Victoria’s apartment smelled of coffee and fresh ink.

It was small, cluttered with stacks of newspapers and recording equipment, and utterly devoid of marble floors or crystal chandeliers. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen.

“You look like a ghost,” Victoria said, locking the deadbolt behind me and drawing the curtains shut.

“I feel like one.” I dropped my bag onto her worn leather couch and sank into the cushions. The adrenaline had worn off an hour ago, leaving behind a bone-deep

The first day of Adrian's trial dawned cold and gray, the sky heavy with clouds that threatened rain.I stood in front of the mirror in our hotel suite in Manhattan, adjusting the collar of my navy suit. My hands were steady, but my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Six months had passed since I had walked out of Adrian's penthouse. Six months since I had reclaimed my life. But standing here now, preparing to face him in a courtroom, it felt like only yesterday.Julian appeared behind me in the mirror, his hands settling gently on my shoulders. "You don't have to do this.""Yes, I do." I met his eyes in the reflection. "I'm not just a witness. I'm a survivor. If I don't speak, he wins."Julian pressed a kiss to my temple. "Then let's go make sure he loses."---The courthouse was surrounded by media, a sea of cameras and microphones and shouting reporters. Julian's security team formed a tight circle around us as we walked up the steps, shielding us from the chaos. M

  • Married to the wrong twin, loved by the other   Chapter 33 - The Proxy

Victoria’s investigation took four days.On the fifth day, she drove up to the Hudson Valley estate with a thick folder and dark circles under her eyes. She refused coffee, refused food, and simply spread the documents across the kitchen table.“I found the proxy,” she said. “It took me a while because the account was buried under a labyrinth of shell companies. But the money trail leads to one person.”She slid a photograph across the table. It was a woman in her mid-fifties, impeccably dressed, with sharp cheekbones and cold, calculating eyes.Julian picked up the photograph, his brow furrowing. “That’s Diane Sterling. She was my father’s executive assistant before Natalia. She retired twenty years ago.”“She didn’t retire,” Victoria corrected. “She was paid a massive settlement to disappear. She knows everything about the Blackwood family’s dirty secrets, including Project Nightfall. And she’s been managing Adrian’s offshore accounts for the last decade.”My stomach dropped. “So sh

  • Married to the wrong twin, loved by the other   Chapter 32 - The Calm Before The Storm

The weeks that followed the press conference were a whirlwind of chaos and quiet triumph.Julian was formally instated as the head of the Blackwood estate. He didn't keep a single penny of Adrian's tainted fortune, instead liquidating the remaining assets and funneling the money into a trust for victims of corporate fraud and domestic abuse. The press called him the "Redemption Heir," and for the first time in his life, Julian was celebrated instead of pitied.Adrian's trial date was set for the fall. The DA was confident. With Marguerite's affidavit, the murder charge, and the mountain of evidence from Project Nightfall, Adrian would never see the outside of a prison cell again. And for the first time in years, we were allowed to breathe.---We moved out of the city.Julian bought a sprawling estate in the Hudson Valley—a far cry from the cold, imposing Blackwood Keep. It was a warm, sunlit house with wrap-around porches, a garden full of wildflowers, and a barn that I was already p

  • Married to the wrong twin, loved by the other   Chapter 31 - The Heir Apparent

The flight back to New York was tense and silent.Julian spent most of it staring at the birth certificate, his thumb tracing the ink of his own name. He didn't speak, and I didn't push. Some realizations needed to settle in the bones before they could be spoken aloud.I watched the clouds drift past the jet window and tried to wrap my mind around the magnitude of what we had just learned. Adrian had built his entire empire on a lie. He had spent his life tormenting Julian, trying to destroy him, all because he knew that Julian was the true firstborn. Richard Blackwood's will stated that the eldest son inherited the controlling shares. If the truth came out, Adrian's entire claim to power would be void."He knew," Julian finally said, his voice hollow. He didn't look at me, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon. "All those years. The drowning. The sabotage. The way he looked at me like I was a disease. It wasn't just because I was the 'spare.' It was because I was the real threat."I

I left them alone. It wasn't my place to stand between a mother and the son she had lost twenty-eight years ago. I stepped out into the cobblestone street, the Provençal sun warm on my face, and waited. Through the shop window, I could see them—Marguerite tentatively reaching for Julian's hand, Julian standing rigid before finally, slowly, accepting the touch. An hour passed. Then two. I bought a coffee from a nearby café and sat on a stone bench, watching the town wake up around me. It was peaceful here—far from the penthouses and courtrooms and the shadow of the Blackwood name. When Julian finally emerged, his eyes were red-rimmed, but there was something lighter in his face. Something that hadn't been there before."She wants to meet you," he said, his voice rough. "Properly."I nodded and followed him back inside.---Marguerite had set out tea in a small back room behind the shop, surrounded by half-finished floral arrangements. She had composed herself, though her hands still tr

  • Married to the wrong twin, loved by the other   Chapter 29 - The Ghost Of A Mother

Julian didn't come home that night.I waited in the penthouse, the photograph of the blonde woman clutched in my hand, watching the minutes bleed into hours. His phone went straight to voicemail. Marcus didn't answer either. By midnight, my anxiety had curdled into something colder—a quiet, creeping dread. When the front door finally opened at two in the morning, Julian walked in looking like a man who had been to war. His tie was gone. His shirt was untucked. His gray eyes were flat and distant in a way I hadn't seen since the early days, before he had ever shown me his tenderness."Julian." I stood up. "Where were you?""Marcus and I went to the estate." His voice was hoarse. "I needed to see my father's private records. The ones the lawyers didn't get to.""And?"He walked past me, pouring himself a glass of whiskey with hands that weren't quite steady. "My mother didn't die in childbirth."The room tilted. "What?""There was no childbirth." Julian took a long drink, his jaw tight.
