Chapter 2

Autor: Paper Relic
Tony slung a sympathetic arm around Kevin's shoulders and spoke up on his behalf.

"Kevin's sacrificed so much for you. Can't you just come clean with that cripple, Clark, and run away with Kevin for good?"

Autumn froze for a moment. She had a complicated look on her face, but I couldn't tell if she was sad or something else. She closed her eyes for a moment.

"Clark saved my life. For as long as I live, he's my responsibility."

Watching her look so torn, I found myself recalling the past.

Autumn was someone I'd taken in. Winters in the north were bitterly cold. After both her parents remarried and went their separate ways, the young Autumn was left homeless.

And all she could do was curl up under the eaves of my family's house just to keep out of the wind.

Being abandoned at such a young age taught her just how cruel people could be. As she sat there holding the bowl of pasta I handed her, she was silent for a long while before asking what I wanted in return.

My house was big, but it was rather empty. I didn't want repayment. I just wanted someone to play with.

From then on, I had a shadow by my side that never left me. Over the course of ten years, from the age of eight to eighteen, she grew more beautiful with each passing year.

Yet when she confessed her feelings to me, she was still so shy and insecure that her cheeks turned bright red before she finally managed to choke out the words, "I like you."

After we got together, she'd come up with all kinds of different dishes because she knew I had a sensitive stomach.

If I woke up with a stomachache in the middle of the night, she'd instinctively jump out of bed to get me some water and my medicine.

At first, Kevin couldn't stand her. He said she wasn't good enough for me, and that all she had to offer were these worthless acts of kindness.

Whenever Kevin went after her, Autumn always fired right back. The two of them were often at each other's throats.

I tried to play peacemaker, but eventually I could only conclude that they were both just too protective of me.

After all, one was the good friend who had protected me since we were kids, and the other was the woman who had always put me first.

That was, until Kevin pissed off the wrong people and got cornered by a group of street thugs in an alley.

Autumn, who was usually calm and composed, knocked over tables and chairs in her haste to run out the door. She didn't even look back the entire time.

By the time I got there, those lust-crazed thugs had Autumn pinned against a wall.

But instead of worrying about herself, she just told Kevin to run with tears in her eyes.

Back then, there was no time to question why Autumn was acting so strangely. I rushed over to protect her, only to get shoved into the road during the fight and end up in an accident.

The accident practically destroyed both my legs. Autumn knelt before my parents, whose hair had gone white in what seemed like no time at all, and swore she would take care of me for the rest of her days, or may heaven strike her down where she stood.

Kevin gripped my hand tight and promised he'd stay by my side until I could stand again.

The day I got my prosthetic legs, the two of them went red-eyed at the exact same moment. Back then, I thought they were crying because they felt sorry for me.

But looking back now, they were mourning the love between them that could never see the light of day.

Kevin's voice dragged me out of my thoughts. "Autumn, aren't we being too unfair to Clark?"

But everyone crowded around him, falling over themselves to comfort him. "This isn't your fault. Clark is the one who dragged you both down.

"If he weren't so narrow-minded, we wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble just to keep him from getting upset."

Autumn said nothing. She simply leaned gently into Kevin's arms. A crushing pain gripped my heart, leaving me struggling to catch my breath.

With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and typed out a text. "You once said that if in the future you ever betrayed me, I could ask you for a grand favor. Does that promise still stand?"

The reply came almost instantly. "Of course."

I stared at those two words and slowly unclenched my fist. Then I stepped out and spoke in a hoarse voice. "Then tell me—whose fault is it?"

The call connected, but for a long while, there was nothing but silence on the other end.The moment I realized it might be Autumn, I immediately tried to end the call. But before I could, her hoarse voice came through the phone."Clark, I suddenly have another set of memories in my head. You went back to the past and changed our future, didn't you?"She choked back a sob. "If you already knew the future, why didn't you stop me? If I'd just never run out of that classroom, if I'd just never gone to Kevin, maybe this time, we would've had a happy ending."There was no point pretending I didn't know anything anymore just to dodge her questions. So, I stayed silent for a moment before finally speaking."I already tried that path back then, when I caught you and Kevin in bed together. Don't you remember the answer you gave me in the end?"Before she could say anything else, I hung up. But Autumn was more persistent than I'd expected. The next day, at my celebration party, she appear

