Chapter 89

The Last Choice

The black doorway hung above the Last Kingdom.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Even the wind had stopped.

Kael stood with Eclipse in his hand, staring at the figure emerging from the darkness.

At first, there was only a silhouette.

Then a face.

Kael's face.

But unlike the First Choice, this version had no warmth in its eyes.

No sadness.

No anger.

Nothing.

It was completely empty.

Lucian suddenly stopped smiling.

“Dada…”

Kael looked down.

“What is it?”

Lucian pointed toward the figure.

“Bad.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“I know.”

The figure stepped through the doorway.

The black portal closed behind it.

Astrael raised his weapon.

“Identify yourself.”

The figure looked at him.

“You already know what I am.”

Astrael's face went pale.

“No.”

Eryndor stepped forward.

“Then tell us.”

The figure looked at him.

“I am what remains when every choice has been made.”

Silence.

Kael frowned.

“The Last Choice.”

The figure smiled.

“Yes.”

Kael tightened his grip on Eclipse.

“What do you want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the final possibility.”

Kael shook his head.

“The First Choice said I was its final form.”

“He was wrong.”

The figure stepped closer.

“He was the beginning.”

“I am the end.”

The sky suddenly darkened.

Across the merged world, people looked upward.

Every star disappeared.

Every moon went dark.

And then…

A single white light appeared.

The Last Choice raised one hand.

“That is your world.”

Kael stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Showing you the end.”

The white light expanded.

Kael saw cities.

Kingdoms.

Forests.

Oceans.

People.

Everyone he had ever known.

Then one by one…

They disappeared.

Not destroyed.

Not killed.

Simply erased.

Kael's heart stopped.

“No.”

The Last Choice continued.

“This is what happens if you refuse me.”

Kael raised Eclipse.

“You're threatening me.”

“No.”

The figure looked at him.

“I am showing you the consequence.”

Lyra stepped beside Kael.

“Don't listen.”

The Last Choice looked at her.

“You died seven times.”

Lyra froze.

Kael's expression changed.

The figure continued.

“You died in the first timeline.”

“You died protecting him in the second.”

“You died giving birth to Lucian in the third.”

“You were murdered by the Void in the fourth.”

“You sacrificed yourself in the fifth.”

“You disappeared in the sixth.”

“And in the seventh…”

The figure paused.

“You never existed.”

Lyra's face went pale.

Kael stepped in front of her.

“Enough.”

The Last Choice smiled.

“You already know these memories.”

“Yes.”

“And you still want to pretend you can save everyone?”

Kael raised Eclipse.

“I don't pretend.”

The Last Choice looked at the sword.

“Then prove it.”

It snapped its fingers.

The world changed.

Kael was suddenly standing in a burning city.

He turned.

“Lyra?”

She was there.

Older.

Wounded.

Holding a sword.

Beside her stood Lucian.

A grown man now.

Kael stared.

“What is this?”

“A possibility.”

Lucian looked at him.

“Father.”

Kael's heart broke.

“You're alive.”

Lucian smiled.

“For now.”

The sky above them cracked.

A massive Void creature descended.

Kael raised Eclipse.

“Stay behind me.”

Lucian shook his head.

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“I've seen this before.”

Kael frowned.

“What?”

“This is the choice.”

The world froze.

The Last Choice appeared behind them.

“One life.”

“Two lives.”

“Or the world.”

Kael looked at Lyra.

Then Lucian.

Then the burning city.

He knew this trap.

He had lived it seven times.

But something was different.

Lucian wasn't afraid.

His son looked directly at him.

“Father.”

“What?”

“Don't choose me.”

Kael's heart sank.

“Lucian…”

“Don't choose Mother either.”

Lyra looked at him.

“Lucian, what are you saying?”

He smiled.

“I'm saying you don't have to choose.”

The Last Choice's expression changed.

Kael noticed.

“You're afraid.”

The figure's smile disappeared.

Lucian stepped beside his father.

“It can't force us.”

Kael looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I remember.”

“Remember what?”

Lucian touched his father's chest.

“The first time you refused.”

Kael froze.

A memory flashed.

Not one of the seven timelines.

Something before them.

Kael as a child.

Elara holding him.

Eryndor kneeling beside them.

And a voice whispering from the darkness:

“Choose your destiny.”

Young Kael had looked at his parents.

Then said:

“No.”

The memory vanished.

Kael stared at Lucian.

“That happened?”

Lucian nodded.

“That's why they erased your memory.”

“Who?”

“The ones who were afraid of what you would become.”

Kael turned toward the Last Choice.

“You.”

The figure said nothing.

Kael stepped closer.

“You've been controlling the timelines.”

“Yes.”

“You created the choices.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated the Void.”

“Yes.”

“You used my father.”

“Yes.”

“You used my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you used me.”

The Last Choice smiled.

“Yes.”

Kael lowered Eclipse.

The figure frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Kael looked at Lyra.

Then Lucian.

Then his friends.

“I've finally realized something.”

“What?”

“You only have power when I play your game.”

The Last Choice's expression hardened.

Kael turned toward the burning city.

“You keep giving me two choices.”

“Save Lyra or save Lucian.”

“Save the world or save my family.”

“Become king or become a monster.”

“But those aren't choices.”

The figure's eyes narrowed.

