Chapter Twenty

Selene

I take the bottle of water from the tray and take a long, greedy, gulp. Lexi takes the bottle from me after and almost finishes the bottle before handing it back to me. ‘Quickly, he could be back any minute.’ I nod at her and down the rest of the water quickly which leaves me feeling a bit nauseous. A door slams suddenly in the house upstairs and my guts twist in fear. I have never been afraid of anything in my life, but now the sound of a door being closed has me nearly vomiting in fear. ‘He is back.’ Miriam throws herself down the stairs. I’m pretty sure she didn’t actually touch a single stair between the top and the bottom. She grabs the tray from between me and Lexi and snatches the water bottle from my hand. Her eyes are wide with fear and her hands shake as she turns and runs back up the stairs, the tinkle of the plates on the tray clinking off of one another rings through the air. She shuts and locks the door behind her, sending us back into darkness.
