Chapter 12. Answer the damn question

"Are you an imposter?" Officer Simon's shouted loudly.

His voice rang in Ella's ears.

Her eyes grew dark and nostrils flared for a few seconds before she replied calmly," no,sir."

He wasn't worth getting angry over.

" Are we done here?" Ella asked politely.

" Wow. You are really in a hurry to get back to your beautiful jail cell. The smell of roses on a dewy evening and the pink coloured wallpaper, with pink flamingos seems really attractive." Officer Simon's grinned.

Ella rolled her eyes at his sarcasm. He was really starting to annoy her.

"Are you two ready for the results." Mr Luke interrupted.

"Of course. Finally I can prove that she is an imposter and get my promotion." Officer Simon's brushed his auburn hair from his forehead.

If he wasn't such a douche bag Ella would have found him attractive. He was well built with grey eyes and Sparling white teeth. He could easily get a job as a model or actor, but here he was, causing unnecessary trouble for her.

At first Ella thought it was the spell he was under but judging by his recent attitude and remarks, she could tell he was just as cocky as he looked.

" I am sorry officer Simon's but I have to burst your bubble. Her polygraph test is clear. A the questions Miss Woods has answered was true and correct." Mr Luke said in the most professional voice.

" Your machine must be broken. She is an imposter." Officer Simon's banged his fist into the table.

" I am afraid not. This is a brand new machine. Top of the range." Mr Luke winked at Ella and she smiled.

" So this means you have no reason to keep me here." Ella said sternly. She was relieved that her father intervened. She just hoped that he left no trail to come back and bite them.

"Mr Luke. Please do the test again. Same questions. We will see if there is a different outcome." Officer Simon's suggested. He was adamant on finding the truth.

"Why bother? If Mr Luke has just said he has the best machine and it's new, why question his knowledge. Are you trying to say he is a liar?" Ella decided to turn the table on officer Simon's. She wanted him to be in the hot seat now.

"No. I am not questioning his results. I am merely asking for a new test. A second opinion." Officer Simon's stuttered. It seemed as if he wasn't comfortable when put into a sticky situation.

" I guess not." Ella said," or you are just so desperate for a promotion,you will do anything at anyone's expense!"

"Are you questioning my field of expertise?" Mr Luke raised an eyebrow.

"No, sir." I trust your opinion.

"So I guess we won't be doing a second test." Mr Luke questioned. He was secretly enjoying playing detective.

"I still want a second test." Officer Simon's insisted.

" What a waste of time." Ella clicked her tongue. She just wanted to go back to her comfortable bed, eat her delicious food and relax. She needed to rethink her plan. This was getting risky. She didn't expect such complications.

" Time that you have. You will rot in that jail cell until I get the truth." Officer Simon's gritted his pearly white teeth. His frustration was starting to show.

"Fine." Ella gave him the stink eye.

"Shall we begin." Mr Luke asked." If you two are done arguing. The machine is already set up. Thank God I didn't pack up to leave."

Mr Luke started with the same questions and then officer Luke followed.

" The results are in. As per previous test which was minutes ago, the results remain the same. Miss Woods has provided her answers truthfully." Mr Luke smiled.

" How do you do the same thing all over again and expect different results. You really are a special case." Ella spat out.

" There must be something wrong. Maybe a new set of questions." Officer Simon's looked at Mr Luke." It was her suggestion. How can I possible expect different results when the input is the same."

"Go for it." Ella looked at officer Simon's dead in the eyes. She wasn't afraid of him and she wanted him to know that.

" Alright then, let us begin for the third time!" Mr Luke said as he calibrated the machine.

"Are you Ella Woods?" Mr Luke asked Ella.

"Yes." Ella replied.

"Are you eighteen years old?" Mr Luke asked.

"Yes." Ella yawned." Are you for real. I am tired and I want to go back to my hotel."

" You will go when I am done with you. The sooner you tell us the truth the faster we can start solve the mystery." Officer Simon's cleared his throat.

" You may proceed. , Officer Simon's " Mr Luke looked at the graph.

" Are you Miss Ella Woods?" Officer Simon's asked .

" Seriously. " Ella replied.

"Just answer the damn question." Officer Simon's barked.

"Yes." Ella replied coldly.

" Are you an only child?" Officer Simon's questioned.

" How is this relevant?" Ella answered his question with a question. She knew this would annoy him.

" Answer the damn question Summer." Officer Simon's shouted.

Ella ignored him.

"Fine. Ella. Please answer the god damn question." Officer Simon's said unapologetically.

" What was the question again?" Ella asked.

" Are you an only child?" Officer Simon's repeated himself.

" Yes. To my knowledge!" Ella replied.

" Do you know Summer Ray?"
