Chapter 2

Author: Roly Poly
I lowered my eyes to the piano and announced, "Apologies, but I don't do secret affairs, and I won't marry a divorced man. Please leave, Mr. Lane."

After my repeated humiliating dismissals, Holden finally lost his temper. "Serena, all the elites know we've been together for years. Our parents have met, and I've lived in your house. If you don't marry me, who else could you possibly marry?"

With that, he stormed off in anger.

A bitter smile curled my pale lips. I knew then that the Holden who would spend a fortune for me, who would fight bare-handed against thugs to keep me safe… was gone. From now on, he was just Eve's husband.

Maybe I should've cut ties the first time he chose Eve over me, but I was too naive, believing that the years we shared were stronger than a woman who had left him at his lowest.

I was proven terribly wrong. They were childhood sweethearts with a strong bond, while I was just a distraction to help him pass the time when she was away.

Almost as if afraid I might change my mind, Ryland showed up with his parents the next day to propose.

Their sincerity was almost impossible to ignore. The gifts alone filled the living room, and the multimillion-dollar contract they brought spoke volumes about how much they valued me.

My parents were tempted, though their main concern was my happiness. Ryland was notorious for his reckless ways, and they feared I'd suffer if I married him.

It took some effort, but I managed to persuade them that money was more practical than love—anytime, anywhere.

Ryland might be spoiled, but he was the Crofts' only heir. As long as he didn't commit crimes, my life with him would be nothing less than luxurious.

I was instructing the butler, Adam, to put the gifts away when I turned and saw Eve walking in, clinging to Holden's arm. Her eyes flickered with envy at the dazzling jewelry spread across the room. Holden, on the other hand, frowned in displeasure.

"I told you we're not marrying for another six months, so why are you telling people the wedding is happening as planned and preparing all these wedding gifts? Do you have any idea how annoying that is?"

I froze, realizing that he must have mistaken the Crofts' wedding gifts as the ones I was preparing to marry him.

Eve stepped closer and said pitifully, "Please, Serena. Just let me borrow Holden for a little while. I really hate the idea of marrying Ryland."

She reached out to take my hand, and my gaze caught the diamond ring glinting on her finger. I froze.

That was Holden's parents' pledge of love, meant to be passed down to their daughter-in-law. I had begged Holden for years to slip it onto my finger when we officially got engaged, but he had brushed me off with a pair of plain rings.

And now, it had glaringly shown up on Eve's finger, even without a proper wedding.

Eve shot me a triumphant look. She slid the hand with the ring into Holden's pocket and pulled out a small box, shoving it into his hand.

"You got a gift for Serena, so don't be stubborn now. Go and make things right with her!"

Holden's expression was cold as he reluctantly shoved the box into my hands. When I didn't take it, it fell to the floor with a sharp clatter, and a crudely-made silver bangle rolled out.

He immediately flew into a fit of rage. "Serena, what is wrong with you?"

What was wrong with me? That cheap trinket was barely fit to be my dog's collar. How could he make it seem as if I were the difficult one?

The contempt and mockery on my face must have been too obvious because his anger spiked, and he kicked the bangle across the floor. "Fine! If you don't want it, forget it!"

"Why would you do this, Serena? Both of us picked it out just for you!" Eve sounded hurt.

Holden glared at me with resentment as if I were being ungrateful. Eve bent down to pick up the bangle and looked up at me with timid, pleading eyes. "I know you're upset, but you shouldn't dismiss Holden's gesture just like that."

She put on a show of pity, brushing off the nonexistent dust on the bangle as if to soothe me.

"Look at that smug face! Seems like he forgot how wasted he got when he heard Serena was engaged to Holden! He was crying on my shoulder and swearing he'd crash the wedding!" one of Ryland's friends jeered."Ryland's a hopeless romantic. After just one meal, he ended up pledging his whole life to her.""That's not all. I heard he even followed her around once and almost got arrested!" The voices trailed off with laughter. Those words hit like a blow and stirred deep, buried memories within me. That was when I realized that Ryland was the broke student I had once saved on a trip.I stood frozen, stunned. Well, he had definitely gotten better-looking since then.Just when I was about to slip away, I heard more teasing from inside. "You don't get it. He filled an entire room with portraits of her and spent nights drowning in his own sorrow. And he was the one who started the rumor that he was marrying Eve. He'd do anything just to marry Serena!"At that, Holden could no longer stay