“What are they?”

“Your rules.”

Kael raised Eclipse.

“And I don't accept them.”

The world trembled.

The Last Choice stepped backward.

“No.”

Kael smiled.

“Yes.”

He drove Eclipse into the ground.

The entire illusion shattered.

The burning city disappeared.

The seven timelines appeared around them.

Each one.

Every version.

Every death.

Every life.

All of them.

Kael saw himself in every timeline.

And for the first time…

They didn't fight.

They stood together.

The First King.

The dark Kael.

The fire Kael.

The lonely Kael.

The broken Kael.

The loving Kael.

The king who had surrendered.

All of them looked toward him.

Then one by one…

They walked into Kael.

Their memories became his.

Their pain became his.

Their strength became his.

Their love became his.

Kael screamed.

The Last Choice staggered backward.

“No!”

Astrael stared.

“He's becoming whole.”

Eryndor smiled.

“He finally did it.”

Elara's eyes filled with tears.

“My son.”

Kael rose.

His armor had changed.

Silver.

Gold.

Black.

All three colors moved across it like living energy.

Eclipse floated beside him.

The sword had become something completely different.

No longer a weapon.

A key.

The Last Choice stared.

“You cannot defeat me.”

Kael looked at it.

“I'm not going to.”

The figure hesitated.

“What?”

Kael extended his hand.

“I'm giving you a choice.”

The Last Choice stared at him.

“You…”

Kael nodded.

“You've controlled every choice.”

“You've forced every possibility.”

“You've never been given one yourself.”

The figure's expression changed.

“What choice?”

Kael looked at it.

“Stay.”

“Or leave.”

Silence.

The Last Choice laughed.

“You think that's enough?”

“No.”

Kael stepped forward.

“But it's yours.”

The figure's laughter faded.

For the first time…

It didn't know what to do.

Kael continued.

“If you stay, you become part of this world.”

“You'll feel pain.”

“You'll feel love.”

“You'll lose people.”

“You'll make mistakes.”

“But you'll live.”

“And if you leave…”

Kael pointed toward the darkness beyond the kingdom.

“You become nothing.”

“Free from every choice.”

The Last Choice stared at him.

“No one has ever offered me that.”

Kael smiled.

“That's because everyone was afraid of you.”

The figure looked at Lucian.

The child smiled.

“Choose.”

The Last Choice's eyes began glowing.

The entire kingdom waited.

Then…

It laughed.

Not cruelly.

Not angrily.

Almost peacefully.

“I choose…”

The ground shook.

The Last Choice looked toward Kael.

“…to stay.”

The darkness disappeared.

The black doorway collapsed.

The stars returned.

The seven timelines vanished completely.

Only one world remained.

Kael lowered Eclipse.

“It worked.”

Astrael slowly lowered his weapon.

“I don't believe it.”

Eryndor smiled.

“You should.”

Suddenly…

The Last Choice screamed.

Kael turned.

The figure was falling apart.

“What happened?”

Elara's expression changed.

“He couldn't survive the choice.”

Kael ran toward it.

“Why?”

“He was created from possibility.”

“And possibility cannot survive when there is only one reality.”

The Last Choice looked at Kael.

Its body became light.

“I understand now.”

Kael caught its hand.

“What?”

The figure smiled.

“Why you were chosen.”

Kael's eyes filled with tears.

“Don't go.”

“I have to.”

“Why?”

“Because every ending creates another beginning.”

The figure disappeared.

A single white spark remained.

It floated into Lucian's hand.

Lucian looked at it.

“Dada.”

Kael stared.

“What is it?”

Lucian smiled.

“Tomorrow.”

The word echoed.

Then the sky changed.

A new sun rose over the Last Kingdom.

For the first time…

There was no Void.

No broken timeline.

No ancient enemy.

No prophecy.

Only one world.

One future.

One choice.

Kael turned toward Lyra.

She smiled.

“You finally did it.”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“We did.”

He looked at Lucian.

Then Marcus.

Caelan.

Selene.

Aether.

Astrael.

His mother.

His father.

Everyone who had survived.

Kael smiled.

“For the first time…”

“We don't know what happens next.”

Lyra took his hand.

“Isn't that the point?”

Kael looked toward the sunrise.

“Yes.”

Behind them, Eryndor quietly removed his crown.

He placed it on the ground.

Then walked away.

Elara followed him.

Astrael watched them leave.

“Where are they going?”

Kael smiled.

“Somewhere they can finally be people.”

“And you?”

Kael looked at Lyra.

Then Lucian.

He looked at the world beyond the kingdom.

“I think…”

He took a deep breath.

“…I'm finally going home.”

But as they began walking away…

Lucian suddenly stopped.

His eyes turned silver.

He looked toward the horizon.

Kael noticed.

“Lucian?”

The boy pointed toward the sky.

A tiny black crack had appeared between two stars.

Kael's smile disappeared.

“What is that?”

Lucian whispered,

“Not an enemy.”

“Then what?”

Lucian looked at his father.

“A door.”

Kael stared at the crack.

Something was standing behind it.

Something watching.

Something waiting.

Then a familiar voice whispered through the opening.

“The story was never about the king.”

Kael raised Eclipse.

The voice continued.

“It was about what comes after the king.”

Lucian's eyes glowed brighter.

And the crack began to open.
