's wrist. They di

"Victoria Willis?"She blinked. The voice wasn't one of the regular guards. This one sounded newer. Unfamiliar. And too polite."Yeah?" she answered cautiously, not bothering to stand. Her back ached from the cot and her wrists were still sore from yesterday's cuffs."Get up. You're leaving."Victoria narrowed her eyes. "Leaving where?"The young officer didn't look at her. He had a paper in his hand, stamped and folded. "You've been processed. You're to be released immediately."Her brows pinched together. "That's impossible. Did Dan send you? Is he here? What's going on? ""I don't know what you're talking about about. I've just been ordered to let you know you've been released."He reached for her cuffs and she instinctively pulled her hands back."Wait who actually requested this?""I was just told to come get you," he muttered, irritation creeping into his voice. "Ma'am, please. Don't make this difficult."She allowed him to unclip the cuffs, still trying to study his face. He did