Clark's POVEven after I'd settled into the car, I was still wiping at my wrist.Dawn Hale saw what I was doing but didn't say anything about it. She simply took a sterilized towel from the car's climate-controlled compartment and gently wiped my wrist. The towel was warm against my skin, and somehow, that warmth seemed to reach all the way into my heart. "Aren't you going to ask who she was?"Dawn just smiled and gently kissed my cheek. "Rather than worrying about that unimportant person, I'd much rather my dear husband take better care of himself while he's busy working toward his goals."As I pulled her into my arms, I couldn't help but chuckle. Yet when I lowered my gaze, Autumn's words once again echoed in my mind. "Do you really not remember everything we went through together?"I hadn't answered, not because I didn't remember, but because I remembered everything far too clearly.I remembered exactly how she and Kevin had betrayed me, and how they drove my parents and me i

The space around Autumn crumbled apart slowly, then rapidly snapped back together. The spacious penthouse transformed into a cramped, suffocating basement. A greasy, grime-covered photo of her and Kevin hung on the brick wall.Though it was supposed to be a wedding photo, it looked more like a random snapshot of the two of them together.Even the smiles in the photo looked painfully forced. Kevin, who had been sprawled helplessly on the floor a moment ago, now had his own face back.He looked down at the wrinkled tank top he was wearing and suddenly shouted, "What the hell is going on?"Autumn was stunned by the unbelievable change as well. She immediately looked down at the phone in her hand. But no matter how far she scrolled, the text from before was nowhere to be found, as if the whole thing had been nothing but a hallucination.Yet at some point, her perfectly tailored outfit had become a washed-out T-shirt and jeans. Even the ring Clark had once put on her finger was gon

Autumn hesitated for a moment before turning her cold gaze on Kevin. "Is something wrong?"Kevin was taken aback. Ever since he kept Autumn from telling everyone about her relationship with Clark, she had started treating him coldly. He knew she was angry.Just like back when Clark had lost both legs because of the two of them, Autumn had been furious with him back then too. At one point, she had even threatened to leave him and be good to Clark. But when he pretended to be drunk at a bar, she still came running back to him without a second thought. So, this time, he figured, it was only a matter of time before Autumn forgave him. He stepped forward and placed his hands on Autumn's shoulders."Autumn, you have to move on eventually. You can't keep living in the past. Clark cared about us deeply. He wouldn't want to see us spend the rest of our lives hurting over him."At the mention of Clark, Autumn froze. She raised her head to look at the man before her, the man who was using

Third-Person POVThe moment Autumn saw Clark running into the street, she frantically sprinted in his direction. But by then, it was already too late. That slender figure was swallowed up by the oncoming traffic before being brutally sent flying. For a moment, the entire world seemed to come to a standstill. It was June, yet Autumn suddenly felt unbearably cold. It was as though icy wind was pouring straight into her heart, causing her hands to shake. She stiffly walked over to the motionless Clark and nudged him. "Clark, what are you doing?"Her face was white as paper, but she still forced a mocking smile onto her lips. "Are you pulling another stunt to force me to leave Kev?"Autumn ignored the shrill honking around her and the onlookers' whispers. She stubbornly refused to look away, as though she were waiting for him to answer. But the person lying there showed no reaction whatsoever. It was unbearably quiet, so quiet that Autumn could hear her own racing heartbeat.Ever s

Kevin stood there in his pajama shorts, with broken porcelain scattered all around his feet. Standing across from him were my parents.Autumn rushed over, grabbing him and checking him over. "Kev, are you hurt?""Kev?"Mom and Dad exchanged a look. Before they could even ask why Kevin's face had become identical to mine, they noticed the way Kevin and Autumn were holding hands. Their expressions immediately darkened."Autumn, what is the meaning of this?"Autumn was quiet for a moment. Then she gripped Kevin's hand tighter. "It's exactly what you saw and heard."Dad's chest heaved violently, and he nearly collapsed. "Have you lost your mind? How could you do this to Clark?"Mom steadied him, then turned her furious gaze on the two of them.Kevin suddenly dropped to his knees in front of my parents. "Mr. and Mrs. Ballard, this is all my fault. I'm the one who wronged Clark. I'm begging you. Please, just let us be together."Autumn hurriedly pulled him to his feet before turning
