Selene’s POV

I jostled awake to a cold liquid pouring down on my face. I panted, my body going into a frenzy. A lot of scents wafted through my nostrils but the moment I caught a whiff of cinnamon again, the memories of all that happened before I passed out came in like a tidal wave.

I sat up, feeling a lot of eyes on me. And just as I did that, a new bottle of water was dumped on me.

What the fuck?

“Don’t manhandle her!” I heard Liam say, and a part of me calmed down on knowing that he was right beside me and that he could talk too. That only meant that he was fine, at least.

“Liam…” I trailed off and I felt him come closer to me, “What’s going on?” I asked.

“Are you fine? I was so worried about you when you passed out earlier.” He changed the topic.

“I’m okay. What’s going on?”

The whispers around us never stopped, instead they increased. I overheard someone asking another person if we were mates.

I really didn’t want to believe that I was in the pack I thought we were in. But they were the only ones who had cinnam—

It just wasn’t possible that we had wandered close enough to their borders. They didn’t even live amongst people, how the heck could Liam have driven over to—

“Alright, let’s begin.” A loud voice boomed, commanding silence in the clearing or wherever we were. Liam still hadn’t said anything.

I inched closer to where I sensed Liam was. We were on the bare ground, and it was so rough that pain coursed through my legs the moment I moved them. I hadn’t even felt the metal chains on my legs till they rattled with the movement.

We were chained up too?

“Liam, who are these people? Please tell me we’re in Silvercrest.” I asked in a pleading voice, holding onto that wish with every single breath left in me.

“I’m sorry.” Was all that he said.

The loud voice from earlier came on again, “Where were you two coming from?”

“Moonbound. I said that already.” Liam responded through gritted teeth.

“Explain how you found yourselves on the borders of the Lycan pack?”

My heart stopped, and even the world seemed to go still as the words registered in my mind.

I was right all along. We were in the Lycan pack.

Fear coursed through me and I knew we needed to get out of here as soon as possible. I shouldn’t ever be seen here or around the pack.

They’d even betray you if you gave them your trust. They hold only themselves in high esteem. And their King? He was said to be a wolf’s worst nightmare if you ever crossed paths with him.

“We were being chased by those rogues, and in a bid to lose them, I took a sharp turn at a road I didn’t know. I had no idea that it was the direction of the Lycan pack.” Liam responded calmly but I couldn’t miss the tinge of panic in his voice.

Silence enveloped us for a moment and I wondered why no one said anything till a different voice spoke again.

“I don’t think I believe them. Their appearance at the border wasn’t a coincidence.”

“Exactly, why would they suddenly appear here on a day that the King wasn’t around? They must have known that he’d kill them on the spot if he had seen that they were with rogues.”

What the heck?

I spoke up, “That’s not true. We don’t even know your King or this pack.” I turned my head around even though I couldn’t see them, “We weren’t even armed! Just let us go already, we were on our way to a different pack.”

The man with the gruff voice from earlier boomed again, “You both are spies and in extension, a threat to this pack.”

I gritted, biting my lips angrily. Can these people just fucking let us go!

“You’ll be punished severely, but for a start—” He was cut off by a very loud voice.

“The King is here!” Thumping of footsteps followed as people seemed to assume their normal position, “All bow to his Majesty!”

My breath caught in my throat as I heard them all drop to their knees, but I was still. I couldn’t even bring myself to move at all. A teeny tiny bit of me wished I could see what the King looked like, even though that shouldn’t bother me.

I heard his footsteps, though slow and almost unnoticeable. But I still picked it up. I didn’t know his name, but I’ve heard of him in stories that I was certain I knew more about him than anyone else.

And for some reason, I used to feel like I knew him more than in the books. Or that I was meant to know him.

“All rise.”

My heart skipped a beat at the sound of his voice. And suddenly, he seemed to be moving in my direction.

I sat straighter than before and Liam also stiffened beside me.

His cinnamon scent was way stronger than the one I had smelt on anyone here. He kept coming closer and the scent only got stronger, travelling deep to all of my senses including my skin which was my sense of touch.

He didn’t touch me, yet my skin got hot and itchy. I hated that scent so much, and I even hated it more because it seemed to have annulled every other scent I had gotten used to, including mine!

I stiffened when I sensed him stop before me, his eyes intent on me. The hairs on my nape rose completely, and my wolf pranced around in my head like never before. I could barely even deduce if it was out of fear or excitement. Her emotions were just everywhere.

“Unchain them.”

His voice…. It sent deep shivers down my spine and I found myself swallowing thickly.

Two words, that was all he said and his warriors were fiddling with my chain and Liam’s.

I could feel his hard gaze on me and that same chill from earlier returned, but thicker this time around. I exhaled slightly, trying to calm my nerves.

Before I could tell what was happening, his soft fingers touched my jaw gently, raising my head a few inches up.

“Something isn’t right…” He trailed off, and Liam cut in before I did.

“She can’t see.”

The King’s thumb was a bit warm on my skin, and for someone who hated being touched without her permission, I seemed to like that warmth because it calmed my nerves a bit.

“Oh, I see. What’s your name?” He asked, his voice patient.

“Selene.”

“What were you both doing at my pack’s border?”

“We had no idea we were at your border. We were being chased and attacked by some group of rogues.” I repeated what Liam had said earlier.

Thick nerve-wracking silence reigned for a few minutes before he stepped back, his thumb leaving my jaw at the same time.

“One month.” He finally said, and my lips edged up in a frown. “You both will be in this pack and under strict supervision for one month before I decide to have your heads or not.”