I looked down at Holden and said coolly, "You brought this upon yourself, didn't you?"Truthfully, I couldn't make sense of him anymore. Once, he was everything to me. I had bent and lowered myself to please him, only to earn his contempt and betrayal. And now that he had married Eve as he wished, he still clung to me. He wasn't concerned about what damage his behavior would cause me. To me, that wasn't love; it was pure obsession! With that, I took Ryland's arm, brushed past Holden, and stepped inside without another word.Sadly, there was no talking sense into Holden, who stubbornly refused to listen.According to my best friend, Mia, his divorce from Eve wasn't going smoothly. The latter had agreed to get a divorce once she got through the crisis, but now, she was refusing to let go.I smiled, knowing that he was just getting a taste of his medicine. One afternoon, I was at a cafe with my girlfriends when Eve appeared out of nowhere. She dropped to her knees in front of me a

Ryland and I exchanged rings under the witness of our friends and family. When he leaned in and kissed me amidst the volley of applause and cheers, my heart skipped a beat. I met his warm, charming eyes. After returning to the Croft residence, I immediately apologized. "I'm sorry. I had no idea Holden would show up like that."Ryland's soft, warm eyes stayed on me as he chuckled. "You don't ever have to apologize to me."Something about the way he looked at me left me suddenly at a loss. He leaned close and asked gently, "Can I?" I felt my cheeks heat up but managed a small nod.Immediately after, he swept me off my feet and pressed me down gently. Looking into my eyes, he leaned in and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Trust me, Serena. I'll make you happy."That night, we lost ourselves in tangled sheets and whispered promises. He led me through a night of storms and let me go only when the sun began rising on the horizon.I woke up the next day to find the sun already han

The sight of Ryland in a full wedding suit left Holden stunned and momentarily at a loss. When he snapped out of the shock, he eyed Ryland with wariness. "What are you doing here?"Ryland's lips curled into a triumphant smirk. "Isn't it obvious? I'm here to take my bride."Holden blinked in complete disbelief. Then, as if a thought struck him, he hesitantly asked, "What do you mean?"His gaze turned to me, and his voice was trembling slightly as he asked for my clarification. "Serena, he's lying, isn't he?"I calmly met his eyes. "He isn't. He's the man I'm marrying, and today's our wedding day—""That's impossible! You must be lying!" Holden snapped and cut me off in fury. "We're engaged, and you've always loved me. You'd never marry someone else!"I shot him a mocking look. It was funny how he could feign shock and deep love when he was the man who had broken every promise first.A flicker of panic flashed in Holden's eyes as everything seemed to click into place. He pointed a

"Mrs. Lane must be Mr. Lane's true love." Another lady in the flower shop sighed. "Haven't you heard? Long relationships rarely make it to marriage. Real love is about possession. Flash weddings are how you know it's the real deal."I never thought I'd overhear my own gossip story one day. Without a word, I turned to leave.I hadn't gone far when someone called out my name. "Serena!"When I looked up in the direction of the sound, I saw Holden with Eve nestled against his side and a bouquet of roses in her arms."Are you here for flowers too?" Holden's expression was cool. He was probably still brooding over our last encounter.Eve noticed my empty arms and said sweetly, "Oh, I'm so sorry, Serena. Holden bought all the flowers for me, but if you really want them, you can have mine."She stepped forward as if offering me the bouquet in kindness, but I took a wary step back, not falling for her trick. A single bouquet meant nothing to me, and I had no interest in taking anyone's

I laughed at Eve's fake, dramatic performance. She was as sharp as ever, twisting the truth with just a few words to make me the villain when the bet had been her idea. Now that she had won and I had stepped aside without a word of protest, what was the point of her act?I gave her a cool glance and said in a distant voice, "You two are married now, and I've broken off my engagement. We've got nothing to do with each other anymore, so let's not cross paths again if it's unnecessary."Of course, they believed that was just my angry outburst and weren't convinced.Clutching the silver bangle, Eve tried to slip it onto my wrist. "Don't be upset, Serena. Holden made this himself. Even if I want one, I can't get it."Annoyed, I shoved her away. "I said no!"Though I barely used any strength, she flung herself sideways and crashed into the shelf like I had pushed her with all my might. Tears instantly streamed down her face as she pitifully whimpered. "I understand I've crossed the l
