"Cheers!"
"Cheers!" "Happy Birthday, Dianne!" "Happy Birthday!" "Woah!" "Let’s get party!" We’re celebrating our best friend, Dianne, on her 19th birthday. My friends and I are having the time of our lives at a private resort we rented exclusively for her special day. "Babe, I’m sorry. I came late," I turned instantly upon hearing the familiar voice of my boyfriend, Draken. Right after saying that, he leaned closer and kissed me on the cheek. "Where have you been? You came so late tonight, huh?" I asked him curiously. "Ahmm... Something important came up. Anyway, where’s Dianne? Oh wait, let me greet her first," my boyfriend said, and then headed straight toward Dianne. They’ve always been close, so I didn’t mind. We spent the night immersed in celebration. Laughter echoing through the place, bottles of wine and beer scattered around the tables. The poolside glowed under soft lights as we sang, shouted, and danced without a care in the world. "So, Dianne, you’re 19 now. And I heard you’ll be studying in America soon? Is that true?" one of our friends asked teasingly. "Not in America, silly. In Japan. You never listen carefully," Dianne replied with a playful laugh. "So, when are you leaving?" I asked her curiously. "Hmm... that depends. You all know I can’t seem to leave my boyfriend behind," she said, pouting playfully. "Why don’t you just bring him along? Tsk!" "You’re crazy. That’s not possible. Anyway, it’s complicated!" "But hey, what if you leave him here and then find out he’s seeing someone else? Nowadays, that's the problem with being in a relationship," another friend teased. "Huh! He better not even dare. If he ever does, I’ll make him realize exactly what he lost," Dianne said confidently, tossing her hair as we all laughed. I couldn’t stop giggling at our conversation... typical girl talk. Meanwhile, our boyfriends were busy drinking near the mini-bar, while the rest of our friends were dancing wildly like there was no tomorrow. We partied until around three in the morning, and one by one, people started heading back to their rooms. "Babe, let’s go. Babe," I said softly to Draken, who was already too drunk to even sit properly. "Babe, come on, let’s go back to our room." "H-Hmm... Wait... D-Drink first, b-babe," he murmured. "Draken, no more," I said, sighing. "Tsk! Just a little. Come on," he insisted, still holding the half-filled glass of liquor. Because he wouldn’t stop bugging me, I took the drink myself, gulped it down, and set the glass back on the table. I slowly helped him up, placing one of his arms over my shoulder as we walked together. He was heavy, but thankfully, our room was only on the second floor, so we reached it without much struggle. Once we were inside, I closed the door and gently laid him down on the bed. The smell of alcohol lingered on him. But as I looked closer into his eyes, I noticed something unusual tears forming at the corners. Was he... crying? "I-I love you..." My heart began to race with affection the moment he said those words, even though he was drunk. "I love you too, babe," I replied softly, sitting beside him as I gazed at his face. He looked incredibly handsome even in his intoxicated state. But beyond that, what truly made me fall for him was how caring and gentle he always was. We wouldn’t have lasted more than three years if he weren’t— Wait. It suddenly hit me that our fourth anniversary was approaching soon. My heartbeat quickened. I couldn’t believe we had lasted this long four amazing years together. We started dating back in our third year of high school. Now that we’re both in college, nothing has changed between us. Gently, I placed my palm on his cheek and rubbed my thumb against his skin. "I love you very much, Draken Luzevia," I whispered softly before pressing a light kiss on his lips. There were countless times I had kissed him without his knowledge, usually when he was asleep. But then, something shifted. I suddenly felt a hand on my head. Wait! Was that his? Before I could think, Draken’s lips began to move against mine. It wasn’t just a soft kiss anymore. It was deep, fervent, and full of longing. "H-Hmm..." I moaned quietly, overwhelmed by the intensity of his kiss. I couldn’t control myself; it felt like I was completely drawn into his rhythm. He gently turned our positions, laying me down as he hovered above me, our lips still locked in that unbroken connection. Yet, after a few moments, he paused, his gaze piercing through the silence. "Babe..." he whispered, looking straight into my eyes. His expression was indescribable. A mix of tenderness and something deeper I couldn’t name. My chest tightened as warmth spread inside me. "Continue, please," I whispered, almost pleading. And he did exactly as I asked. He kissed me again, but this time more deeply and more passionately. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer. This time, every breath, every heartbeat, every exchange of kisses felt like the universe itself had stopped, and the only thing that mattered was us.After a few more minutes of talking, Karen excused herself and went home since she still had work the next day. So now, only Madrid, Charlie, and I were left. Matthew also texted that he would head straight to the hospital after changing his clothes.“Doctor, what about this? My mom still hasn’t woken up,” I asked when the doctor entered our room.“Don’t worry. We’re monitoring her vital signs, and there’s no problem. Just let her rest for now. Her blood sugar is also gradually returning to normal,” the doctor explained to me.“Is that so? Thank you,” was all I managed to say. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my chest after hearing that. She was almost there—my mom would get better soon.“Alright, I’ll leave you for now,” the doctor said before stepping out. Charlie gently rubbed my back to calm me down.“I told you, your aunt will be fine,” Charlie said as I struggled to hold back my tears. I faced him and gave him a bitter smile.“Mathia,” Matthew said when he arrived.
