Chapter 1

I froze at the corner of the hallway, a glass of water in my hand.

Then, my mom Lillian Montgomery's voice came from the room. It was soft and tender in a way I had never heard in all 18 years of my life. "Don't worry. She won't find out. And even if she does, what's she going to do about it?"

At that, my dad, Nicholas Clark, laughed.

"Exactly. You two look identical. Who's going to know the difference? Besides, we've raised her all these years. What's wrong with letting you take her score?"

My younger sister, Olivia Clark, spoke up. There was a hint of unease in her voice as she asked, "Mom, what if she hears us?"

"That nerd is probably still in her room going over every answer. You know how she is. She'll check them over and over until she's satisfied. She wouldn't even think to pay attention to what we're saying."

Mom scoffed and added, "And even if she did hear us, what could she possibly do?"

"Your mother and I have already taken care of everything," Dad chimed in. "We've got someone lined up. As soon as the acceptance letter comes in, we'll throw a big party for you."

Only then did Olivia relax. Her voice slipped back into its usual sugary, almost childlike tone. "Thanks, Mom and Dad. I knew you loved me best."

I stood rooted to the spot, and my hand began to tremble. I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

Just a few hours earlier, when my SAT results came out, I checked my score.

550. I was completely stunned.

I had expected to score well over 1450. I'd checked my answers after the test, and my Math and Reading and Writing sections had gone almost perfectly. I'd done consistently well across the board.

I even checked my registration number three times to make sure I hadn't entered it incorrectly. But there it was, plain as day on the screen. "Total score: 550."

I thought there had been a glitch, so I checked again. But it was still 550.

I stumbled out of my room and found my parents watching TV in the living room. When I told them my score, shock and sympathy flashed across their faces.

Mom was the first to come over and pull me into a hug. She wrapped an arm around my shoulder.

"It's okay, Victoria. One bad test doesn't matter. Your dad and I will support you when you retake it," she said, her voice softer than I had ever heard it.

Dad came over, too. He patted me on the back and reassured me, "Don't be upset. It's just one test. You can take it again next time."

Olivia peeked out from her room. She didn't say anything, but she looked concerned as well.

At the time, warmth spread through my chest. They had never treated me particularly well, but at least when it mattered most, they were on my side.

That evening, Mom made a huge dinner, with barbecued ribs, lemon-herb butter salmon, grilled shrimp, and my favorite honey-crisp pork tenderloin.

Dad even opened a bottle of red wine and poured me some.

"Come on, Victoria. Let's have a drink. You didn't do well this time, but I'm not blaming you. Next year, you'll get into one of the best schools in the country and show them all."

My eyes stung with unshed tears. I held my glass, my voice thick with emotion as I said, "Mom, Dad, thank you. I promise I'll get into a top school next year. I won't embarrass you."

Beside us, Olivia grinned. "You've got this, Victoria. I believe in you."

The whole evening felt so warm and comforting that it almost seemed unreal. Growing up, this was the kind of treatment I had only ever seen Olivia receive.

After dinner, Mom urged me to get to bed early. She said I'd been working myself too hard lately and needed to catch up on some sleep.

I showered, went back to my room, and tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about my score. No matter how I looked at it, it made no sense.

In all three years of high school, I'd never scored below 1210. There was no way I could have gotten a 550.

I couldn't let it go, so I got out of bed and checked my score again. It was still 550.

I went over the answers online again and again. I knew I'd gotten those questions right.

I spent the next few hours restless in bed. By the time it was past 1:00 am, I was so thirsty that I got up for some water. And that was when I heard them talking.

  • My Family Celebrates When I Flunk the Exams   Chapter 14

During my sophomore year of college, I heard what had become of Olivia. Emma, a distant cousin from back home, was the one who told me. She said Olivia had gone south and found a job at an electronics factory, working on an assembly line. She'd found a boyfriend there, a man from out of town whose family was struggling financially. She worked at the factory for more than six months before getting pregnant. Then, she quit her job, followed the man back to his hometown, and married him there.Emma sent me a few pictures. Olivia had gained a lot of weight. She wore a flower-print coat, and her hair was loosely tied back, her face blank. She held a baby whose face was streaked with snot, the child bawling in her arms. Behind them was a rundown house with crumbling walls. Much of the plaster had fallen away, and plastic sheeting covered the windows. I zoomed in on the pictures and stared at them for a long time. That face, identical to mine, looked exhausted and numb. Then, I d

