I agreed, forcing a small smile as she headed back downstairs to finish opening gifts with Baylen. I watched her disappear through the doorway before I finally let out the breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

Baylen had gotten her a promise ring.

She had told me earlier, practically glowing with excitement, and apparently he was planning to give it to her today. I could already picture the way she would react when she opened the little box. She deserved that kind of happiness. She deserved someone who was completely sure about her.

My stomach twisted at the thought.

My phone buzzed in my hand.

I glanced down, expecting another notification from the family group chat, but my heart sank when I saw Jagger’s name across the screen.

For a second, I just stared at it.

After everything that happened last night, seeing her name made the guilt I’d been trying to push away come rushing back.

I opened the message.

“Are you excited for Friendsmas with Jeff? 😉”

Despite everything, I smiled a little.

It was nice to hear from her. Jagger was sweet to me. She always made me feel wanted, even when I didn’t know if I deserved it. She had been patient with me when I told her I wasn’t ready to go all the way. More than once, she had tried to take things further, and more than once, I had stopped her.

I had always told myself I was doing it because I needed more time.

But that wasn’t the whole truth.

The truth was that some part of me had been saving that part of myself for Keegan.

And last night, I had finally given it to him.

The realization hit me all over again.

I swallowed hard, staring at Jagger’s message.

How could I possibly tell her that?

How could I explain that I had spent so long keeping her at a distance because my heart belonged to someone else, only to finally give myself completely to that person?

And what made it worse was that Keegan didn’t even want me.

At least, not in the way I wanted him.

My thumb hovered over the keyboard.

“I’m actually thrilled about it. He is a good friend. But Jag, I need to tell you something,” I typed.

I stared at the words for a moment before hitting send.

Almost immediately, my phone started ringing.

Jagger was FaceTiming me.

My heart jumped into my throat.

“No, no, no…”

I watched my phone vibrate against my palm.

If I answered, she would see everything.

She would see my red eyes. She would see the tears I hadn’t completely wiped away. She would probably ask what was wrong, and there was no way I could lie convincingly to her face.

The phone kept ringing.

I let it.

Eventually, the screen went dark.

I breathed out slowly, relieved and ashamed at the same time.

Another text appeared.

“Brees? Are you busy?”

I stared at it.

I wanted to tell her.

God, I wanted to.

I wanted to call her and explain everything. I wanted to tell her that I was sorry, that I hadn’t meant for any of this to happen, that I cared about her, but that my feelings for Keegan had never really gone away.

But what would telling her now accomplish?

Last night couldn’t be undone.

And somehow, telling Jagger about it over text while everyone downstairs celebrated Christmas felt like the worst possible way to break someone’s heart.

I typed slowly.

“Yes. Opening gifts with the fam.”

I stared at the message before sending it.

The response came a few seconds later.

“Oh I’m sorry babe. I didn’t mean to bother you during family time. Call me later.”

I closed my eyes.

“Babe.”

The word hurt more than I expected.

She still thought we were okay.

She still thought I was the girl who had simply needed time. She didn’t know that everything had changed.

I set my phone beside me and stared at the ceiling.

How in the world was I supposed to recover from this?

Last night had meant something to me.

It hadn’t been random. It hadn’t been something I could just shrug off and pretend never happened. I had spent so long wondering what it would feel like to finally be close to Keegan in that way. When it happened, I had let myself believe—just for a little while—that maybe he felt the same connection I did.

Maybe it had meant something to him, too.

Maybe he had finally realized what I had known for years.

Maybe this was the moment everything changed.

But then morning came.

And Keegan acted like nothing had happened.

Like it hadn’t mattered.

Like I hadn’t just handed him the most vulnerable part of myself.

I pressed my palms against my eyes, trying to stop the tears from coming again.

Maybe I had been stupid.

Maybe I had mistaken what I wanted to believe for reality.

The worst part wasn’t even that Keegan didn’t love me.

It was that I loved him anyway.

I loved him despite every reason I had to stop.

Despite the way he pulled away.

Despite the way he acted like I was something he could turn off whenever it became inconvenient.

And now I had another person to hurt because of it.

Jagger didn’t deserve this.

She didn’t deserve to be someone’s second choice while they were secretly wishing for someone else.

I picked up my phone again and opened our conversation.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

I could type it.

I could tell her everything.

I could finally stop pretending.

But my courage disappeared.

Not yet.

I locked my phone and tossed it onto the bed.

Downstairs, I could hear everyone laughing. Someone shouted Baylen’s name, followed by a burst of cheers. The house was full of Christmas music, wrapping paper, laughter, and people who were happy.

And somehow, I felt completely alone.

I looked down at my hands and thought about Keegan.

About last night.

About the way I’d convinced myself it meant something.

Maybe someday I’d be able to look back at it without feeling this ache in my chest.

But today wasn’t that day.

Today, I was eighteen.

Today, I was supposed to be celebrating.

Instead, I was sitting upstairs trying to figure out how to put my heart back together after giving it to someone who had no intention of keeping it.

I wiped another tear from my cheek and let out a bitter laugh.

Happy fucking birthday to me.

The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She

Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be

Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee

“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of

I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi

We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
