Drake’s pov

I felt like I was on fire.

Not literally but in the way the air scorched when I breathed. My wolf pressed against the surface of the skin, snarling and restless.

Sometime earlier this morning, the bond had opened up. I had a mate. Betsy is my mate. I hadn’t told anyone yet, couldn’t even believe it myself and it made this situation worse.

“Drake,” Nick said beside me, his voice low and cautious. “We’ve covered this sector twice, the pack’s exhausted. We need to regroup.”

I didn’t answer. My eyes were locked on the trees ahead, the colors grey even though I knew they were green. A color I hadn’t seen until Betsy wore that gown. A cruel reminder.

“She’s somewhere out there, I know that and you can’t stop me. Not tonight.”

Nick stared at me.

“That’s my sister out there,” he said quietly. “And if you lose yourself before we find her, I lose you both.”

The words hit harder than I expected. I forced the wolf down, barely.

“She’s not dead,” I said. “I’d know.”

“How would you kn

Betsy’s povI woke up feeling like I’d been run over by a truck. Apparently now that I was a beta, I’d be feeling this way until I got used to it. I dragged myself to the bathroom and splashed water on my face. My reflection looked… tired. Shadowed eyes, messy curls, and this faint glow that wasn’t there before. The two bonds kept tugging at me and even though I knew it wasn’t safe to do so, I ignored the warning and pain.I grabbed my clothes for the day, stepped out of the bathroom and nearly collided face-first with Drake. His knuckles were lifted like he’d been about to knock. His eyes widened. “Morning, Starblood.”“Do you just lurk?? Right outside my room??” I said as I remembered that he’d been standing there yesterday too. “I wasn’t lurking,” he said smoothly. “I was waiting. There’s a difference.”“You’re weird.”“And you’re late,” he replied, stepping back so I could exit. “I’ve got breakfast waiting. And training. Beta-level training, which, unfortunately for you, means

Betsy’s povI groaned as I placed my pillow over my face. The morning sun had woken me up, hitting me square in the face. My body ached in places I didn’t even know could hurt and my wolf was more conscious than ever. I sat up when I noticed that someone had stopped just outside my door.“Good morning, Starblood,” Drake said as he leaned on my doorframe. I’d noticed that he’d called me that last night but I hadn’t been able to ask him why he kept calling me by something everyone says is a curse. “Don’t tell me you’re here to lecture me again,” I muttered, dropping back on my bed.“Nah. Just here to make sure my favorite troublemaker is awake and ready for a very special surprise.”I raised my head a little to squint at him. “Special surprise?”He smirked. “You’ll see. But first, breakfast. You can’t attend surprises on an empty stomach. Even dramatic, life-changing ones.I rolled my eyes. “I’ll be down in some minutes.”*.*.*.*.*.Breakfast in the Lanemoon pack hall was a mix of sc

Drake’s povI sat on the edge of her bed. Close. Maybe too close.“Betsy,” I breathed out like a confession, “I’m sorry.”She frowned. “For what? Bleeding everywhere? Being heroic? That is very rude.”I didn’t smile this time. “For pushing you. For making you think you owe me anything. For wanting more than I should.”Her stare pinned me. “…Why do you?”I swallowed. My voice came rough. “Because I can’t stop thinking about you. Even when I try. Even when I know I shouldn’t.”Her breath hitched.“And I know Nick will hate it,” I continued. “He’ll tell me to stay away. But I can’t.”Silence.Then she reached for my hand.“I’m glad you didn’t die,” she whispered. “I don’t want you to die. Ever. I don’t know what this is. Before the whole coronation, you were just my brother’s best friend and there’s the issue with Matteo but I… seeing you being attacked like that, I can’t… I can’t lose you.”My heart kicked like a damn mule.“Betsy…” I murmured.“Yes?”“Can I…” I leaned closer, voice low

Drake’s povIf someone had told me a month ago that I’d be driving through the middle of nowhere with my beta, his terrifying baby sister, and a dude claiming he’s her mate, to meet a witch, I would’ve assumed I’d taken a head injury.Yet here I was, behind the wheel, trying to ignore Matteo breathing in the back and the way Nick’s head was tilted at a bad angle. And Betsy? She was in the passenger seat, staring out the window like the trees offended her existence.A few minutes later, we arrived in front of the witch’s house. At least according to the address that had been given to us. “We’re here.” I announce.Matteo shakes Nick awake.I sigh, turning to my best friend.“Why did you come on this if you were going to sleep the entire drive?”“Gotta have my beauty sleep.” He quips.I roll my eyes and turn to Betsy who’s still looking outside the window. “You keep frowning at that forest and it’s going to apologize,” I said casually. She didn’t look at me. I risked a glance, her fing

Betsy’s pov When I come back to my senses, my chest feels tight and my limbs are weak.I’m in Drake’s arms and we’re running to the packhouse, it in sight. There’s a shiver deep in my bones and my wolf is stirring more than it ever has.“Betsy. We’ll be back home soon and we’ll figure out a way to help you.”I smiled softly, my eyes closed. The woods behind us suddenly erupted with movement. Shadows leapt from behind the trees. Rogue wolves. Wolves we had never seen before, eyes glowing red in the night.Drake placed me on my feet and Nick carried me, we reached the pack house in a couple of seconds as Drake stayed back to fight alongside Matteo. Nick barked at a couple of gamma wolves to join the fight as he carried me to the healer’s room. I could feel Drake’s emotions once again. Anger with a tinge of fear. “Will Drake be fine?”“Against weak wolves like that? He’s fine. He’ll probably be a bit worried about you and try to get back here as soon as possible.”“Why… Why did that

Betsy’s povFor a moment, I didn’t feel the cold.I felt nothing.Like someone hit a mute button on my nerves. At first pressure surrounded me from all angles, like a palm was being pressed into my chest but then it vanished. Arms wrapped around my waist and heat overwhelmed me suddenly, swallowing the freezing air like it didn’t exist. “Let go of me.” I whispered. The world felt like it was skipping, scenes jumping too quickly to make sense. Branches scraping past in a blur of motion, snow exploding beneath fast footsteps.I blinked up… gold eyes.It wasn’t Drake’s storm-gray ones or Nick’s ice blue. But gold. Bright as sunlight streaking through the clouds.“Hold on,” the stranger muttered, his voice rough and steady. “I’ve got you.”Something in his tone reminded me of a memory that didn’t exist… one that wasn’t mine but felt familiar. Like a song you swear you’ve heard but can’t name. I grabbed onto his jacket, fingers digging into the fabric.“Who a—”“Later,” he cut in, focus
