昼の11時、明宏はテーブルに並べられた料理を見つめながら眉をひそめた。

「あの毒婦、最近飯を持ってこないのか？いつもは食事の時間に合わせて持ってくるはずだろう？」

「罰を受けて気が緩んだんじゃないか？一体誰が彼女にそんな度胸を与えた？」

箸を並べていた秘書の手がピタリと止まり、すぐに恭しく返答した。

「中島社長、高橋様......彼女はまだプールに閉じ込められたままです」

座ろうとしていた明宏の動きが一瞬止まり、その目に驚きがよぎった。

だが、すぐにその感情を押し殺し、無関心そうに言い放った。

「問題ない。あと数日閉じ込めておけばいい」

秘書は何か言いたそうに一瞬彼を見たが、躊躇した後、口を開いた。

「しかし......中島社長、高橋様のいる部屋から悪臭が漂い始めています」

「恐らく......何かがあったのかもしれません」

「確認しに行かれませんか？」

明宏は手を止めることなく、冷たく言い放った。

「臭い？当然だろう」

「糞尿まみれの部屋だ。臭いに決まってるだろ」

「心配するな。彼女は生き残るための希望を手放さない女だから、大丈夫だ」

秘書がさらに何かを言いかけたが、明宏は不機嫌そうに眉をひそめ、彼を遮った。

「食事中だ。今はそんな気分の悪い話をするな」

「でも、ここ数日で彼女も自分の過ちに気づいたはずだ。出てきたら由紀にちゃんと謝れば、これで一件落着だ」

彼が言い終わった直後、由紀が突然ドアを開けて入ってきた。

「お兄ちゃん......」

明宏はすぐに柔らかい表情を見せ、立ち上がり、彼女を優しく抱きしめた。

「由紀、どうしたんだ？一人で家にいるのが怖かったのかい？」

そう言いながら、彼は優しく由紀の手を握りしめた。

「もう怖がらなくていい。高橋由美子には厳しい罰を与えたからな」

「だから、由紀ももう悲しまないでくれ」

由紀は顔を明宏の胸に埋め、甘えた声で言った。

「お兄ちゃんが一番優しいってわかってたよ」

「でも、私はただ由美子姉さんに謝ってほしかっただけで、罰を与えてほしいとは思わなかったんだ。お兄ちゃん、こんなことをしたら由美子姉さんに恨まれないかな？」

明宏は彼女の背中を優しく撫でながら、冷酷な口調で言った。

「心配するな、彼女にはそんなことをする度胸なんてないよ」

彼らの異常なほど親密なやりとりを見て、私は思わず笑い出した。

しかし、その笑い声を聞く者は誰もいなかった。

だって、私はもうすでに死んでいたから。

死に瀕した最後の瞬間まで、私はそのプールから抜け出せなかった。
