After untangling myself from my blankets, I raced after Naomi as she stormed out of the room. Shit she was furious. I was a little worried for Natalie’s safety. I made it to Natalie’s room just in time to see Naomi spin around to face Natalie with a cold smile on her face.

“I heard you met Becky this morning,” Naomi told her, her smile never faltering.

“I did! She’s a sweet girl!” Natalie replied.

“You are to stay away from Becky! This is non-negotiable! I refuse to let you manipulate her!” Naomi snarled.

“I didn’t! I just–”

“Yes, you did, Natalie!” I cut in, not willing to let Natalie play any games. Not about this. “You made our relationship seem like it was something that it wasn’t? I won’t continue to tolerate this behavior from you! You tried to drive a wedge between me and Naomi, and now between me and Becky!”

“Rip, I didn’t–”

When Naomi leaped forward to slap Natalie, surprise and then pride filled me while I thought, ‘Holy shit! Naomi was a spitfire! My spitfire!’

She was quiet for a moment before bumping my shoulder with her own. “This isn’t just about Becky, is it?”I sighed as I shook my head. “No. It’s not. The same person who is threatening Becky made my childhood a living hell. Thank you, by the way. Thank you and your son for protecting her. She is too pure and innocent to ever have to go through what I did. If my mother had gotten hold of her…”My voice caught on a sob that made Sarah fully turn toward me to wrap her arms around me. “Becky will always be safe with me, Naomi. Just like I know that Jessica will always be safe with you. That’s how it should be.”I smiled as I hugged her back. “Children are innocent, Sarah. Some adults don’t care, but Rip and I do. We’ve seen what it does to a child to have that innocence ripped away from them. We refuse to let that happen to Becky.”She leaned back, sniffling a little as she gazed into my eyes. “When are you two going to adopt her? She really needs that reassurance.”I swallowed hard. “The

Rip turned his head to glare at the officers. “I don’t understand how Candice is even out on the streets! Not after what she’s accused of doing!”“Well, Judge Alexander let her out on bail. We can’t do–”“Did you say Judge Alexander? As in Niles Alexander?” I asked, raising my head to look at them. They glanced at each other before sighing. “Yes, Niles Alexander. Do you know him?”I swallowed hard as I looked back up at Rip before looking at the ground. “I do know him…”His arms immediately tightened around me as Kyle asked, “How do you know him?”“He was one of the men that my mother offered me to,” I whispered as I tried to keep the tears in my eyes.“Son of a bitch,” Rip practically growled. “That judge needs to be removed from the bench and arrested!”“Yes, he does, Mr. Gerrett, and I promise you that we will. We will speak to the prosecutor and–”“No! I will speak to the prosecutor! Candice and that judge, as well as everyone else who touched Nomes and Jenny, need to be off the s

I barreled out of the door, quickly taking in the scene in front of me as I rushed down the stairs toward Becky, who was currently being dragged to a car by a strange woman, while Rip tried to get a hold of her. I ran past Simon, who was shaking his hand as he stood over a strange man who was bigger than him, to get between Becky and the car. I jumped on the woman’s back, sending her flying forward to the ground while Rip grabbed Becky to keep her from hitting the ground. I put the woman in a chokehold, while Rip handed Becky to Sarah, who protectively had Jessica behind her, so he could grab the strange man.“Simon, call the police! Naomi, how are you doing, baby?”I tightened my hold on the struggling woman beneath me as I turned to look toward Becky. “I’m alright. Becky, are you okay, sweetheart?”“I’m okay, Mommy,” she whimpered, clutching at Sarah’s pants.“YOU’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!” Rip roared, drawing my attention to where the man was swinging at him, desperately trying to bre

I groaned as I opened my eyes before smiling at Rip when I found myself lying on his chest. I yawned as I tilted my head back to look up at him.“Good morning, my love. How are you feeling?” he asked without even looking at me.“Better. Thank you for taking care of me last night. I’m sorry that I ruined our night. I was looking forward to being alone with you,” I answered as I dragged my nails down his chest. He brushed his lips over my forehead as he responded to another message. “It’s okay, Nomes. I’m the reason you didn’t feel good last night.” He finally put his phone down to place his hand on my stomach. “And trust me, if holding your hair and rubbing your back is all I can do to help when you feel bad, then I’ll happily do it every night, because you are doing the hard part. It’s your body that’s being ravaged by our child. It’s your nutrients that are being used to help our baby grow. If you ever need me to do anything for you, regardless of whether or not you’re pregnant, all

After I got Naomi calmed down, I stood up, holding my hand out to her. “Would you like to dance with me, beautiful?”“Absolutely.”Once she took my hand, I led her out onto the dance floor, where I took her in my arms and began to sway back and forth with her. I loved holding her, and I didn’t want to leave anyone with any doubts about why I was with her. The longer we moved around the floor, the more relaxed she became until she was laughing and chatting happily with me about the fundraiser, asking me who everyone was, as well as who, if anyone, I was working with. After dancing, I began to lead her around the room, enthusiastically introducing her to everyone as my woman. Mine! As we were approaching Katelynn and her husband, Steve, Naomi tensed at my side. I knew she was thinking about the spiteful words that she had spouted ear

RipAs Naomi got dressed, I went to my closet to find a tux to wear. I knew the instant I caught her staring at her reflection in the car window, tugging anxiously at her hair that she was worried about how the people in my circle would perceive her to be. When I told her that the female attendees were wearing white, which was mostly the truth, the shame on her face had confirmed that I was right about what was bothering her. While I understood why she was so worried about what other people thought of her, I wish she didn’t. It never seemed to matter before, and it worried me a little.“Are you really wearing that?” she asked quietly as she appeared behind me in the mirror as I tied my bowtie.“Yep!”“But it’s white! Aren’t the women supposed to be wearing white and the men supposed to be wearing black?”I turned around to take her in my arms. “Society doesn’t dictate our relationship, Nomes, so it definitely shouldn’t dictate the clothes we wear.” I let her go to tuck her hair behind
