"Alan, is the baby Sandra's carrying… yours?"

Isolde Vancrest froze. The color drained from her face. She couldn't believe what she had just heard.

Seven months ago, Alan Princeton's older brother had died in a car crash. Out of sympathy for his widowed, pregnant wife, Sandra Carter, Isolde had done everything to help her. She would prepare nourishing meals for her every day, accompany her to every prenatal appointment, and treat her like family.

And now this? This was how they repaid her?

Never had she imagined that Alan—the man who once held her as if she were his entire world—would betray her like this.

"Explain yourself!" she demanded, her voice trembling. She fixed her gaze on the man sitting silently on the sofa.

The light caught the lines between his brows, deepening the shadows across his sharp face. His usual composure was gone, replaced by a suffocating heaviness.

Alan exhaled slowly and said in a low voice, "Calm down, Isolde. My family… needs an heir."

The words cut through her heart like glass. Three years ago, Isolde had hurt her womb while saving his life. The doctor had said she might never conceive again.

Alan had held her hand then and sworn, "I only want you. Who cares about babies? I'll never need one."

And now this?

"An heir?" Isolde gave a hollow laugh, tears breaking free. "So you slept with your sister-in-law? How disgusting can you get?"

A sharp crack echoed through the room.

Alan's mother, Ruth Whitmore, stood before her, her face contorted with disdain as she fixed Isolde with a glare. "Watch your mouth! How dare you speak to Alan like that? His brother is gone. It's only natural that the younger one continues the family line. You have no right to question it."

Ruth's shrill voice rose. "Besides, you can't even bear children. What right do you have to act proud? You should be grateful that Alan hasn't thrown you out already!"

'Can't even bear children…' Isolde touched her burning cheek and stared at Alan in disbelief. 'So this is what he thinks. I should be grateful? Grateful he hasn't thrown me out?!'

Alan was the one to propose—nine times. He was the one who swore he could live without a child, who showed her the vasectomy papers while pleading, tears in his eyes, for one last chance. Those papers still lay locked in her safe.

Alan's eyes flickered with guilt and frustration as he looked at the red mark on her face.

After a long pause, he spoke again, his voice quiet but unyielding. "My brother's gone. I have to take responsibility for the family. You can't have children. That's reality, Isolde. We both need to face it."

He hesitated, then added, "You love kids, don't you? When Sandra's baby is born, we'll adopt it. You can raise it as your own. We'll finally have the family we wanted."

Isolde let out a bitter laugh. "So I should thank you, Mr. Princeton, for letting me become a mother without the inconvenience of childbirth?"

Alan frowned. "Isolde, I'm trying to reason with you. Must you take that tone?"

"You ungrateful girl!" Ruth snapped. "You should be thankful you're getting a son at all! How dare you talk back?"

She shoved Isolde toward the door. "Get out! Go think about what kind of daughter-in-law you should be. Don't come back until you've learned some respect!"

It was past ten. Snow fell heavily outside, and the wind was biting at her skin. They were really throwing her out—barefoot, dressed only in a thin sweater.

Isolde turned to Alan instinctively, searching for a word of defense, a sign of mercy. But he only stood there with clenched fists and a frown.

After a moment, he looked away. He didn't stop his mother. He just let it happen.

The heavy oak door slammed shut with a deafening thud. The click of the lock sliced through the silence.

Cold seeped into Isolde's bones as she stood frozen on the steps, her gaze fixed on the closed door. Her mind was a blank void.

'Three years of engagement…' The words echoed bitterly in her thoughts.

Alan had once loved her with a devotion so fierce it had seemed unshakable. He used to tuck the blanket around her each time she kicked it off at night. He'd bought entire designer collections because she had paused for a moment over a single dress in a magazine. He hated traveling, yet he had taken her across the world when she'd grown restless.

Isolde had once believed she had found the right man. Now she finally understood that love could never withstand the weight of family duty or reality.

When that duty came into conflict with their relationship, he hadn't even tried to talk it through. He had simply made the decision for both of them.

