Lucien furrowed his brows in confusion,” What?”

“The….kitchen…is…that…way…make…use…of…it…” Ethan practically spelled out every word. Lucien was quiet for a minute; Ethan had never talked to him in that tone before- that’s not Ethan.

Normally, Ethan would apologize, quickly rush to the kitchen to make him breakfast and do anything it takes to satisfy him, but… this time, Ethan looked rather unbothered than sorry. Maybe he’s just angry; he’s obviously angry about something; he’ll come around. Lucien convinced himself, shrugged, grabbed his suitcase and keys, then walked out.

Immediately he left, Ethan scoffed, How pathetic I had been in my past life, following his orders like a dog.” He rolled his eyes with irritation as he kept replaying the way Lucien had requested his food. How stupid he had been in his past life to think Lucien loved him, when he practically used the same voice he’d use for a junior staff member in his office to talk to him. Lucien never faked anything; he made it clear Ethan wasn’t wanted, but his reputation blinded him, and he always found an excuse to cover up every ill treatment of Lucien towards him. Thinking back, Ethan laughed, desperate fool, referring to himself.

Ethan grabbed his spoon and continued his meal peacefully; for the first time in years, he felt like himself. He wasn’t begging for approval; he wasn’t apologizing for things that weren’t his fault; he wasn’t shrinking his desires and happiness for someone else’s. In that silent dining room, Ethan decided he was done. He was done being pathetic; he was done being cheap; he was done prioritizing someone who doesn’t deserve it; he was done living for someone else. From now on, he’d do things that he wants and only because he wants them and feels like doing them, regardless of what any other person thinks.

—CK EMPIRE, JEWELRY STORE—

Carlos sat behind his well-polished table, looking smart and well reserved, but in his head, it was the total opposite. He couldn’t stop reminiscing on how a stranger saved him from losses and explanations, and how that same stranger had called him an idiot. His thoughts were cut short when a knock came on the door.

“Boss?” His PA’s voice came more like a question.

“Come in.” Carlos cold, deep, rich voice came. The doorknob twisted, the door was opened, and his PA walked in, a file in hand.

“Boss, it’s Ethan Vale’s file, the one you asked me to look up.

Carlos raised a brow, “Who the hell is Ethan Vale?”

His PA looked confused for a minute; did he do a check on the wrong person? Or does his boss just not know the person’s name? Carlos tapped his fingers on the table, jolting his PA back to reality.

“Uhmm… the strange guy from yesterday, the one you asked me to investigate.” His PA cleared his throat and explained. Carlos nodded in realization; he stretched his hand and collected the file; immediately, he opened it. “Cool, you can leave.” He said without looking up. After some seconds, he heard the door close. He looked into the file,

Name: Ethan Vale

Age: 25 years old

Education: College graduate of Business Administration

Family/ Background: Comes from the Vale family who own “V Jewels”

Relationship status: In a relationship.

“Wait…what? Is he in a relationship? Wow!” Carlos laughed. He looked through the file; nothing special, nothing interesting. He closed the file and tossed it on the table; he loosened his tie a little.

“Crazy.” He chuckled to himself.

—EVENING, LUCIEN APARTMENT—

Ethan had the house in full blasts of music; he was doing his little concert as he moved around the house. He was actually cooking; he held the spatula handle to his lips, pretending it was a microphone as he sang loudly, doing funny dances. He couldn’t remember the last time he actually smiled and felt happy; he was always thinking about how to please Lucien and forgot he was human too. He finished cooking, turned off the music to switch to a movie, served his meal, sat comfortably on the couch, watching a film.

Mid-meal, his phone started ringing; he stared at the screen with a mouth full. Lucien was calling. He stared for a second and looked back at the TV,” I’m eating and busy to pick up.” He said to himself. The phone rang two more times, and he didn’t pick up any. After eating, he did the dishes and sat back on the couch, he grabbed his phone and scrolled through his contacts, his eyes landed on a contact, he stared at it, his heart became heavy, guilt rose in his chest, after so much back and forth debates in his head, he finally dialed the number, the phone rang once, twice and then the person picked up, but stayed silent, for a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Ethan took in a sharp, heavy breath; his heart was pounding, his eyes welled up, he bit his lip, and finally he summoned up the courage,

“Mum?” He called softly.

