"Get the fuck out of my wedding, Rainer." One sentence. Every lie Jose built his life on, suddenly visible. Camille gave him everything his past never could. Stability. A future. The kind of love that doesn't ask questions. But on the night he finally chose her, his foster brother stood up in the back of the church and called her a murderer. And the grave they buried their youngest brother in three years ago? Empty. Elias isn't dead. He's been hiding. And he came back angrier than any of them are ready for. Now Jose is caught between the wife who built him a life and the brother who reminds him who he was before he let her. Between the story he chose and the truth he buried. Some loves don't save you. They just make sure you can never find your way back to what you were before them.

Chapter 1

You Buried An Empty Box

"Get the fuck out of my wedding, Rainer."

The words ripped out of Jose before the priest finished. Guests froze. Phones rose like vultures. Camille's hand went rigid in his, nails biting into his palm.

Rainer stood at the back in a wrecked suit, eyes burning straight through him. Security rushed in. Rainer let them grab his arms but he didn't look away.

"You're marrying the woman who killed our brother," Rainer said. Loud enough for the front rows.

Whispers exploded. A cousin dropped her bouquet. Jose's face went hot.

He stormed down the aisle, shoes crushing petals. "You piece of shit. You always do this. Always have to drag everything into the mud the second I get something clean."

Rainer smiled with his teeth. "Clean? You buried an empty box, Jose. She made sure of it."

Security hauled him toward the doors. Rainer kept talking even as they dragged him out. "Ask her about the pills. Ask her why the grave dirt looked fresh last week."

Jose stood there tasting metal. The priest cleared his throat. Camille stepped up beside him, calm as marble, and slipped her arm through his.

"Let's finish this," she whispered. "He's just jealous. Like always."

They cut the cake with everyone pretending nothing happened. Jose smiled until his cheeks ached. He laughed at toasts. He fed Camille a piece of vanilla cake while cameras flashed, but his mind kept replaying Rainer's face. That smile. All teeth and certainty.

In the private tent Camille closed the flap and turned on him.

"You let him get to you," she said, voice sweet but eyes sharp. "After everything I've done to pull you out of that mess."

Jose poured whiskey. His hand wasn't quite steady. "This isn't about him."

"No?" She stepped closer, ran her fingers down the front of his chest. "Then why are you half-hard thinking about him right now?"

He grabbed her waist and pulled her in rough. "Shut up."

She laughed softly against his mouth. "There you go. Using me to forget them again. It's okay, baby. I don't mind."

He kissed her hard, almost mean, shoved her dress up. She wrapped her legs around him willingly. He fucked her against the table edge, fast and selfish, eyes shut. Halfway through, a memory hit him without warning: Elias burning grilled cheese at three in the morning, laughing like an idiot while smoke swallowed the foster kitchen. Rainer sleeping on the floor next to Jose's bed for three nights straight during one of Elias's bad withdrawals, refusing to leave even when Jose told him to.

Jose came with a grunt, face buried in Camille's neck. She held him tight and stroked his hair like he was hers to fix.

"I love you," she murmured. "The version that wants to live. Not the one that wants to drown with them."

Jose didn't answer. He just breathed her in and hated how safe it felt.

In the honeymoon suite Camille fell asleep fast, leg thrown over him, one hand resting open on her stomach. Jose lay awake staring at the ceiling.

He slipped out of bed and checked his phone in the bathroom.

One message from an unknown number. A photo of Elias's grave at night, dirt freshly turned. Then another, right behind it.

Camille's old number.

I did what you were too weak to do.

Jose's stomach dropped through the floor. He wanted to throw the phone. He wanted to crawl back into bed and fuck Camille again until his brain went quiet. He wanted to drive to the cemetery right now and dig until he knew for certain.

Instead he stood there gripping the counter, breathing.

His wife slept peacefully in the next room. The woman who had given him the first real peace he'd ever known. The same woman who might have emptied his brother's grave.

Jose looked at his own reflection and felt something ugly shift in his chest. Part of him didn't care. Part of him just wanted to keep the life he'd built no matter what crawled out from under it.

He deleted the messages. Then emptied the trash folder too.