Alan knew she had no one in Southbridge, nowhere to turn. He knew she loved him too deeply to walk away. He expected her to bear everything, even his betrayal, and still remain by his side. He believed she was trapped.

Unfortunately, he had forgotten one crucial fact. When Ruth had threatened suicide to stop their marriage, they had settled for a modest engagement party. They had never been legally married.

A cold, fragile smile curved her lips. Beneath the heartbreak, something in her finally steeled. "Alan Princeton, I don't want you anymore."

With trembling fingers, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number she hadn't called in years.

When the line connected, her voice was steady. "Do your words from back then still count, Bruce?"

The housekeeper, Helen Danfrey, said anxiously, "Madam, she's gone. Ms. Vancrest has left."

"She's gone?" Ruth snapped. "She dares walk out instead of begging for forgiveness? That woman's lost her mind."

"The news hit her hard," Helen said softly. "Maybe you should go after her, Mr. Princeton. You might still catch her if you leave now."

Alan stared out the window, irritation flickering across his face. "No need."

He knew Isolde too well. Even when she was angry, she never truly left. This was just her temper. She would come back.

"Exactly. As if she could leave him. She'll crawl back tomorrow, begging for forgiveness," Ruth said with a smirk.

"And when she does, she won't get away with a simple apology. She needs to learn obedience if she wants to stay in this family," she added, her voice brimming with contempt.

She then turned to Alan. "Don't go easy on her this time, Alan. You've spoiled her too much. When she comes back, make her work as a nanny. Sandra's delicate and can't handle caring for a child. Let that barren woman make herself useful. If she can't have her own, she can raise ours. Waste not, want not."

Helen drew in a sharp breath. She couldn't tell if Isolde would truly allow herself to be humiliated like that again. After all, she had borne everything else without complaint.

The next morning, snow still blanketed Southbridge.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up in front of the Princeton estate, its tires crunching through ice.

The door opened, and Isolde stepped out with a brand-new marriage certificate in her hand.

The Ferris wheel was enclosed, private, and cramped. As it rose, it felt cut off from the world, creating a sense of intimacy and emotional ambiguity, a romantic sanctuary cherished by countless couples.Bruce followed the direction of her finger and looked over. The steel structure, wrapped in colored lights, reflected a cold sheen under the sunlight.Irritation nearly spilled from his eyes, yet he remained rational. His thin lips pressed into a hard, cold line.He said nothing as he stepped forward with long strides and walked toward the Ferris wheel entrance without expression.Claudia watched his back as he moved forward despite his reluctance. A flicker of complicated emotions crossed her eyes, but a stronger desire to conquer quickly overtook it.She quickened her pace and caught up, walking beside him like the most perfectly matched couple. The crowd in line parted automatically to make way for them. Curious, envious, and admiring gazes followed closely behind. However, j

"That is… Her Highness Claudia?!""Oh my God! It really is Her Highness! Greetings, Your Highness!""Your Highness!"Exclamations rose one after another. Those who recognized her stopped in their tracks and bowed in her direction. Their demeanor was deeply respectful, their eyes filled with disbelief and delight. This was their future queen. Someone they had only admired from afar in news reports and official appearances now stood before them, casually present in an amusement park.Claudia had expected this. She removed her sunglasses with practiced elegance, revealing flawless makeup and a perfectly composed smile. She gave the surrounding crowd a light wave, her voice soft and measured. "There is no need for formalities. Today, I am not here as the Crown Princess, but as an ordinary woman, at the amusement park with the man I love, enjoying a simple date. I hope you will not treat me differently. Let us all enjoy ourselves together."She stated her purpose openly. As she spoke

She glanced first at Nestor, who focused on the instruments, then at Isolde's pale face. The assistant looked conflicted and hesitant, as if she wanted to speak but held back.Nestor frowned. "What is it? Don't you see she's in the middle of treatment?"The assistant bit her lip and steeled herself. "Dr. Mills, I'm sorry, but… there's a message. Her Highness instructed that it must be delivered to Ms. Vancrest immediately."Isolde's heart skipped a beat. She gritted her teeth, forcing herself to endure the pain in her fingers, and turned her head weakly. "What… is it?"The assistant's gaze flickered with unease as she noticed the fine beads of sweat at Isolde's temple and the faint pallor of her lips. But she could not defy Her Highness' order. She lowered her head and avoided Isolde's gaze. "Her Highness instructed me to tell you that her meeting was temporarily canceled, and now… she is with the Prince, heading to the amusement park downtown."Isolde's pupils constricted shar