—THE NEXT DAY— Ethan was on the couch; he was on a call with his mum, and his face was flushed from smiling too much. He was on a call with his family, and they were telling him about something that had happened, and he couldn’t stop laughing and also feeling guilty for sacrificing the love and happiness from this family for something that was never worth it.“We miss you, Ethan.” His mother said softly on the other end.“I miss you too,” Ethan whispered.“Don’t forget to come for a visit someday, when you feel like it.” His mother said, sadness evident in her voice.“I’ll be coming over today,” Ethan announced. The other end was silent for a second, just a second before everyone started screaming and jubilation filled the air; Ethan smiled. They talked a bit more, and the call ended. He stared at the blank screen and hugged the phone to his chest; Lucien’s voice interrupted everything.“Who got you all smiles?” Lucien crossed his arms over his chest.“And why do

—THE NEXT DAY— It was already 8:00am when Ethan woke up. He yawned and went into the bathroom to do his morning business. He got out, threw on casual wear and went downstairs. As he took his last step down, he noticed Lucien was still around. He rolled his eyes and was heading to the kitchen when Lucien called,“Not even a good morning?” He said calmly.Ethan was quiet for some seconds before speaking, “Good morning.” He continued his steps, but Lucien stopped him again,“Make me a cup of coffee.” He ordered without looking up.“Ever seen me serving in a coffee shop?” Ethan asked.“What?” Lucien raised a brow.“You’ve got arms and legs for a reason, but if you don’t know any reason, I’ll give you one. Your legs are meant to walk towards the kitchen, and your arms are meant to prepare whatever you want. Do you get it now?” Ethan rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen. After a few minutes, he walked out with a coffee mug in hand. Lucien looked up and smiled,“I

The line on the other end was quiet for about thirty seconds, but it felt like years to Ethan; he stayed, whatever came, he’d accept. And then, her voice came, shaky, unsure, almost scared, “Ethan?”“Mum… how…are you?” Ethan felt guilty and awkward; that was his fault; he had caused this. It wasn’t right to feel awkward talking to one’s parent, but here he was.“I…I’m okay now.” She seemed to smile a little. “How have you been?” She asked.Ethan was quiet, unsure of what to say. Had he been fine? Definitely not, but he can’t say that to her; that would be selfish of him to make her worry over him after everything he had done. “I’m fine.” He lied. His mother was quiet; she could sense the wrong in his voice. “Who are you with on the phone?” Mr Vale’s voice came through. Ethan almost hung up; he wasn’t braced for talking to his dad yet, but he stopped himself, reminding himself that he would take everything they do, because he caused it.“It’s Ethan,” his mother’s voice came through

MISTAKING YOU FOR DESTINYChapter 5 Ethan walked out of company and released a breath he didn’t realize he has been holding. He looked around, having accomplished his goal he can now look around and admire the environment. He stared for some minutes before heading to the roadside to board a cab.As the cab rode, he sighted an ice cream spot by roadside, he stopped the cab man, paid him and alighted. He crossed to the other side of the road where the ice cream spot was. He paid for a chocolate cone as his face brightened, in his past life he had stopped taking chocolate ice cream because Lucien didn’t like it, he had called it childish. After finishing the ice cream, he stayed for a while to enjoy the soft breeze, how much he had missed this. The cab pulled up in front of Lucien’s apartment, Ethan got down, paid the driver and walked in, he checked his time, it was already 7:00pm. He sighed, he didn’t even realize he took that long at Carlos office. He walked into his room and took

Carlos' gaze darkened. “Throw this thing out!” He ordered. The security guards approached Ethan, holding him by both arms. “Let me go!! Check the collection you are about to sign on!!” Ethan kept yelling and throwing his legs in the air.“Arrgghh Carlos!!!” He yelled again; the security guards were almost at the door,” No, no, no”, Ethan panicked. If they got to that door, he had lost his chance; he couldn’t fail in this lifetime too. He racked his brain, “What to do?”A thought ran into his head, and without thinking, he bit the hand of the security guard on the right. He yanked his arm from the second one and ran back towards Carlos.“What the fuck is wrong with you two? Don’t you need your jobs anymore? I told you to get this crazy guy out of my fucking office!” Carlos barked.“Just check the fawking collection, piece number twenty, yes, that’s the one, it’s a fake!” Ethan yelled breathlessly. The man with Carlos's eyes widened. “Who is this guy, and how did he know the exact par
