The next day, I called Casey to catch her up on everything that had taken place. I couldn’t even believe what I was saying, but Jagger was here and we were going on a date with Keegan and Izzy.

“Oh James, this is a terrible idea. Do you need me there? I could bring Cyman,” she offered.

“Yeah that might be a great idea actually,” I said, “I’ll add you both to the group text.

I felt a lot better knowing my best friend would be there to help keep things in order. I felt like I was going to absolutely die if I saw Keegan hugged up with Izzy.

I got dressed in my cute white and blue Polo dress and white tennis shoes. My tan skin looked so good with white clothing. I hoped that Jagger would like it. Baylen was driving myself, Quinn and Casey to the Jennings house.

The Jennings were the foreign exchange student family every year. Isadora had been with them since our junior year. The Jennings had two kids of their own, but they were in college and in their twenties. They had three children, but lost a son in a car accident five years ago on Homecoming night. His name was Jordan and he was 15. I don’t remember him much, but I have seen several pictures and news coverage on the story. He was two years older than Baylen. There were five teens in the car and three were killed. The two girls that died, went to North Chandler Rhoads. Jenna Pierce was Jordan’s girlfriend and was also 15 years old. Destiny Jeffers was driving and she was 16. It was a tragic story and my mom sent dinners to them weekly for about three months after it happened. She grew up with Mr. Jennings, so she knew them well. She gave us a box of chocolates to take to them today.

When we arrived, the house was being decorated for Christmas by a company called Nola-tides Greetings. Their house was absolutely stunning. Mr. Jennings was a local news production manager, so he was pretty wealthy.

Isadora met us at the service entry to lead us directly to the bowling alley. She had all sorts of bowling type foods. There was pizza, nachos, popcorn, hot pretzels, fries, candy and eight different flavors of cold drinks.

“This looks amazing Izzy,” I said.

“Thank you Brees! You have a special guest waiting by the lanes,” she said, pointing to the bowling area.

Jagger was already here and she looked amazing. She had on baggy jeans and a crop top. Her favorite ball cap donned her head and her hair was in a neat, curled ponytail. She ran over to me as soon as our eyes met.

“Hey there, beautiful. I was worried you had stood me up,” she joked, taking my hand and leading me over to get shoes.

I looked at the neatly laid out shoes. They were in small cubbies and there were five of every size. I grabbed a size seven and went to sit at a table with Jagger so I could change. I slipped my shoes on and before I could tie them, Jagger grabbed my foot and put it on her lap so she could tie my laces.

“You’re so silly Jag! I can tie my own shoes,” I said, giggling at her gesture.

“I know. I just wanted an excuse to touch you,” she said, running her fingers down the back of my calf.

My whole body got chills. She was already trying to win my heart and it was working. Jeff knew about our date today, but I still wanted to consider his feelings. I didn’t want to give her any ideas that she and I were a couple. After she finished tying my shoes she walked me over to get a ball. Casey met us over there as well.

“I haven’t seen Cyman yet, but Keegan just got here,” she said, nodding at the door.

Keegan looked really good. He had on a sweater and dark jeans. He must really like Isadora, I thought to myself. He never dressed nicely for me. Sweats and old shorts were it for him then. I had to be okay with this even though it truly still broke my heart.

“Okay all, I am going to do the partner wheel and that’s who you will partner with for the tournament!” Isadora yelled.

As she was entering our names, Cyman walked in, with Harper. Why was she here? Wasn’t he here as Casey’s date? Casey hadn’t seen them yet and I wanted to prepare her.

“Case, I’m so sorry this is happening,” I started.

I was cut off by her seeing Cyman sitting to put his shoes on. She ran over to sit on his lap and kiss him. She was met with coldness however.

“What the fuck are you doing Casey? Are you drunk?” he asked, pushing her off of his lap.

The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She

Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be

Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee

“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of

I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi

We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
