Elena

I stood up from the bed and walked slowly toward the floor-length mirror in the corner of my master bedroom. I turned around, checking my reflection from every angle in disbelief.

My skin was radiant, smooth, and full of life—not the gray, sunken, hollow mess I had died with in that hospital bed.

I gently cupped my cheeks, admiring the face I had once taken for granted. I was never the type of woman who stared at herself in the mirror, but today, seeing my healthy self again felt like a miracle.

I glanced back down at the phone still clutched in my hand, my thumb swiping the screen awake to check the time.

1:58 p.m.

I knew what today was. Today was the day my mother-in-law was scheduled to barge into my bedroom, sobbing fake tears to announce that her son had “died” in a tragic car accident. It was nearly 2:00 p.m., and by 2:30 p.m., the curtain on their grand lie would rise.

Barely thirty minutes. Thirty minutes to steady myself, to think, to prepare for the performance of my life before the first act even began.

Before I dealt with them, I had a far more urgent priority: I needed to verify whether the poison was already running through my veins.

I threw on a crisp dress, grabbed my handbag, and marched toward the driveway where my luxury sedan should have been parked, only to stare at the empty pavement. I had forgotten. I had already given Adrian my car to “sell” when he claimed his company was on the brink of bankruptcy.

Soon, he would fake his own death in a staged accident, using the proceeds from selling my car and the loan he’d taken out under my name—my stolen identity, my signature forged—to disappear and start a new life with Vivian, who was already carrying his child.

Was I really this much of a fool in my past life? Handing over my car, letting Adrian’s name sit on the deed, never once thinking to read the fine print of anything I signed.

Not this time, I swore to myself. I will tear their dream life apart piece by piece.

I pulled my phone from my bag and dialed a number I hadn’t called in years—the best friend Adrian had manipulated me into cutting off.

The call connected. “Who is this?” a guardedly cold voice asked.

I swallowed the lump in my throat, letting out a soft sigh. “I’m so sorry, Roxy.”

Silence stretched over the line before she scoffed. “You’re sorry?”

Roxy was the only person who had stood by me when the rest of the world turned its back on me in my past life. Even after I pushed her away, she was the one who helped me find work to pay off the debt faster. In this second chance at life, I was going to fix every single mistake I had made—starting with her.

“Yes,” I whispered. “Please... forgive me, Roxy.”

“Where are you right now?” she demanded, the sharpness in her voice instantly softening into concern.

“I’m standing outside my house,” I said. “Are you free to pick me up?”

“Don’t move. I’m on my way.”

I stood by the gates, waiting. Within fifteen minutes, a sleek red hatchback pulled up to the curb, screeching to a halt right in front of me.

“Hop in,” Roxy called out, unlocking the passenger door.

I opened the door and slid into the leather seat.

She turned to stare at me, her eyebrows furrowed. “Alright, what is going on with you?”

“Nothing,” I murmured, leaning over to look at her. “I just missed you.”

Roxy rolled her eyes dramatically. “Do you honestly expect me to buy that after years of ghosting me?”

“I know I was an idiot for listening to that bastard,” I confessed softly.

SCREECH!

Roxy slammed her foot on the brakes so hard the tires squealed against the pavement, nearly sending us both through the windshield. She threw her car into park and immediately pressed the back of her hand against my forehead.

“Okay, your body temperature is normal, but I think your brain has finally rotted—”

“Say no more,” I cut in, grabbing her hand and holding it tight. “The Elena who was an easily manipulated fool is dead. The Elena sitting next to you right now is wide awake. I am so, so sorry for everything, Roxy. I was a complete idiot for believing Adrian’s cheap lie that you were just jealous of my marriage.”

Roxy stared at me as if I had suddenly started speaking an alien language. I pouted, exaggerating a cute, pleading expression I hadn’t used since our college days.

Without saying another word, Roxy let out a loud sigh, pulled me into a fierce, bone-crushing hug, and buried her face in my shoulder.

“You know I can never stay mad at you when you act like a pitiful puppy,” she grumbled into my hair, holding me tight.

I hugged her back just as hard, letting the warmth of a real friend wash over my soul.

“Let’s go to my apartment,” Roxy suggested, pulling back and starting the engine again.

“Before that... take me to the central hospital,” I requested softly.

Roxy froze, her hands tightening on the steering wheel. “What?! Are you sick? What hurts?” She began frantically examining my arms and face.

“Nothing hurts right now,” I assured her. “I just need to run a quick test.”

Without pushing me for details she knew I wasn’t ready to give, Roxy nodded, put the car in drive, and sped off toward the medical center.

Minutes later, we stepped into the bright, sterile lobby of the hospital. Roxy stood right beside me, her eyes wide with shock as I walked up to the reception desk and addressed the nurse on duty.

“I need a blood draw done immediately,” I said. “A toxicology screen—heavy metals and common poisons—and a full hormone panel. Tell whoever reads it I want anything abnormal flagged and rushed, whatever that costs.”

The nurse studied me for a moment before nodding and handing me the intake forms. “We can run a rapid toxin screen today—that part’s fast. The hormone panel usually goes out to an outside lab, so that one will take a couple of days. But if anything on it comes back critical, we can flag it for an expedited read.”

“That’s fine,” I said. “Just make sure it’s flagged.”

A phlebotomist drew several vials of my blood and asked us to wait in the private lounge.

We sat side by side on the vinyl chairs in total silence. Roxy read the heavy aura surrounding me, breaking the quiet with a gentle voice.

“You’ve changed, Elena,” she whispered, reaching out to squeeze my hand. “I won’t force you to tell me what happened... but whatever war you’re fighting, I’m standing right beside you.”

Tears blurred my vision as I looked at her. Roxy.

