She watched as she stood in the meadow. Her mother was beautiful. Ginger hair and amber eyes like Hazel's, but more fierce and kind at same time. She held out her hands, her palms up, as fire danced across her fingers glowing gently."You have my gift, the gift of our ancestors," her mother said, and her voice was like the wind but warm. "The power to heal. To command. And to burn."Hazel looked down at her own hands. Flames flickered across her palms."I don't understand.""You will." Her mother smiled, and the meadow around them shifted. She saw herself in a castle before a throne. "The moon goddess chose our bloodline, to protect the rest, to rule, this throne awaits you.""I still don't understand."But her mother was fading, dissolving into the light. "Go to the temple. The answers await you t
Chapter 19: THE CHALLENGE It has been a week since Hazel's training. A week of endless training, a week of waking up with aching bones, but still thrived to wake up and train, a week of not giving up.Hazel was in the middle of a drill lunging, retreating, lunging again when she felt eyes on her. Not Piper's adoring gaze or Caden's assessing ones. Something colder which made her feel uncomfortable as she felt goosebumps all over her body, and all the hairs on her neck rose. She turned.Lyra bronze stood at the edge of the field, arms crossed, wearing full warrior leathers. Her dark hair was pulled back in a severe braid, and her brown eyes held all the warmth of a frozen lake."Omega," lyra said in a very disrespectful tone."Lyra," Hazel replied, her guts telling her she meant no good, and her guts never failed her.Caden stepped between them. "Lyra. You will address her as your Luna, she's the alpha king's mate. By the way, what do you want?""To observe." Lyra's smile didn't rea
Chapter 18: THE KITCHEN DISASTER It was Piper's idea."Since the chefs aren't around, let's make them ourselves," she said, bouncing on her heels in front of the kitchen doors. "Cookies. From scratch. By ourselves, like the independent women that we are."Hazel stared at her. "We don't know how to cook, I have never cooked before and you too, I have only ever sliced vegetables.""Come on, how hard can it be? , there is always a first time for things, let's just mix and mix then put them in the oven. And then magic happens cookies are ready ""That's not.... Magic, there's no magic in the kitchen.""Lets just use the cookbook we saw in the library," she was so happy, she was about to make cookies herself and there was nobody to stop them.Hazel doubted that, because the book had over five hundred pages, how are they supposed to use such a book to make cookies but Piper had already brought the book, she looked too excited for somebody that's about to work. The kitchen was empty, e
Chapter 17: IMPROVEMENT The third morning, Hazel arrived at the training field to find Caden already there, again, but this time something was different, usually he would be halfway through his own training section; she would have to wait for him, or he would stop for her.But today he wasn't training like before. He was waiting for her."You are early," he said."And you are earlier.""Fair point." He tossed her a wooden sword way heavier than the dagger, longer, more unwieldy. "Today we learn to keep our distances. Daggers are for close quarters, when you are close to losing to your opponent, when you are facing death right in the face then you can use daggers to eliminate your opponent. But swords keep you away from reach."Hazel caught the sword barely and nearly dropped it to the ground due to its weight. "This is huge.""It's a standard training blade. Get used to it and stop complaining. Every warrior in this castle started with this same sword, you have to get used to it if
Chapter 16: JEALOUS ALPHA. The library became Hazel's sanctuary. After training when her bones and muscles ached, she and Piper would go to the castle's library, searching rows upon rows for any book that interests them. Hazel had never seen so many books in her life. At shadow moon, she wasn't even allowed to touch even the smallest book in the Alpha's library. Here, she could read anything she liked with no one here to supervise her or tell her what to do. They spent hours there, pulling volumes at random, reading funny passages aloud, laughing until their voices went hoarse. They saw a large amount of history books, past romance of alpha's , cookbooks which Piper planned to use one day,and maps of different territories. Hazel kept staring at different maps, Tracing the borders of territories she had never seen, imagining a world beyond the walls that had confined her for so long. "Alright, I'm starving," Piper announced, slamming shut a book about ancient werewolf ritu
Chapter 15: PIPER'S CONFESSION The second day of training, Hazel didn't even make it out her door before she was ambushed. She had pulled her boots on, wincing at every bruise from yesterday, when the door opened without a knock. Piper stood there, already dressed., her hair braided and she was holding a woven basket. Its content was green apples, sliced watermelons, and water."Good morning," Piper sang, "you are up so early it's 5:30 am. Hazel stared. "Piper. It's barely dawn.""Mhmm. Best time for walks." Piper breezed past her into the room like she owned it. "Are you training again today? With Caden?""Yes, and wait, why are you here with .... Is that food?""Nope... Fruits. And water."Piper held up the basket like a peace offering. "For you. Post training recovery. Very important. I read it in a healer's text." Hazel shut the door. "You never cared about my training, what suddenly changed?." "I'm turning over a new leaf, I'm now interested." Piper linked their arms an