It is Sunday today, and I am with my son, Madrid, watching over my mother. Nurses and doctors keep coming in to check on her. I have already sent a photo as proof to ma’am Sofia that I am at the hospital. According to her message on Viber, she will show it to our boss so my absence will be considered valid.“Mom, grandma will get better, right?” my son asked, breaking the silence between us.“Of course, my child. Why did you ask that? Grandma is doing just fine. We’re just waiting for her to wake up so her recovery can continue and we can finally go home,” I replied as I gently stroked his head.“I really miss grandma,” my son said softly. I hugged him and kissed the top of his head because I knew how sad he was about what happened to his grandmother. All of us were deeply worried about her.I turned my head when the door opened. I saw Karen arrive.“Hi,” my son greeted her. Karen waved back at him and smiled.“Karen, you came to visit? How did you know we were here at the hospital?”
“Mathia, you’ve been spacing out for a while now. Is there a problem?” Aileen asked me. We were currently on our lunch break, but I couldn’t eat properly because my mind kept drifting to how my mom was doing. I had no appetite at all.“I’m just worried about my mom. She’s in the hospital right now. She was rushed there last night—Wait... I forgot to ask ma’am Sofia if I could be absent for a day. Tss!” I said to them.“Eat first. You might end up getting sick yourself,” Von told me.“What happened? Why was your mom hospitalized?” Aileen asked again.“Someone tried to snatch her bag while she was on her way home last night, so she fought back. She got shot,” I explained weakly. I saw shock and concern clearly written on their faces.“Let’s visit your mom later. We’ll come with you,” Von said.“Yeah, so we can meet her and check on her,” Aileen added.“Oh... aren’t you both busy?” I asked, just to be sure.“No. It’s fine. Besides, we’re already friends here at work, so it’s only right t
I left the house early and locked the door since neither Madrid nor Matthew was home. My brother took a leave from work to look after Mom and brought Madrid with him since he didn’t have school today.I was currently riding a tricycle on my way to Charlie’s house. The trip took more than ten minutes before I arrived. I found him watering the plants, so I knocked on the gate.“Mathia?” he asked, as if he couldn’t believe I was standing outside his house. He immediately opened the gate for me.“H-Hello. Uhmm... these are the things you were supposed to pick up. I delivered them myself so w-we could talk. I-If that’s okay?” I explained.“Come in. Go inside,” he invited, so I walked in. “I’ll take that,” he added as he carried the large box I was holding. He also opened the door for me so we could enter the house. He asked me to sit in the living room and served me hot chocolate and a sandwich before sitting beside me.“Uhmm... I really came early so we could talk. S-Sorry about that, Cha
When I arrived home, I immediately prepared the remaining shirts and cologne that Charlie had ordered. I planned to personally deliver them to him tomorrow so we could talk before I go to work.“Mama, I don’t have school tomorrow. It’s Saturday. How about you?” my child asked.“I still have work. I need to finish my two-week training before I can get a day off. Once I have a day off again, we’ll go out and bond,” I explained to my child.“Okay, mama,” he replied politely, making me gently pinch his cheek in delight. After wrapping everything, Matthew arrived just in time.“Are those for Charlie? Let me take them so I can head home already,” he asked.“No, not now. Do you have work tomorrow? Just take me to him so I can personally deliver these. I also need to talk to him,” I explained to Matthew.“Why, mama? Did you and Uncle Charlie fight?” Madrid suddenly asked. I smiled at him and shook my head.“No. We just have something important to talk about,” I replied. “Matthew, please bring
“Not even a single chance? You didn’t see anything in Charlie?” Mom asked again.“Even if he’s kind, attentive, thoughtful, handsome, and well-off, there’s still nothing. I really can’t see myself with him for life,” I answered.“Why? Don’t tell me you still love your former boyfriend?” Mom asked. My forehead creased at that.“No, Mom. Why would I still love that person? He left us,” I replied. “I just don’t want to... for now.”“Sigh, my child. Why don’t you let Charlie enter your heart? It’s fear that keeps it closed. How will you know if he’s the one for you or not if you won’t give him a chance?” Mom asked.I remained silent as she let out a deep sigh.“You know what? There’s something I haven’t told you and Matthew yet. Did you know that your father and I weren’t really meant for each other?” she asked. Curious, I furrowed my brows.“How can you say that?” I asked.“When we were in high school, he liked my famous friend, Trina. She was rich and her family was well-known. Since sh
