I hurried my steps to keep up with him. Obsidian disappeared from sight, only to reappear a few seconds later.
My brows dipped when I realized that he was heading towards the waterfall. I couldn’t understand what the hell his problem was. Hadn’t we all agreed that Vanya was going to be our mate? He didn’t say anything when we made that decision, why now?
After spending the whole night with her, and giving her some of his blood, why had he rejected her?
“We need to talk,” I called out.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
My hands curled into fists as my anger increased with every step I took.
Obsidian stopped at the edge of the pool and undressed.
I swallowed and allowed my eyes to trail over his tattooed skin before he dived into the water. Shaking away the sudden lust, I stopped next to his discarded clothes and waited for him to resurface.
Two minutes passed before his head popped up a few feet away.
“What happened?” I called out to him. “You made her breakfast.”
Obsidian once again ignored me. I watched in frustration as he swam over to the waterfall and disappeared underneath the water again.
Hesitating, I undressed and dropped my clothes on top of his. I sucked in a deep breath and then dived into the water. I followed his trail toward the waterfall, then dived underneath the water and resurfaced on the other side.
My eyes darted around, searching, but not locating him.
I tensed when I sensed someone behind me, but when I turned around, there was nobody there.
“Obsidian!” I called out. “Can we just talk for—?”
“Talk about what exactly?” he asked from behind me.
Pursing my lips, I turned to face him. “We need to talk about Vanya.”
His eyes narrowed. “I healed her. What more do you want?”
“I want to know why you’re rejecting her when all you’ve been doing is watching her.”
“I haven’t—”
“There’s no use denying it,” I interrupted him. “I know that you’ve been watching her,” I hesitated, “ever since she rescued you when she was just a little girl.”
Anger flashed through his eyes as his lips curled into a sneer. I was treading a dangerous path, but I didn’t back off. Swimming closer, I made sure to hold eye contact with him.
“You always made sure that she was safe. Hell, Obsidian, you’ve been stalking her for years, ever since she found you.”
The anger had faded, but there was no emotion in his dark eyes. His stare was cold and void of emotion, and I hated it.
“Why are you pushing her away when all you’ve ever wanted was to hold her close and never let go?”
I waited and waited.
But Obsidian said nothing. With a growl, he disappeared underneath the water again. I sighed, my stomach dropping when I realized that I would be returning home without any answers.
“Take her home, Dev.”
I frowned and watched him as he climbed over the rocks and disappeared into the cave.
I didn’t hesitate to follow him.
My steps faltered at the entrance of the cave. I took in everything that was scattered about, including the sleeping bag and the fire pit.
So this was where he was always disappearing to.
“Go away.”
Licking my lips, I moved deeper into the cave and took in the not so obvious things—like the pool of fresh blood close to the fire pit.
“Go back to your human,” he sneered.
I spun, giving in to the temper. “What the hell is your problem?” I yelled. “I’m getting fucking sick of your mood swings! You’ve just spent the whole night with her. You made her breakfast!”
Obsidian just continued to stare at me with a blank face.
My hands curled into fists. I wanted to hit him so fucking badly. Taking a step closer, I forced the words out instead.
“She’s still the same person who brought you flowers and read to you. She’s—”
“—human.”
“Jesus, Obsidian!” I stormed over to him and gripped his shoulders. “Not all of them are bad! Not all of them want to hurt you like—”
He moved, cutting off my words. One second, we were standing and the next, I was on my back with him straddling me and his forearm resting across my throat.
“I’m a sadist, Dev. Do you know what that means?” Obsidian rasped, his face inches away from my face. “I get off on causing pain.”
I stared into his darkening eyes inches above mine.
Obsidian’s arm slid away from my neck. He didn’t get off me; instead, he braced his hands on either side of my face and lowered his head until only a breath separated our lips.
“Last night—” he stopped and closed his eyes “—last night, I… I tortured her.”
Ice ran through my veins. I had checked, there hadn’t been a mark on her skin.
“Not the way you’re thinking,” he rasped. “But I wanted to. God, Dev, I wanted to mark her skin so I could watch her bleed.”
His confession left me speechless, that and the feeling of his shaft jerking against my stomach. Obsidian was turned on by just imagining hurting her.
A sadist.
I knew what it meant. It was a word that some of the pride members used to describe the doctors at the facility. It was a word I never thought would ever be associated with Obsidian, despite his past.
“Say something.”
I opened my eyes and blinked up at him. There were a lot of things I wanted to say. The pride had chosen me as their leader, which meant that it was my duty to eliminate every possible threat.
But this time, Vanya’s safety came before theirs. I needed to make sure that Obsidian wasn’t a threat to her.
“Show me,” I told him. “Show me what you wanted to do to her last night.”