When the clock hand passed the final mark and reached the half hour, Isolde stopped almost at once. She casually tossed the already dirty cloth onto the table. Her tone turned light and cheerful, like a little bird finally off work. "Time's up. Let's go."She turned to Bruce, her voice soft and sweet as she pouted. "Hubby, I'm hungry. I want the risotto you make."Amusement deepened in Bruce's eyes until it seemed to melt."Okay," he said indulgently. "I'll make it for you."He stood, walked over to her, and bent down. With one smooth motion, he slipped an arm beneath her and lifted her horizontally with ease. The movement was natural and fluid, as if it had long been second nature.Isolde wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her cheek to his solid chest. She did not forget to glance back at Claudia, who sat frozen, her face pale.Isolde gave her an innocent, faintly smug smile. "Your Highness, the table is clean. Enjoy your meal.""You!" Claudia's chest heaved as ange

Footsteps gradually faded, and the kitchen fell silent.Isolde stood alone, the flush on her face slowly receding. She raised her hand and brushed her fingertips over her still slightly numb lips. Then she smiled faintly.'Ha! Ten minutes? He's my man. I won't allow that, not even for ten minutes!'…Claudia had already resumed her seat at the head of the long table. She wore a perfect smile, her posture composed and elegant, as if the earlier commotion and irritation had never occurred. She relished the thrill of snatching Bruce away from Isolde. Even if it was only ten minutes, this man had to remain with her, to belong to her in this moment. The thought of Isolde hiding in the kitchen, frustrated and flustered, only improved her mood. This morning tea had become all the more delightful."Bruce, the coffee just now—"Claudia had barely begun when a crisp, familiar female voice cut in, "The table is dirty. I will clean it for you, Your Highness."Claudia turned sharply and sa

Since yesterday, Isolde had lain in bed, carefully sorting through every detail and time difference from the past few days.Recalling the time she had once seen Bruce return home early in the morning, she had concluded that Claudia would likely come looking for him during that same window. Thus, she had set an alarm and woken early on purpose. At the sight of her small, accusing, demanding stance, a deeper smile flickered in Bruce's eyes."I was just humoring her for a bit. Only half an hour. I didn't want to disturb your sleep," he explained patiently, his tone indulgent.Isolde did not accept that. She deliberately put on a stern expression, her tone firm and commanding. "Humoring her at all is not allowed. You're my husband. Not a single second should be spent alone with another woman."Her words were unreasonable, yet they made Bruce's chest burn. He let out a low chuckle, his chest vibrating as he failed to suppress his delight. The jealous look on her face pushed his mood t

Isolde stepped out of the church and drew a deep breath. This was the taste of freedom. Her body, however, refused to relax. She released Bruce's hand at once and shifted a step to the side, leaving a careful, polite distance between them.Bruce's fingers curled slightly. His gaze darkened. The

Bruce's counterquestion sent a sudden flutter of unease through Isolde. Those words were far too easy to misinterpret. She lowered her head and focused on her food, offering a vague reply to sidestep the issue. "That's your choice. I have no right to interfere."Bruce noticed her ostrich-like retr

Bruce's eyes swept over the ten male models like a blade, then settled heavily on her. "Didn't Mrs. Princeton say she would invite me for coffee? I have time now."Isolde froze, momentarily at a loss for words."It's midnight. What coffee are you talking about?" she asked.Bruce stood in the door

"Isolde, are you still trying to hide it from us?" Moira gave her a light smack, more teasing than scolding. "Do you think we don't go online or read the news? We already know you married Bruce."Isolde forced a small smile. "I was planning to tell you when the timing felt right…""Well, now is a