We wrapped our arms around each other in a silent pact. Just as I pulled back, the harsh, buzzing ringtone of my phone blasted from inside my handbag.

I pulled it out and looked at the flashing screen. I didn’t even need to check the caller ID to know who it was.

2:30 p.m.

My mother-in-law was calling. The game was on.

ElenaI woke up feeling completely refreshed.Months had passed since that fateful day of retribution, and my new life had officially begun. I got out of bed, took a warm bath, and dressed in a sharp, tailored suit fitting for the Chairwoman I now was. As I picked up my handbag, my phone screen lit up with a notification:【Good morning! How are you feeling today?】I smiled warmly as I read Roxy’s text. Ever since everything went down, she had made sure to send me a message like this every single morning.【I’m doing wonderful, thank you. Have a great day!】 I typed back before slipping my phone into my purse.I walked down the grand marble staircase, where my new housekeeper greeted me with a polite bow.“Good morning, Chairwoman. Your breakfast is prepared.”“Thank you,” I replied, enjoying a quick, quiet meal before stepping out to my car.It was my original luxury car—the one Adrian thought he had hidden away in his friend’s garage. Kane made sure every single piece of property stole

Elena“I’m sorry! Elena, I’m so sorry!” Adrian suddenly sobbed, reaching out to grab the hem of my dress. He pointed a trembling, bloody finger at Vivian. “It was her! That bitch forced me into this! You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved!”I stared at him with complete disdain. That wasn’t what he said when he stood over my deathbed.“How dare you, Adrian?!” Vivian shrieked, snapping her head toward him. “You were the one who crawled back to me after I divorced my ex! You begged me to take you back! You told me you hated Elena and wanted her dead! You planned all of this, and now you’re blaming me?!”I stood back with my arms crossed, watching the two lovers tear each other to shreds.Idiots.“Lucas!” I called out suddenly. The entire room froze. Adrian, Eleanor, and Vivian all whipped their heads toward the front entrance in panic. After a long silence, I let out a soft laugh. “Oh. He’s not coming. I was the one who handed the evidence to the police and put him behind bars.”Eleanor

Elena“What do you mean?” Adrian stammered from the floor. “Why are you sitting next to him? Get up!”I tilted my head back and laughed. It started as a soft chuckle, then burst into full, hysterical laughter until tears welled in the corners of my eyes. I clutched my stomach, savoring every second of their complete bewilderment.“What the hell is so funny?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking. “You bitch!”My laughter died instantly. I turned a gaze colder than ice onto her. “Bitch? You’re referring to yourself, right?”“How dare you!” she screamed, taking a step back.“Mother,” I called out, my tone dripping with bitter irony. “Didn’t you tell me Vivian was just your distant cousin? How on earth did she end up as Adrian’s mistress?”“I am not a mistress!” Vivian cut in sharply, clutching Adrian’s arm. “I am his wife!”“Then what does that make me?” I asked smoothly.“The unloved one is always the mistress,” she spat back.“I suppose you’re right,” I said casually, inspecting my fin

ElenaBefore Adrian could take another step toward the door, the front entrance was kicked open with a deafening crash.Kane strolled into the foyer, flanked by a dozen burly men armed with iron bars and handguns. The shock on Adrian’s face was pure poetry.“Well, well,” Kane’s low voice echoed off the high ceilings. “Isn’t that Adrian Blackwood? I thought dead men were supposed to stay buried.”Adrian froze, his face draining of color as he instinctively shoved Vivian behind his back. “M-Mr. Kane...”From the shadows near the stairs, a surge of dark triumph rushed through me. Roxy hadn’t failed me after all—she had sent Kane directly to the house to intercept Adrian before he could flee!My phone vibrated silently in my palm. A text from Roxy appeared:【Sorry to keep you waiting! My dad had a sudden emergency, but Kane and his men should be arriving right now. Is he there?】I quickly typed back:【Yes. He just walked in. Thank you for everything—I’ll take it from here.】“Why are you h

Elena“Mother,” Vivian said nervously. “What are you talking about?”Eleanor snapped her head around, glaring at Vivian with cold, vicious hatred. It was the first time Eleanor had ever looked at her like that, and Vivian instinctively took a step back.“Don’t you dare call me mother!” Eleanor hissed. “My son is sitting in a prison cell, and you think I’m going to let you and Adrian live happily ever after?”“I am so sick of this!” Adrian shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. He ripped off his cap and ran a hand through his hair—a habit he always had when he was pushed to the edge.“I told you last time!” Adrian yelled, glaring at Eleanor. “I gave you money to pay off his mess before. I told you if he screwed up again, I wouldn’t lift a finger to help him! You dragged me back here because of that useless loser!”“That ‘loser’ is your brother!” Eleanor cried, her voice cracking. “Your younger brother!”“So what? I can’t do anything for him!” Adrian snapped. “He was caught red-hand

ElenaI sat by my bedroom window long past midnight, watching the driveway for headlights that never came. Adrian didn’t return that night.By the time exhaustion finally dragged me into a shallow, restless sleep, the sky had begun turning gray. I woke a few hours later to the smell of toasted bread and fresh tea drifting up through my door.I dressed slowly and made my way downstairs. Eleanor was waiting at the bottom of the staircase, an apron tied neatly around her waist, a warm smile plastered across her face as if the night before had never happened.“There you are, sweet girl,” she cooed, taking my hands in hers. “I made you breakfast. Come, sit.”She guided me to the table, where a full spread waited—eggs, fresh bread, fruit, a steaming cup of tea.She pulled out my chair herself, fussing over the placement of my napkin like a woman auditioning for the role of a doting mother.“Mother,” I said carefully, sitting down. “Is everything alright?”“I owe you an apology,” she said, l