He is defenceless. I could easily hurt him. To be honest, I had considered it, but then Devrim’s words flashed through my mind and pulled me out of my disturbing thoughts.Devrim had been right. But it didn’t make me fear Obsidian less.I sat in the chair a few feet from the bed, staring at the door as I waited for Devrim to return. Every passing second that he was away made my mind race with things that could go wrong.Darkness was creeping in on me, and I had no idea how to handle it.A whimper from the bed made my eyes snap over to it.Obsidian was on his stomach, clutching the pillow beneath his head as his big body trembled. The whimpers changed into growls that made my skin break out in goosebumps. The room suddenly fell silent again, but it didn’t last long.Rolling onto his back, Obsidian clutched at the sheets as his whimpers started up again. It got louder and louder.Tears filled my eyes.It sounded like he was in pain. What am I supposed to do? My eyes darted over to the
I think I’m going to pass out. After everything that had happened, I never thought that I would be returning to the cabin. My steps faltered when we reached the front door. Oblivious to my hesitation, Devrim opened the door and entered. As he turned to close it, his eyes locked on me. “Vanya?”When he told me that Obsidian was sick, the concern I felt had me agreeing to go with him, but standing outside the house made me second guess myself.I was about to face the man who had attacked me, the man who haunted my dreams, and not in a good way.Swallowing, I took a step forward, but my muscles tensed, preventing me from moving.“What’s wrong?” Devrim asked as he walked over to me. “You’ve gone pale.”“I…” My words trailed off when movement behind him caught my attention. My knees weakened when a wave of fear hit me. I wasn’t ready to see him yet!Panic hit next.If Devrim hadn’t grabbed hold of my arms, I would have run away.“Rosebud—”“I don’t want to see him,” I blurted.“Please, Va
What are monsters? The imaginary creatures we were sure hid under our beds? Were they the creatures that the authors and filmmakers created? Maybe the stories told to scare us were monsters in their own way? Or maybe the adults who told us those stories were the real monsters?A monster was cruel and evil.A monster was someone who found joy in hurting others. Like those men who hid in the shadows, waiting for a woman or man to come along. A monster was someone who killed without a second thought.I sniffed and reached up to wipe the tears from my cheeks. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from the group of kids in the alley below me. I had spotted them the moment they entered. One of them had pulled out a knife and was busy dissecting a dead animal. Are they monsters? The moment the kid had pulled out the knife, I had thought of Obsidian, and then my mind had trailed to Devrim and Ezra.I hadn’t seen them in weeks. As soon as the doctor had given me a clean bil
“Get the fuck out!” Ezra sneered.I ignored him and made my way over to the bed, but he stepped in front of me and flashed his teeth. I growled at him, but he didn’t even flinch. My eyes narrowed and my fists clenched at my sides.“You’re not allowed in here,” he hissed.“I’m here to talk to Vanya,” I told him.He growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes shot over his shoulder to her. Her head was bent, her hands clutching at the sheet. I sucked in a deep breath and closed my eyes. The sweet smell of her fear filled the room. She’s scared of me. “Vanya?”Her body jerked as if I’d struck her. Slowly, she raised her head, but she couldn’t look me in the eyes. Her eyes briefly glanced in my direction, then instantly lowered again. What little colour she had in her cheeks when I arrived was now gone.“Get out,” Ezra growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes snap back to his. “I’m talking to her and not to you.”“She doesn’t want to fucking talk to you! What made you
There was no annoying beeping filling my ears. No machines attached to every possible inch of my body. Everything was silent which made me feel like I was alone, but I knew I wasn’t, because I could feel the comforting weight of another hand on mine.I wasn’t dead.I wasn’t alone. But I was in pain. The constant throbbing of my shoulder and the feeling of fire ants crawling all over my body was pulling me from my sleep.I didn’t want to wake up, because in my dreams, everything was okay. In my dreams, Obsidian was smiling at me, and Ezra had accepted the fact that Obsidian and Devrim loved each other. In my dreams, everything was perfect. But dreams only lasted so long before reality started creeping in and everything crumbled and the real world showed its ugly face.A soft sigh reached my ears, followed by the sound of a chair creaking. The weight on my hand disappeared, making emptiness fill me.I had fucked up and now I was all alone.“I know you’re awake, sugarplum.”I hesitated
It was all part of his plan.If Vanya died, I would be blamed for it. They’d kill me and every other pride member on the island. The humans would be turned against us by Reeves, because he was powerful enough to accomplish that.I knew he had been watching us. I knew he had seen me attacking Vanya.Small cameras had been set up in the corners. The entrance and exit had also been revealed numerous times when he entered and left. The gas he had used to knock me out in order to move me was something they had used in the facility. What was really worrying was the fact that he somehow got hold of the gas in the first place and that he knew so much about me.My eyes darted to one of the small vents I had seen hidden slightly from the human eye. It was how he was planning on knocking me out again.I was just waiting for the right time to strike. I paced back and forth next to Vanya’s unconscious body. Stopping, I licked at the deep wounds on her upper arms. A shudder raced through my body an