Oh.

“And if anyone or even I sense anything funny from either of you…” An icy silence followed, no one seemed to be breathing even.

“You’ll beg for death but won’t get such niceness from me.”

Lucian’s POVSIX YEARS LATER“Dada! The sun is out!”I was deeply asleep, the kind of sleep that had become normal over the years because I haven’t had to worry about a long-lasting problem like Vera or Axel. Other than the rare attacks of stray rogues, we haven’t had any critical problems. The thirty-five pounds of my four-year-old daughter landed on my back just like I expected and she balanced her weight there.“Kimberly. Good morning to you too.” I said with a sleepy voice.“Come, let’s go. Mom wants to give us food. She made pasta!” She yelled and at that, I got up and sat in a way that she was sitting on my lap.“Pasta?” I repeated after her she nodded her very small head.I gently placed her on the bed and went to do my morning routine quickly then went downstairs with her sitting on my neck, her hands splayed across my head.Only goodness knows where Selene got the recipe for the pasta she makes. It has been the best I have ever tasted. But sometime last month, I went against

Azriel’s POVI should have left the kingdom since the moment Selene got back, because a part of me knew that Axel might have told them at the verge of death. He’s the only one who knows the truth, and I didn't even know how he got to find out.“The observers” is a very secret organization that a whole lot of people don’t know about. The day he called me aside to tell me that he knew, I was more than shocked. And he didn’t call me for any reason, it was that he wanted me to spy on Selene and, by extension, the king.I declare because I was already getting struck enough with the guilt of knowing that I didn’t come into Selene’s life as a friend but a spy. Though I forgot my primary obligation at some point and really did become friends with her, the fact remained that she mustn’t know that I was a spy.And of course, Axel wasn’t very happy with my refusal, he threatened to rat me out to the king. The threat was very scary because I knew that he’d have evidence to back up the claims but

Selene’s POVI was discharged in the morning and Lucian negotiated the discharge paperwork that was handed over to us. He spoke to the healer, the healer’s supervisor, and the supervisor’s supervisor, all because he wanted to be sure that I wasn’t being released prematurely.I watched everything unfold from the bed where I was still sitting because he ordered me not to move. I barely have any more injuries on me anymore but I still have bandages all over me. I was too tired and sore in the chest to argue with him this morning. He finally came back to me and just like I predicted, he didn’t allow my legs to touch the floor at all. I also didn’t argue with him, and even when we got into the car and saw that he had a driver there so we could sit side by side and he’d hold my hands in both of his.I was so certain that if he had the chance, he’d cradle me on his lap.“I’m fine, Lucian. I’m really not going to die if you look away from me for a second.”“You were struck in the chest and at

Lucian’s POVThe nearest medical facility with enough equipment to handle dark magic and the kind of injury that Selene sustained was on the neutral grounds amd it was three minutes away from where we were. I had never wished that I knew medicine like I did at that moment.I carried her, half Kairos and half my own form. I could barely see through the tension rising in me, nor could I hear her heartbeat well over my racing one.I didn’t wait to use a car, Kairos was two times faster than any car we’d find. So, we cut down the three minutes to one minute and thirty seconds. When we got to the hospital and I was told to place her on a stretcher, I refused. “Where’s the room she’ll be taken to?” I asked them, knowing they’d be so slow that Kairos might fully shift right there in that hallway. They seemed to understand what was going on and really pointed me to the room that they intended to put her in. I dropped her there and only then did I look up to look around the room and it was to

Selene’s POVHe looked at Vera on the ground and the look on his face wasn’t one that I was familiar with.No one answered the question he just asked, we were all just staring at Vera’s body on the ground. More black blood pooled out of her body.I looked back at Axel and saw that he didn’t even look like what he was when he was the council head, nor did he look like he looked when he sat across from me and Lucian and confessed to being willing enough to assist with taking down Vera.He looked like a man who was consumed by guilt instead. The real and unmanaged kind of grief that didn’t care if anyone was watching.“What have you done?!” He yelled.I straightened and stood up properly, “She’s dead, Axel.” I said, still trying to figure out why he looked like he had just been told very bad news.He looked up from Vera to me and the expression on his face was no longer grief but… anger.“You killed her.” He said in an accusing tone.“She would have killed everyone in this room,” I said

Lucian’s POVShe rose up and the feeling of familiarity struck me hard. I had surely seen her before. That, I was sure of.Vera’s eyes moved from mine, going past mine to Selene who was a bit beside and behind me. She had just the exact hatred of a woman who has spent thirty years hating another person and has just gotten the opportunity to come face to face with them.“And you…” she trailed off, pointing at Selene. “You who walked in and took everything that was meant to be—”I cut her off and shook my head, “This ends tonight.”She did not come at me quietly. I swiftly moved Selene behind me while Vera stretched out her hand and moved with the speed of someone who has been using dark magic as their supplement for years, one that wasn’t in any way similar to natural speed but rather the one that seemed borrowed and was burning hard. The same vessel that she used on Selene — the dark magic — was pointed at my warriors and two of them flew across the room, hitting the wall. Selene yelp

Selene’s POV I ran as fast as I could but the footsteps only got closer. Panic bubbled up in me, and the air around me seemed to get thinner. I needed a way out. Selene’s POV I woke up to a very soft surface, one softer than the one in the infirmary which I had fallen asleep on earlier. “Liam?” I called out, hoping he was close by at least. Lucian’s POV I turned around immediately after making that statement, afraid that my beast would burst out of my skin if I didn’t step away from Selene.
