Nita’s P.O.V.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered, fingers pressing against her lap. “I like you.”

Nita’s gaze dropped to his hand. A bitter laugh almost slipped from her throat. Five years ago, she had sworn off men. Sworn off heartache. Sworn off every distraction that could take her attention away from Nate.

She didn’t need a man in her life. And if she ever did… it would never be someone like Sam Moore.

“I know you must be desperate,” Sam went on, his tone smug. “Why else would you take this job when everyone else is leaving? Nicro is crumbling. The smart ones are already jumping ship.”

His voice droned, but she wasn’t listening anymore. Her eyes remained on him, cold and sharp.

“You know what?” he leaned closer, lowering his voice to a whisper. “If it’s money you need, I have more than enough. I can make your life here bearable… or unbearable. Depends on how badly you want to keep this job.”

Her lips curved into a slow smirk. “Are you sure?”

He nodded, arrogance lighting his features. “I’m Sam Moore. One of the most important men in this company. You’d be wise to choose carefully.”

His hand slid higher, dangerous in its intent—

Nita’s grip shot out, her fingers wrapping tightly around his wrist. With one twist, she bent it back against his own lap. His smirk faltered.

“If I were you,” she said softly, her voice like ice, “I wouldn’t push my luck.”

Sam drew back with a laugh, though the flicker of pain in his eyes betrayed him. “That’s how you all are at first. Pretend to resist. Don’t worry. You’ll come back.”

Nita simply gave a small nod, dismissing him. She had dealt with men like him before—wolves in tailored suits. He wasn’t worth her anger.

The rest of the day passed uneventfully. She focused on her codes, tuned out the whispers, and when the clock finally gave her freedom, she left early to return to Nate.

---

Driving through the city, Nita kept her eyes on the road—until her instincts prickled. A glance at her rearview mirror confirmed it: a black car trailing her.

Her grip tightened on the steering wheel. Someone’s following me.

Had her identity already been exposed?

She pressed down on the accelerator. The car behind her sped up too, never letting the distance widen.

Her pulse quickened. With a sharp turn, she swerved into a side street, maneuvering quickly to shake the tail. For a brief moment, she thought she’d lost them—

Until the car suddenly overtook her, screeching to a halt directly in her path.

Nita slammed the brakes, heart hammering. Fury replaced fear. She threw her door open and stormed out.

The driver’s door opened.

He stepped out.

Nita froze.

Five years dissolved in a single breath. The world tilted as familiar eyes locked with hers.

“...Nita.”

His voice was exactly as she remembered—low, commanding, threaded with something that made her chest ache.

“Nick.” Her own voice cracked. She cleared her throat quickly, forcing steel into her tone. “What are you doing?”

His brow arched in amusement. “Saying hi to my wife.”

Her frown deepened. “I’m not your wife. Remember? We’re divorced.”

Nick’s lips curled. “If I recall correctly, you never signed the papers. Which means…” His gaze softened, almost teasing. “We’re still legally married.”

She took a bold step closer. Once, she would have trembled in his presence. Once, she would have let his nearness undo her. But that woman was gone.

“Are you here just to remind me of that?” she asked.

Nick studied her, his smile tugging wider. “No. I’m here to claim my wife back.”

Her breath hitched, but she masked it with a scoff. How convenient, after all these years. She let her gaze travel over him despite herself. He was taller, broader, his muscles more defined than before. Time had sharpened him, not dulled him. He was devastatingly handsome—more than he had any right to be.

But she had vowed never to make the same mistake twice.

“That ship sailed a long time ago,” she said firmly. “If you want closure, I’ll sign the divorce papers. Just say the word.”

Nick’s eyes gleamed. “Are you sure? Wouldn’t it be better for us to stay together… as a family?”

Her steps faltered. She turned back to him slowly, suspicion clouding her face. “What do you mean?”

His smile widened, triumphant. “I’m talking about my son.”

