Chapter 2. Pregnancy: Everything Became Worse

"You have an outstanding medical bill of $10,000,000 for five months, Mrs. Yvonne. Due to the arrears, the hospital reduced your mother's treatment measures."

Five months in arrears.

My mother has been in a coma for five months and has been suffering from a progressive brain tumor since two years ago.

It supposed to be my father's responsibility according to the agreement with grandfather. However, five months ago, when my mother fell into a coma, grandfather also died.

That means Dad hasn't paid for mom's treatment since grandpa died.

My body froze completely, my chest hit by something heavy. I was so shocked that I didn't know how to react. This wasn't something I expected.

"How about my mom's condition?"

"The malignant tumor has invaded almost all of his brain tissue, and he is in danger of being paralyzed."

I tried to hold back the emotions welling up in my chest, but my voice betrayed me. I trembled in fear.

"Please, can my mom get the same treatment as before? I don't want anything worse to happen to her," I said pleadingly.

"We are sorry, Mrs. Yvonne. You should pay the outstanding fees so that the hospital can continue with more intense treatment."

I exhaled heavily as I realized I didn't have that much money. Now I was in a situation that was suffocating me. My vision blurred with tears.

Slowly, as I backed away and turned to leave, my tears fell one by one. I began to feel fear creeping into my heart. What should I do now?

He betrayed the agreement with my grandfather.

He abandoned my mother with her illness.

What was Dad really thinking? Were my mother and I trash that could be thrown away at will?

I took out my cell phone. My hand trembled emotionally as I dialed Dad's phone number.

[Phone call rejected]

Panic began to seize my heart, I was momentarily dumbfounded, then I tried to reach him once more.

The second call was picked up by Dad. However, I heard his irritated grunt, and his voice sounded cold.

"Don't call me for nothing! Why are you always bothering me?"

I tried to ignore my heart being stabbed by Father's words.

"I've gotten a report that I'm five months in arrears on mom's medical bills," I said, trying to hold back the tremble of my voice.

"So what?" Dad sounded innocent, like it was no big deal. "I'm so tired to face your mom's illnes. I won't be responsible about her medical bills!"

Like a slashing knife, Dad's words cut me to the bones. This is a nightmare.

"Dad... you made a promise to grandfather," I wiping my hair in frustration. "Why you did this to me? Are you gonna let my mom suffering?!"

"Why should I pay for you both? I don't love your mom anymore. And just for you know, you're my unwanted child. This time, since your grandfather has died, I want to live happily with Jessy and my beloved wife now."

Ugh, that mistress!

Did I hear that correctly? Dad has choose to live with his new fucking wife and their child, then he abandoned me?!

"No... you promise me and grandpa. You'll have to pay for her medical expenses!" My voice rose without me realizing it.

"Since you humiliated Jessy in front of the VIP guests, I won't accept you back into the mansion, Yvonne. You're also divorced, so you have nothing to gain."

"Dad, no ... don't treat me like this!"

Dad's sigh could be heard. "It's up to you, Yvonne. Find a place to live, I'm not accepting you in this mansion anymore. If your mother dies, then I won't come to her funeral."

That was it. Before Dad finally end our call, leaving me speechless.

My life was completely ruined. Now I have no one, I've lost everything.

What fate was I living in?

Why am I stuck in the middle of this disastrous life?

My body was so weak that I almost stumbled to the ground. However, I felt someone's hand holding me back.

I looked over, seeing Theo in the same formal attire as at Jessy's birthday party. Theo looked at me intensely. In the split second of silence, I noticed the warm look in those eyes.

Something I've never seen since my mother and grandfather were gone from my life.

"Yvonne, I've paid your mother's medical bills."

That's what Theo said, before I felt an intense dizziness in my head. My body staggered again as my vision darkened completely.

"Congratulations, Mrs. Yvonne. You are pregnant. You are eight weeks along. Your body is very tired, please rest more."

My eyes had just opened when the doctor told me that. I was dumbfounded, almost unable to believe that I was pregnant.

I should have felt euphoric happiness at this moment. But I was scared. This felt like another nightmare.

During my marriage with Kale, I wanted this pregnancy. All these time I always imagined that I could give Kale proof of my pregnancy, and he would love me more.

Now it was different. I've been abandoned, Father kicked me out of the mansion, and I don't know where to go.

How can I support my child?

How can I give my child a better life?

"Yvonne," Theo's voice rang out. He sat down next to me.

"Theo... I wasn't supposed to get pregnant," I said in a low, soft voice.

Kale hadn't touched me in four years. It seemed strange that I was pregnant. I tried to recall our memories throughout our wedding.

In between those pieces of memory, there is the day Kale took me to a party.

Alcohol, drunk, did I not realize I had sex with Kale that day?

"Theo, what should I do?" My eyes welled up with tears. I looked at Theo and tried hard not to cry.

"Yvonne, don't cry, we can tell Kale—"

"No!" I argued, gripping Theo's hand. "He'll just make fun of me or tell me to abort this. I lost everything, Theo. I've already been kicked out of the mansion by my father..."

Theo was silent. He just watched me in a daze.

"What should I do if I've lost everything?" My voice trembled as I couldn't hold back my tears anymore.

Suddenly Theo grabbed one of my hands, and he took me into his arms.

This was the moment my whole body stiffened. I instantly forgot that Theo was Jessy's ex-fiancé. I just didn't resist, letting the warmth spread when Theo's hand rubbed my back gently.

"I'm sorry, Yvonne. Four years ago I shouldn't have pretended not to love you and let you marry Kale."
