ETHAN

Staring at Leander, my lips pressed into a thin line, and a hint of desperation showed in my eyes.

This was a rare occurrence.

Something I'd never expected. But it could also disappear at the twinkle of an eye if I fail to hold on to this man before me.

He was my salvation. The only one who could keep me alive.

I stared into his eyes, not ready to let go. For my life and for my future child...

"Help me, please," I repeated.

"It's a transaction. I'll give you what you want."

Leander's eyes turned chilly.

He tapped my fingers that had grabbed the sleeve of his shirt at some point. "Let go." He said lowly.

Reluctance flashed across my eyes. I knew letting go now would make it even more difficult to see in the future.

However, I was even more certain of what would happen if I pushed too far. "Okay." I let go and took a step back.

"I won't trouble you, Leander. I will also give you enough time to think this through." With that, I turned around to leave.

I could feel his gaze following behind me, and my steps were a little hurried.

I was nervous, silently hoping for him to call me back.

Ridiculous. I should have known that was impossible.

Leander didn't make me stay. He didn't agree to my terms either.

I walked out of the bar with my head slightly lowered. I felt weak from within.

Entering my car, my head throbbed faintly. I glanced at the entrance of the bar again and saw Leander stepping out with another man behind him.

The man looked delicate and tall. He was the obedient type that powerful men usually love to spoil.

My mood soured.

I started the car and drove away from the bar. I didn't want to wait a moment longer. But returning to the hotel was something I obviously wouldn't do either.

I drove down to my parents' house.

The drive there was silent. I couldn't stop looking around.

The bright road light covered my car in a hazy brightness, but none of its beautiful sparkle cleared my heart.

I was back again. Yet, the timer never stopped.

From the moment I stepped out of that bar, the timer had begun again, and it was reducing really fast.

Even without checking the time, it was enough to tell me how many minutes I had spent on the way.

The headache grew worse.

I drove my car to the parking lot outside my parents' grand apartment and stepped out of the car.

Ignoring the astonished gazes of the workers and security men, I entered the house and knocked on my parents' door.

"Who's there?" My mother's muffled voice rang from within.

My throat got caught.

"Honey, it seems someone's at the door." I heard her saying to my father.

I lowered my eyes, trying to control my thoughts.

"It's me." My voice was hoarse.

The room fell silent.

Their surprise was expected.

I'd left the house this morning with the intention of getting married and never returning single again.

Their expectations would be for me to be on my husband's bed at a time like this, serving him and building our relationship.

My parents had spent a lot on the wedding and had showered me with their blessings.

It was my choice, and being as great as they were, they wouldn't go against their son's wishes and make him unhappy.

A small smile formed on my face.

How I wished I had listened to their warnings.

The door opened, and my father poked out his head. His eyes shone as if disbelieving the fact that the one standing before him was his recently married only son.

"Son?"

My lips pressed thinly. "Dad."

The word came out weaker than I would have loved. "I'm back."

My dad's eyes softened. He grabbed my hand and pulled me into the room.

"Hm, welcome back, son." He calmly said.

Sitting at the edge of the bed with a bathrobe wrapped around her slim body, my mother's brows lifted slightly when she saw me.

My mother approached and gently patted my back. "Are you hungry? Mother will make you something delicious." She pointed to my stomach.

The smile on her face was genuine with no ounce of worry. My father was the same.

It was as if the two hadn't noticed my red face, nor my presence in their place so late at night when it was supposed to be my wedding night.

"Hm. I'm hungry. I want to eat mum's food." I said with a small smile.

My mother chuckled. She picked up a jacket from the stand and draped it around her shoulders. "Come with me. Let's go make your favorite food."

Father also agreed with her.

We walked into the kitchen together.

The maids who were still awake, greeted. "Madam, do you need us to make something?" One of them asked.

My mother shook her head. "No. I've got this. You can all go to bed." She waved them off.

I watched as my mother and father turned around in the kitchen, cooking and cutting.

My mother brought over a seat for me while my father helped her with the little things he could.

The two kept making small talk. None of them mentioned anything about my marriage.

The food was soon made, and the dining table was arranged.

We sat as a small family and dug into the food.

Tasting my mother's meal again, my throat felt dry, and my eyes stung. I ate hungrily, stuffing meals into my mouth with a careless attitude.

Tears welled up in my eyes. "Mum, dad..." My voice was barely a whisper. "I'm sorry."

I should have listened to your advice. I should have been filial with you. I...

My tears wouldn't stop rolling down my cheeks. "I'm truly sorry, Mum, Dad."

Even this moment seemed stolen, and with the countdown, it felt like it wouldn't last long.

