Chapter 6

Author: Oatmeal
The lawyer had the papers drafted by early the next morning.

Selina went through the papers carefully once they were in her hands. The agreement left every asset she owned under her sole control.

She came out of the study and headed for the dining room.

Charles was sitting with Susie over breakfast, and there were several new bodyguards on the grounds, hired by Charles specifically to protect Susie.

Selina walked in.

There were fresh flowers on the table, the kind Susie liked, and the breakfast was everything Susie liked. There wasn't even a place setting for her.

Selina didn't say much. She sat down and called a maid over to bring her a place setting herself.

Only then did Charles notice the missing setting.

Since she had not complained, Charles assumed she had cooled off. He stood and picked up his suit jacket. "I thought you were working in the study and wouldn't have time to eat.

"I have a meeting at the docks soon, so I can't stay with you."

Selina's wrist stiffened. She looked up at him, then produced a document. "This is the medical equipment supply contract we closed at the hunting grounds. Sign it, and I'll hand it over to Don Winthrop today."

Charles's eyes lit up for a second. "You already closed it?"

He seemed to breathe easier.

"Sign it, they're pushing me for it. Right here." Selina opened the contract and pointed at the last page.

Charles didn't look it over. He put his name down.

Selina had always been the one to negotiate his deals, and by the time they landed all he had to do was sign, so this time he didn't think twice about it either.

Once he was done signing, Charles picked up his jacket to go.

Susie suddenly stood up and reached for her coat too, and said plaintively, "It isn't safe for me here alone. I'd rather go with him. There are more bodyguards that way."

Charles said, "Didn't you say you weren't getting involved? Then I'm the only one left to keep Susie safe."

"Let's go." Charles went out first.

Susie followed close behind him out of the dining room.

Selina was left sitting alone at the table, and none of it mattered anymore. With the divorce papers in hand, the knot in her chest finally loosened.

Once Charles and Susie were gone, Selina sent the signed papers to Adrian.

[I'm divorced. Nothing he does will affect me.]

After she sent the message, she packed up everything she owned.

One more day and she could leave this place.

But that afternoon, Charles's assistant, Marisa Cole, called her. "Something happened, Ms. Campbell. Mr. Romano was beaten by Susie's ex-husband. He's in the hospital now."

Selina knew exactly what had happened without asking.

Charles and Susie must have gone out together and run into Bruno, and Bruno had been carrying his grudge already, so he'd gone at them.

But Charles had ended up in the hospital, which meant it was bad.

None of it was her problem, though. She hung up and went on packing.

It took until dark to finish packing everything.

She was carrying her luggage downstairs when Susie came home. Her eyes were red, but when she saw Selina, her expression was composed and cold.

It was nothing like her usual manner.

When she saw that Selina had packed everything, her expression turned smug.

"I didn't expect you to know your place and move out on your own. From now on I'll be living at the estate, because Charles worries about me."

"Do whatever you want." Selina couldn't even be bothered to say more.

She had seen this face of Susie's clearly in her last life. There was nothing worth arguing about.

Selina's indifference darkened Susie's expression.

Susie stepped closer and forced herself to sound calm. "You should have moved out long ago. If I hadn't stepped aside for the two of you back then, you would never have had this life. Everything you have now is what I let you have.

"Charles loves me, and I wouldn't even have to say a word. He'd want to throw you out on his own."

Selina's wrists shook. Their parents had favored Susie since childhood and could not bear to let her near the family's illegal operations, so they put everything in Selina's name and exposed her to danger again and again.

As for the marriage to Bruno, Susie was the one who had insisted on it, because she wanted his power, and Charles had nothing back then.

Everything Selina had now, she had built herself, and here was Susie calling it a gift.

The fire Selina had been holding down finally got away from her. She raised a hand and slapped Susie across the face.

Susie never saw it coming and went straight to the floor.

Charles returned with his injuries at that exact moment and walked in on the scene. Fury swept through him. One hand pressed to his chest, he shouted, "What are you doing?!"

He went to Susie in a panic and helped her up.

Susie clutched her cheek and burst into tears. "It's my fault for opening my mouth. All I asked was why Selina hadn't gone to the hospital to see you, and she..."

Susie threw herself into his arms and cried harder. "And you're hurt. You need someone to look after you. I was going to ask Selina if we could take turns staying with you, but instead she's leaving with her suitcases."

Charles's face went black. His lips shook as he looked at the luggage beside Selina.

He closed his eyes, and there was nothing but disappointment on his face.

"Selina, I never knew you were this kind of person. Susie is your sister, something like this happens to her, and all you can think about is getting away. Are you that afraid of a little trouble?!"

Charles reached out and shoved Selina.

The shove sent Selina sprawling, her knee cracking against the floor and blooming red.

Pain shot through her and she sucked in a breath.

Her heart was pounding.

She forced herself up and kept her face calm. "Think whatever you like."

"You want to go! Then don't ever come back!"

Charles roared it at her.

Selina's grip tightened around the handle of her suitcase. That was exactly what she wanted to hear, and she was never coming back.