By the end of September, the weather had begun to cool. The leaves on the campus trees had begun to turn yellow. Whenever the wind picked up, they came fluttering down, carpeting the ground. Gradually, I settled into college life. I got used to the food in the dining hall, my roommates' antics, the professors' accents in class, and even the sound of pages turning in the library.Every now and then, I found myself thinking about the past. But those memories had faded like old photographs, growing blurrier with each passing day. …In the middle of October, Ms. Ross called me. "Victoria, how have you been?"Her voice was as gentle as ever, with a slight rasp to it."I'm doing well, Ms. Ross. My classes aren't too demanding, and I've been eating well. I've even put on a few pounds."I heard her laugh on the other end. "That's good to hear. You were always so skinny. A few extra pounds will do you good. Oh, I wanted to tell you that the verdict in your case is in."I tightened m

Autumn arrived, and a new academic year began. I stood at the college gates with my suitcase in hand, looking up at its name gleaming in gold above me. This was my college. I had earned my place here with a score of 1470. After everything I had been through, it was finally mine. I took a deep breath, then walked through the gates. Sunlight bathed the campus, reaching every corner. The sycamore leaves were beginning to turn yellow, and they rustled whenever the wind stirred them.I walked along the tree-lined path, surrounded by new students whose faces glowed with excitement and anticipation. I was one of them now. I was no longer the girl who hid in a corner and ate cold leftovers, the girl her parents had used as a tool, or the girl who had spent her whole life feeling unloved.I was someone new now. …When I checked in, the academic advisor looked over my file and smiled. "Victoria Clark, 1470. You have the highest score in the department this year."I smiled and said

It didn't take long for the results of the investigation to come out. The state Department of Education issued an official statement. It read, "The investigation determined that Olivia Clark had fraudulently used her twin sister Victoria Clark's SAT score as her own. The employees involved have been placed under investigation. Olivia Clark's admission has been revoked, and her SAT score has been invalidated."Mr. Vance was fired from his position at the school, while officials in the district admissions office were also investigated and held accountable. My parents were also placed under investigation for allegedly paying bribes. Once the story hit the news, it sparked a huge public backlash. The story of twin sisters whose parents had switched their SAT scores quickly went viral, drawing a flood of angry comments online. One comment read, "What kind of parents would do that to their own kid?""The younger sister had to know about it too, right? What kind of people are they?"

Everyone turned to look at the people who had just walked in, wondering what was going on. Mom's face went pale, while Dad opened his mouth as if to speak. But in the end, no words came out. Olivia stood in front of the main table, and her smile faltered."Which one of you is Victoria Clark, and which is Olivia Clark?" one of the investigators asked. I rose and said, "I'm Victoria Clark."Olivia stood rooted to the spot, her lips trembling. Then, one of the women from the investigation team walked up to her. "Are you Olivia Clark?"Olivia didn't answer. She turned toward our parents, panic flashing across her face. Mom rushed forward and planted herself between Olivia and the investigators. "There must be some mistake! My daughter's score is legitimate! You can't do this!"Dad came over too, trying to stop the investigators. "Please, today is supposed to be a happy occasion. Whatever this is about, can't we talk about it another day?""Mr. Clark, we have enough evidence. W

Waiting was the hardest part. Every day, I went to class at my prep school, came home for dinner, and put up with my parents' forced concern and Olivia's constant digs. Before long, Olivia's college acceptance letter arrived. She'd been accepted to one of the top ten universities in the country to study finance.Mom clutched the letter and burst into tears. Dad, too, was visibly moved as he slipped an arm around Olivia's shoulders. "I knew it. I always knew you'd make us proud," he said. They decided to throw a huge celebration on August 16, spare no expense, and invite every relative and friend. Olivia picked out a red dress to wear to the celebration. Then, Mom took her to get her hair done and treated her to a full day of beauty treatments, spending a small fortune on her.I stood in the corner and watched it all unfold. Somehow, I felt calm. Soon, this would all be over.…On August 16, the celebration was held at the best hotel in town. Mom wore a striking red dress,