The air felt stifling despite the air conditioner blasting cold. Oblivious to whatever was happening; Nate continued eating his food with ease. On the other hand, Nita only stirred her food, making no effort to eat. The same went for the men on the table. They stirred their food but were watching each other. After the whole mall saga, they had ended up in a restaurant to eat when Nate claimed he was hungry and couldn’t wait to get home. Nita was also hungry, so she decided to eat out. She hadn’t expected Jimmy and Nick to follow them, but she hadn’t stopped them from joining. If it were up to her, she would have sent them away, but Nate enjoys their company, leaving her with no other choice but to accept their presence.“Stop it!” Nita said silently but with such force everyone at the table stared. Even Nate stopped eating to check her. “Is something wrong, mommy?” his little voice was full of concern. “Did I do something?” he looked back at his food to see if he had broken one of t

“How come there’s no information on the bastard who sent me that text?” Nick roared at his assistant. Joel stepped back, hoping to avoid whatever his boss might throw next. He had never seen Nick in this kind of mood before – it was shocking. Nick slowly inhaled and exhaled before turning to face him, “Do whatever it takes. I want to know who this person is. I told you before – I want the best on this job.”Joel nodded quickly, “Of course, Sir. I’ll bring positive response.”He scurried out of the office before Nick’s temper exploded any further. Nick watched Joel gently close the door, then sank into his chair. This was the first time Joel had ever delayed delivering on a job – it had never happened before. Joel was the fastest assistant he’d ever had, which was why he’d kept him for so long. If even Joel was struggling to find this person, then whoever they were, they were deeply hidden. He picked up his phone and dialed a number. The call was picked up immediately. “Hello, Nic

It was difficult for Nick to get a good night sleep; the fact that his family was just few rooms away from him, and he couldn’t hold them made him sigh. Normally, he found it hard to sleep, but at that moment, it seemed more difficult to sleep.Instead of trying to sleep, he picked up his laptop. Just then an email dropped in his inbox. Joel had sent every piece of information on Sam Moore. Nick took his time devouring the information. There was nothing special about Sam Moore: he was just like the regular asshole Nick had dealt with in the past. Nita wasn’t the first girl he had tried to deceive, but she was the last he could. If not for the text message he had received, he would have easily thought Sam was just unfortunate. But he knew that wasn’t the case. Someone had murdered Sam intentionally, and it was because of Nita. He closed his laptop running his hand through his hair. Joel was yet to send anything about the person who had sent him the message, which means the person was

“I want the best on this.” Nick’s voice stayed harsh even though he didn’t mean for it to be. He clenched and unclenched his fist. There were hardly things that could get him easily upset, but this did. The idea that someone out there had the audacity to threaten him to stay away from his wife didn’t sit right, What made it worse was the fact that this person had access to his private number. He could count the number of people who had his private number. So, whoever this was. The person was highly informed. He picked his phone to read the text again. STAY AWAY FROM NITA OR YOU’LL END UP LIKE SAM MOORE.He sighed. He knew who Sam Moore was: it was that fool that thought he could blackmail Nita and had ended up getting himself killed. Nick chuckled. Whoever sent this wasn’t just issuing a threat – they were promising death. If the person thought he was powerful enough to kill him, then he had to be one of the best at what he does. “You don’t need to waste resources searching low

“He doesn’t eat carrot.” Nita said, picking out the orange pieces in Nate’s food.Nick chuckled as he opened his own plate. “I don’t eat carrot either.” He showed his food to Nita and she scowled.“I thought vegetables were good for his growth, which was why I asked them to add some to his.”Nita frowned. She had learned too late that Nate was allergic to carrots. She didn’t have allergies, so she had wondered why her son had one – until she was able to learn that he took after his father. That sucked. The last thing she wanted was to acknowledge Nick as his father not to talk of inheriting anything from him.Nick smiled, “I’ll ring one of the maids to bring another meal for him. You don’t have to remove the carrots.” Before she could protest, he was already on the phone. Nita hated how quickly things happened at his command. More than that, she hated that he was making an effort to look good in front of their son. What happened to his carefree attitude? What happened to when he prefe

She hated him. She hated him with all her being. If he thought he could waltz in and out of their lives at his own convenience, then he must be joking. She ignored Nate’s pleading and waited for Jimmy’s message. The moment her phone beeped with an address, she grabbed her suitcase. “Let’s go, Nate.”Nate frowned, “I thought we were staying with Uncle Nick, mummy.” His face fell into that puppy look that had always gotten Nita to do anything for him. But this time, she wouldn’t fall for it - not when Nick was involved.“No! We can’t impose on a stranger, Nate.”Nick stood there, arms crossed, smirking like he had the upper hand, “So, you are just going to run away again. You’re going to run like five years ago.”She stopped, turned towards him and said with clenched teeth, “I’m not running. I’m just doing what I think is right.”Nick nodded, stepping closer. “And that’s avoiding what you are supposed to do?”Their eyes locked, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Nate clea
