Se connecter“What? Babe, I’m so confused,” Casey said, with genuine hurt.
“No, what's confusing is you trying to kiss my boyfriend,” Harper shouted, getting in Casey’s face. Casey was taken aback and looked so hurt. I ran over to get between them. I couldn’t believe he brought her. Casey started to cry and I hugged her tightly. “Dude, you can’t make our girl Casey cry. What gives?” Baylen asked, as he and Keegan stepped to Cyman like overprotective big brothers. “The chick clearly is obsessed with me. Did you not see her try to kiss me?” Cyman accused. They turned to look at Casey, who was still crying on my shoulder. “You came for Casey bro. That’s the only reason you were even invited was because of her. You and Harper can leave now,” Keegan said, poking Cyman in the chest with his finger. “Yeah bro, we don’t even hang out with you, so what made you think you could show up with a date and hurt our Case?” Baylen said, doubling down on Keegan’s words. “Why would anyone think he is here for Casey? When Jeff told me he was coming to a bowling party for couples, I assumed it was with me, his girlfriend,” Harper said, looking at Casey. “Well I’m sure you will have a great chat about it on the way home, right Cyman?” I said, pulling Casey over to the tables. Cyman and Harper left, with Harper fuming mad. I was sad for Casey, but also relieved that she could see he was playing her. He never intended on leaving Harper. He was just using Casey. We took a half hour to regroup and I called Jada over to play as Casey’s partner. Her and I kept in touch after Keegan and I started dating. She was one of my best friends now, if you can believe that. Partners were chosen. It was Baylen and Casey, Quinn and Isadora, Jada and Jagger and Keegan was with me. I wasn’t going to let it be a bad experience. I went into the first game with an open mind. We were up against Quinn and Izzy. “Alright Kee, you are up! Don’t let me down!” I shouted, trying to be an enthusiastic partner. He gave me a slightly bewildered glance and then proceeded down the lane. He brought the ball back and then whipped it forward down the lane. The ball smacked the pins right in the middle and sent them soaring in different directions. STRIKE! I high-fived Keegan as I trash talked Quinn. She knocked down 5 pins on her turn, and then 2 more. The game went quickly. I had four strikes already. We ended up winning the first round. We were now up against Baylen and Casey. Isadora and Jagger sat with us to cheer us on. Izzy would give Keegan good luck kisses before each roll. It was time consuming and just too much. I had to stay focused and not concern myself with their relationship. Like, we get it, you and Keegan are a couple, but I digress. This isn’t my concern. The game was neck and neck. We headed into the 10th frame. I went to roll my first ball. It seemed to curve at first, but made its way back to the middle to kiss the pins and earn me a strike. I had two more rolls. If I could get a strike in both rolls we would win. “Ok Brees, you’ve got this. We need these two strikes for the win!” Keegan yelled, through cupped hands. Isadora was sitting on his lap at this point. I wasn’t even phased. We had been getting along again like we had when we were friends. It was nice to be supportive of one another again in some capacity. I threw my second strike and it all came down to this last ball. “You got it girl!” Jagger cheered. “Let’s go James!” Casey squeaked. “Ok Brees!” Jada joined in. It seemed as if the room went completely quiet. You could hear my red and blue shoes squeaking on the shiny wood flooring. I raised the ball in front of me and prepared to throw it in a V formation down the lane. I held my breath and released. It rolled down methodically over the boards—making a swishing noise as it did. It shifted slightly to the right and then hit the pins. They all fell except for one. It bobbled around as if to taunt me. I put my hands over my face in disappointment and turned to face the crowd. Their eyes were all still trained on the pin. I saw Jagger and Quinn’s mouth open and a huge smile on Casey’s face. “Holy shit! It fell! We won!” Keegan yelled. Before I could react, he jumped up, almost knocking Isadora to the floor. He rushed at me and lifted me off of my feet. He held me there for a minute, hugging me, before realizing what he had done. He let me down slowly. His hands slid up my back side unintentionally. I fixed my dress. Keegan and I stood awkwardly after the brief moment of hugging. Then, thankfully, Jagger came over and hugged me as well. “That was amazing to watch Brees! You are such a sick athlete,” she said. Everyone cheered and celebrated our win. I caught Keegan’s stare and he caught mine. There was something about the way he held me that made my heart wonder. Made me think that he possibly could still… no that’s not possible. Why was I doing this to myself? He smiled at me as Isadora hugged him and mouthed the words, “Good job Squirt.” Squirt. That was the first time he had called me that in over a year. Usually I hated that nickname, but this time it was welcomed. This time it felt like home. It felt like it was mending things between us. It felt like we were 9 years old again and chasing one another in my backyard. It felt good. The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She
Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be
Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee
“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of
I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi
We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
