Chapter 1

Author: Heart Echo
When my girlfriend, Kate Hopkins, was first transferred to Althoria research station, I had made the long trip to visit her.

Opening the door, I found her wrapping a blanket around a stark-naked man. The glow from the heater lit up her panicked face.

In our seven years together, it was the first time I'd ever seen her lose her cool.

She scrambled to explain that he was the station's new field journalist, that he wasn't used to Althoria's climate, and that she was just trying to save him.

The man added weakly that he was just there for a quick interview and didn't expect the blizzard, and he was grateful for her care.

He struggled to sit up, telling me not to get the wrong idea and promising he'd leave as soon as the weather cleared.

Over the next three years, we spent more time apart than together, but our love never faded.

Kate called me every single day without fail, and I took care of her mother, Rosalie Lewis, who suffered from Alzheimer's.

Then came her birthday, and I quietly sorted out all the paperwork.

I caught the last supply boat of the season, wanting to surprise her.

But the moment I reached her door, I heard a man laughing inside. "We were at it all night, and you still have energy for the aurora?

"Why should I keep it down? Your boyfriend is thousands of miles away."

I froze, the howling wind biting at my face.

As I peered through the window, I recognized the man from years ago. Around his neck was the scarf I had knitted for Kate with my own hands.

I stood there stiffly for a long time, unable to move.

Then, I rubbed my frozen hands together, pulled out my phone, and typed out a text. "Hey, Kate, what are you doing?"

Inside the room, Nathan Walsh's laughter was lazy yet clear through the door. "Want to try somewhere else tonight? How about the observatory?"

Whatever Kate said on the other end of the line only made him laugh harder. "I'm only worried that you'll be unable to stand and end up begging me again."

I stared down at my screen. Kate hadn't replied yet.

Glancing back through the window, I looked inside.

Three years had passed, and Nathan had shed his youthful innocence and gained a casual, roguish edge. He tilted his head as he talked on the phone, looking completely at home.

The heating must have been cranked up. Nathan wore nothing but a silk robe with the belt tied loosely around his waist. The collar hung wide open, exposing his collarbone and chest.

I looked down at myself.

I hadn't even taken off my heavy down jacket yet. After the grueling journey from Cormora, my cuffs were still stained with dried saltwater.

I froze and slowly looked up until I saw the scarf around his neck. It was off-white, the stitches uneven, with a small heart sewn onto the end. I had knitted that myself, stitch by stitch.

I was a surgeon, but I was terrible at needlework. My fingers had been riddled with pinpricks, all because Kate had told me the winters in Althoria were freezing.

Now, that very scarf hung loosely around Nathan's neck. As he spoke, he absentmindedly twirled the fringe around his fingers.

The three years of my fellowship passed in the blink of an eye, fleeting as a dream.Spring arrived late in Nivora. Even though it was already April, the wind still carried a sharp, biting chill. As I stepped out of the operating room, my phone buzzed with a new notification."Dr. Harvey, congratulations on winning this year's Nivora Young Medical Scholar Award! The ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon."I stared at the screen for three seconds before slipping the phone back into my pocket. A genuine smile finally graced my lips.A sudden gust of wind swept through the corridor window, catching the hem of my white lab coat.As I smoothed it down, my mind flashed back to a summer afternoon many years ago.The breeze back then had felt just as warm. Except the person who shared it with me hadn't crossed my mind in a very long time. The weather on the day of the ceremony was perfect.Right before I was scheduled to go onstage, a friend from Cormora shared some news with m

Needless to say, busyness proved to be the perfect medicine. Caught in a whirlwind of demanding hospital shifts and rigorous coursework, I simply had no time to dwell on my heartbreak.Occasionally, on my way to patient rounds, I would see couples leaning on each other in the hallways. A dull ache would flare up deep within my chest. But the very next second, a meeting notification would flash on my screen, and I'd hurry off to wherever I was needed next.I began to get used to this exhausting yet fulfilling lifestyle.Through the endless process of treating patients and saving lives, I discovered something far more grounding than romance.I knew some wounds could only heal on their own.And conveniently enough, I was a doctor. My profession had taught me exactly how to debride a wound. Now, I would use that same clinical detachment to excise the rotting past. The days blurred past in a flurry of work.My courses were progressing smoothly, but this hard-earned peace didn't las

Kate stood in the snow for a long time before finally sinking onto a bench. Slowly, she buried her face in her hands. How had everything fallen apart like this? She still remembered the summer right after graduation. The AC in our tiny rented apartment had broken down, and the electric fan creaked and groaned all through the night. I had held her close, both of us drenched in sweat. With my eyes closed, I had suddenly spoken up. "Kate.""Yeah?""We're going to be together forever, right?"She had kissed my forehead. "Yes. I'll love you forever."Back then, she truly believed that spending a lifetime together was the simplest thing in the world. But later, she went to Althoria. On the day she left, I had come to see her off. My eyes had been red-rimmed, but I had stubbornly forced myself not to cry.I had told her, "Just focus on your work. I'll handle everything back home."And I kept his word.As Rosalie's condition deteriorated, I went over every single week to feed her,

Kate lowered her head. A long, heavy silence stretched between us.When she finally looked up again, her eyes were completely red. "I-I don't even know what to say."She paused, taking a ragged breath. "I admit it. I messed up. I was alone out there for too long. The polar nights are endless. You never see the sun. He was always there at the observatory, talking to me, keeping me company…"She trailed off."Ruben, I'm sorry," she pleaded, leaning toward me. "I really am. But I do love you. You know I do."Kate stared at my face, looking like a drowning person desperately clawing at a piece of driftwood."You can yell at me or hit me. Do whatever you want." She reached out, trying to take my hand.I pulled away. Her hand froze in midair for a couple of seconds before slowly pulling back.A pair of small birds landed on the snow nearby, chirping quietly to each other."I truly know I was wrong. Can we please just start over?" Kate's voice was incredibly raspy. "It was just a te

After a brief period of recovery, I immediately set off on a new journey. As the plane broke through the clouds, everything about that city shrank into the distance. Thanks to the success of my recent research project and the buzz surrounding my newly published paper, I had been awarded a fellowship at Nivora Medical Center. It was an opportunity I had dreamed of for years, but one I had repeatedly hesitated to take. After all, it meant studying abroad for three whole years. I had been too worried about Kate's upcoming return and too obsessed with safeguarding our stable future. How incredibly naive I had been.Over the years, I had nearly lost myself entirely trying to accommodate her. This time, I was going to live strictly for myself. The day I landed in Nivora, the weather was beautiful.Winters here were usually bleak and overcast, but I happened to catch a rare, sunlit day.Sunlight spilled over the colorful houses, the masts of fishing boats in the harbor, and the cobble

Kate stared out into the pitch-black night, feeling uneasy. There was a dull ache blossoming deep within her chest, but whenever she tried to pinpoint it, it slipped out of reach.Suddenly, a warm arm wrapped around her waist from behind."What are you daydreaming about?" Nathan asked, his voice low and seductive."Distracted even when you're with me?"Kate stiffened. "Let go."Nathan didn't let go. Instead, he pulled her closer. "What's wrong?"His hands drifted up, beginning to undo the buttons of her shirt. "I didn't just bring that one outfit for your birthday tonight. Don't you want to see what else I have?"Irritated, Kate pushed his hands away a second time.Nathan looked up at her, his expression instantly crumbling into a pout. "Kate, I followed you all the way to Althoria and endured all these grueling polar nights with you. What do you think I'm doing all this for? I just want to be with you."Nathan lowered his head, his voice softening into a whine. "I know I'm no