ETHAN The thought finally brought a genuine smile to my face, and my earlier weariness dissipated. Though it was dangerous and might leave me sick in the stomach every day, it was still a good move at the moment. Fighting with someone as experienced as Vesper and Nick, attacking them head-on might backfire, too. Especially with Nick being an actor and being able to control public opinion. I wouldn't want to fall into their trap. No, in this life, they could only be the ones to suffer. I couldn't, and I wouldn't suffer. I watched patiently as the people walked in and out, auditioning, thanking the judges, and leaving their names as they filed out of the room. Soon, someone stepped in. A familiar actor. My brows creased. This was Raviel, Nick's ultimate rival in the future. The two were always fighting over an award or drama. Honestly, Raviel was more of an actor than Nick, and he was even more good-looking, but because Nick had the support of my family and Vesper's, Raviel wa

ETHANMy butt grew hot on Leander's lap. Embarrassment crept to my cheeks, turning them red and burning. My eyes wavered. Leander's eyes remained narrowed, his emotions unreadable, and his hand on my waist tightened. "What are you doing?" His voice was etched with warning. My chest heaved, on the verge of an explosion. Forcing myself to look back into those profound and unreadable eyes, my fingers curled, and my stomach lurched. I swallowed an imaginary lump in my throat and forced a smile. However, I had no idea what I really felt inwardly. I was wrong. Leander didn't love me...The realization should make me happy, right?"I was testing the ground. We are doing something deeper tomorrow, aren't we?" I tried to sound as composed as I could. "By the way, we've also done it yesterday. Why are you so rigid?" With that, I stood up, laughed awkwardly, and began arranging my suit. Leander was silent. With my back turned to him, I had no idea what his expression was or what was g

ETHANLeander's eyes flicked over me. He averted his gaze and pressed his thumb to his forehead... "Is that why you're here?" He sounded almost detached. I nodded. Despite knowing he wouldn't see. "No." He replied. I expected that. I covered my mouth and chuckled. "What do I have to do?" Leander raised his eyes. "Nothing." My lips pursed. He was really stubborn. Standing up, I approached him and stood behind him. My fingers trailed from the back of his head to his temples, slowly pressing gently. Leander gripped my right hand. He raised his head to look into my eyes. His blue eyes stared into mine. Unreadable. Almost indifferent. "Don't." He warned. I stared back, resisting the urge to back off. "I want to." My lips curled. "You have a headache, don't you? Let me give you a warm massage." I offered. Leander's fingers tightened against mine. An unknown emotion flashed across his eyes for a moment. His lips pressed into a thin line. "I don't need it." His voice was low. Al

  • REBORN TO WIN: Father-in-law, Keep Me Alive.    CHAPTER 35:

ETHANOnly when I got inside did I remember that it was my first time coming to the office in this new life. In my past life, I had visited Leander in the office several times for different reasons. But in this life, I hadn't. I recently married his son, and before marriage, we weren't exactly that close. Even if we were, I wouldn't visit him in the office without a proper reason. After going through different stops, I finally sat in the assistant's office, waiting for him to finish his meeting. His assistant only glanced at me once before he continued with his job. He didn't know me well enough to let me into the boss's office. He also didn't want to disturb the boss's meeting. I could only sit there patiently, waiting for Leander to be done. An hour passed. Two hours. Three hours. My butt began to ache. I raised my head to look at the assistant, who was still working away. "Excuse me, when will he be done?" It was taking too long. The assistant coughed awkwardly. He picked

ETHANThe thought of the audition kept my mind fully occupied all morning. So much that I couldn't listen to the words Nick and Vesper said. After a while, I pushed aside the plates and stood up. "I'm leaving." Nick raised a brow. "Where?" I glanced at him, and my expression remained casual and bold. "Office." He looked taken aback. His lips parted like he had a lot to say, yet he was unable to say anything. Without waiting for him to gather his thoughts, I turned around to leave. A sharp clank followed by the sound of the seat being pushed aside. "Baby," Vesper called urgently. I stopped without turning to look at him. "Let me drop you off." He offered. My brows raised. "Nick is still around," I mentioned. Why would he want to leave Nick behind? Wasn't he always the one preaching about how a guest shouldn't be left alone at home and how I, even while heavily pregnant, should go to the hospital for a check-up alone? I rubbed my nose and smiled quietly. "Don't worry." Wit

  • REBORN TO WIN: Father-in-law, Keep Me Alive.    CHAPTER 33: AN AUDITION

ETHAN The thought was on my mind even as I closed my eyes to sleep. It weighed heavily on my mind. I tried hard to remember how we met and the things we'd done together. However, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find a reason for him to hate me this much. We've fought several times in the past. From trivial situations to normal friends' bickering. But every time, we ended up sorting things out and becoming friends again. Thinking about those small fights, we both had faults. He was either at fault or I was. Also, none of those issues were enough to warrant hatred. They weren't. Perhaps he was just too greedy. But I honestly couldn't believe that was the only reason...My eyes grew heavier as I yawned repeatedly. My mind grew foggy, and I slowly became too lazy to think about Nick or even anyone else. Closing my eyes, I let out a deep breath and slowly sank into the sweet embrace of sleep. Not long after, I heard the door opening, and then someone was sleeping beside me

ETHANHearing my phone ringing from my pocket, I frowned for a moment. Could it be a call from Leander? That seemed impossible. Leander wasn't the type to call... moreover, he wouldn't even call me. Maybe it was from my parents. I shook my head lightly, wondering why I was thinking so much when