She did not hesitate. Ignoring the sting in her knee, she headed for the door. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught the trace of a smile on Susie's lips.

Once she was outside she heard Charles say to Susie, "She has nowhere to go but the country house. Let her be."

Selina laughed coldly and disappeared into the dark.

At last she left Southport, and she would never come back.

That same day she went back to the grounds to pack. And again, she used the side gate. But she had barely stepped out of the car when a figure rushed at her and grabbed her wrist, stopping her short.Selina's head snapped around.Charles stood before her looking ruined, his suit torn and his uncut hair a tangled mess."Selina, will you just let me explain?"You won't even give me a chance to explain, over Susie? After all the years we've been together!"There was no sympathy in Selina, only endless disgust."Enough!"Charles was so startled by the shout that he froze.Selina had never lost her temper at him like that. Even in their worst arguments, she had never let it get away from her."Selina, don't be like this, we can talk."I've been waiting out here over a month. Can you really be that hard?"Selina threw his hand off in distaste."Everything you've done only makes me hate you more."Did I make you wait out here for a month? Why should I be soft about it? What are you to me?"Ch

Selina simply felt that nothing was going her way today.Seeing how cold she was, Charles softened all over and lowered his head. "I know everything that happened."I know all of it was Susie. It was her, and if she hadn't called me, I never would have gone to Sicily to bring her back."I've already thrown her out. There will be nothing between us ever again. I was only good to her because she was your sister. I was thinking of you."I'm begging you, stop being angry with me, please?"Selina found the whole speech nauseating, and said coldly, "We're divorced. Please stop bothering me."You've seen for yourself now, so let me be clear. I don't want anything to do with you and I don't want to see you again."Tears filled Charles's eyes. He reached for Selina, but she slipped away from him with ease. His hand hung in the air, unsure what to do with itself."I know you won't forgive me easily, but you must still love me. I know I shouldn't have brought Susie back."There will never be a ne

"Let him." Selina had been letting it go, little by little.Hearing Charles's name did nothing to her anymore."Say the word and I'll deal with it for you."Selina pressed her lips together, more moved than she wanted to be.Back when she was with Charles, Charles never discussed a single thing with her, never asked what she thought. There had been a client once who said the wrong thing to her at a party.Afterward Charles hired a hitman and had the man dealt with right in the street, and it was nearly traced back to them, which would have been a disaster. She had been the one to step in and clean it up and keep it quiet. She had told him afterward that he was too reckless, and he thought it proved he loved her and wanted to protect her, and saw nothing wrong with what he'd done. And somehow, back then, Selina had let that argument convince her.Strange, looking back on it.Coming out of the office, Selina felt unsettled. To take the edge off it, she threw herself into work.Every day

It took Selina less than half a month to learn the hunting grounds inside out.The Winthrop family dealt with old money and politicians because the hunting grounds were ideal places to discuss business.More than a dozen hunting grounds held tens of thousands of wild animals.Selina spent most of her time walking the grounds every day, and Adrian was at her side nearly every one of them.Because of that welcome party, everyone in the family knew who she was.In her last life, she had given up this chance for Susie. This time, she meant to hold on with both hands, and that determination brought pressure with it.Selina moved out of Adrian's estate. She took one of the cabins on the grounds. She could get used to living anywhere, but Adrian thought it was beneath her.So he had the cabin rebuilt into a large house of her own, with a garden laid out in front. He even thought to hire a gardener to keep it up for her.Selina said, "You really didn't have to go to the trouble. I've slept und

Charles stood there, stunned.Every word of Susie's accusation was correct. He was the one who had disregarded Selina's feelings first and gone to Sicily on his own authority to bring Susie back to the estate. He was the one who had held Susie in the bedroom. If he had listened to Selina, or cared at all how she felt, it would never have come to this between them. They wouldn't be divorced.Charles crouched on the floor and broke down sobbing. It was the first time Susie had seen him like this, and something like pity rose in her. She walked over slowly and put her arms around him."Don't be like this. Selina's gone, and she isn't coming back. I really do love you. We'll have a good life together."Whatever she could give you, I can give you too."Susie brought her face close to his.Charles bit down on his lip and swallowed the tears back. He looked up at Susie, and the pain in him only deepened. Then all at once he pushed her away, stood up, and left without a word. When he returned

The circle opened, and Susie looked up. Her eyes met Charles's.He opened his mouth to speak, but Susie looked away and smiled at the partners. "If everyone's agreed, come into the office and we'll sign."The partners laughed and crowded toward his office one after another, satisfaction all over their faces.Charles stood frozen. Susie having solved the problem gave him no pleasure at all. If anything, he had hoped to see Selina when the crowd parted.Susie said, smiling, "I got it handled, so relax. And they're locked in with us for the next five years.""How did you do it?" Charles asked absently."You'll find out." Susie winked at him.Charles did not press her and changed the subject. "It isn't safe for you at the estate now. I'm busy, and I can't get free to protect you, so I'll have someone find you a house out in the country. You'll be safer there."Susie's hand stopped in midair. When she raised her eyes again, she said, "All right. I'll come back once Bruno is gone."Charles d
