LOGINBy the next morning, the Vanderbilt family had collapsed.
Serenity sat at the kitchen island, watching the news on her tablet.
"Breaking News: Chloe Vanderbilt arrested for corporate espionage and fraud. Stocks of the Vanderbilt Group plummeted by 40% overnight..."
The video showed Chloe being led out of her mansion in handcuffs, hiding her face from the cameras. She looked nothing like the arrogant woman from yesterday.
"Justice is served," Serenity whispered, taking a sip of coffee. She felt a heavy weight lift off her shoulders.
She looked towards the garden. Alex and Mia were playing with the new puppy Jackson bought them. They looked so happy.
It was all thanks to Jackson.
And Alex, of course. But without Jackson's resources and protection, she would have been crushed by the media.
"Thinking about me?"
A deep voice sounded behind her ear.
Serenity jumped. Jackson was standing right behind her, leaning against the counter. He smelled of fresh soap and mint.
"I was thinking about... how to thank you," Serenity admitted, turning her chair to face him. "You saved my career, Jackson. And you defended Alex."
"And?" Jackson raised an eyebrow, waiting for more.
"And... I'm grateful," Serenity said sincerely. "Thank you."
Jackson sighed dramatically. "Just 'thank you'? That's it?"
"What else do you want?" Serenity asked warily. "I already cooked you breakfast."
"Alex got a raise in allowance and two bitcoins," Jackson took a step closer, trapping her between his legs and the chair. His eyes darkened. "I did more work than him. Don't I deserve a reward too, Mrs. Sterling?"
Serenity's heart skipped a beat. She tried to lean back, but there was nowhere to go.
"I... I can design a custom ring for you," Serenity offered.
"I have enough jewelry," Jackson stared at her lips. "I want something money can't buy."
He leaned down, placing his hands on the armrests of her chair, caging her in.
"I want a date."
"A date?" Serenity blinked, surprised. She expected him to ask for... well, something physical.
"Yes. A real date," Jackson said softly. "No kids. No business partners. No pretending for the cameras. Just a man taking a woman out for dinner."
He brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"Five years ago, I never took you on a proper date. We went from strangers to a married couple, skipping all the steps in between. That was my mistake."
"I want to start over, Serenity. I want to court you properly."
Serenity looked into his eyes. They were sincere, vulnerable, and incredibly handsome.
"You want to date your ex-wife?" she teased lightly to hide her nervousness.
"I want to date the mother of my children. And the only woman I've ever loved," Jackson corrected her.
The air around them grew hot.
"Say yes," he whispered, tilting his head to graze her cheek with his nose. "Or I will kiss you right here, in front of the housekeeper."
"Jackson!" Serenity blushed, pushing his chest. But her hands had no strength. "Fine! Yes! Just... behave yourself."
"Good," Jackson smirked triumphantly. "Tonight at 8. Wear that red dress. The one with the backless design."
"How do you know I have a red dress?"
"I bought your whole closet, remember?" Jackson winked.
He finally pulled back, leaving Serenity breathless and flushed.
"Alfred!" Jackson called out to the butler as he walked out of the kitchen with a spring in his step. "Book the rooftop at The View. And get the best violinists in the city."
Serenity watched him go, shaking her head.
He was bossy, arrogant, and impossible.
But as she looked at the calendar, she found herself smiling.
A date.
For the first time in years, she wasn't just a mother or a designer. She felt like a girl in love again.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white. That night, the Palace was quiet. But the air was heavy. In the royal nursery, five-year-old Aurora was tossing and turning in her bed. She was sweating.“No… go away…” she whimpered in her sleep.Around her room, objects began to react to her distress. Her teddy bears floated into the air. The heavy curtains rustled as if caught in a storm, though the windows were closed. The water in her glass began to boil.In the Dream:Aurora was standing in a field of grey ash. The sky was purple. In the distance, a massive Black Tower stretched up into the clouds. It looked like a needle piercing the sky.Standing at the top of the tower was a man. He didn't have a face. Just a smooth, white mask with a single vertical line drawn on it."Come here, little star," the man’s voice echoed inside her head. "Your light belongs to me."Shadowy hands reached out from the ground, grabbing Aurora’s ankles."Daddy!" she screamed in the dream. In the Real World:CRACK!The mirror on Aurora's wall shattered
