Chapter 43: The Promise

Nolan answered the phone immediately, before the first ring could trill all the way through. That was a first.

“Nolan,” I said when he picked up.

Then I realized I didn’t even know where to start.

“I know,” he replied. “I am sorry about the post, but Yena, please let me tell you congratulations first. I am so proud of you.”

“Thanks,” I said, “but seriously, why did you do that?”

“I don’t know. It was an impulse. But I… I don’t regret it.”

“You don’t?” Now I was starting to get irritated.

I was still in the car with Lucy, who could not hide the fact that she was loving life in this instant. She was eating chocolate covered strawberries like it was her job and listening to my phone call on the edge of her seat.

I put it on speakerphone. She could hear most everything anyway.

“What I mean is,” Nolan continued, “you’re more ready for this than you realize. And I can help you, any way you need.”
