CHAPTER 1 The Vanishing Relics

last update publish date: 2026-08-17 01:34:34

Morning drifts in slowly over Raven Hollow. At her cozy kitchen table, Evalyn Blackwood wraps both hands around her mug, feeling the heat slip away before she remembers to take a sip. The air sits heavy, the sort that settles in your chest and leaves your coffee resting on the table. Through the window, she watches mist cling to the cobblestones, stubborn and slow to lift, even as sunlight tries to find its way over the hills. The chapel bells mark the hour, but their sound is quieter than usual, softened by the hush that has spread over town.

By now, the market square ought to be alive with voices, laughter, the smell of bread warm from the oven. Today it sits quiet, as if everyone is waiting for something they can’t name. The baker’s ovens still burn, but even the fragrance of cinnamon and yeast can’t quite mask the anxiety drifting through the streets. Merchants stand behind their stalls, fussing with apples and carrots, but hardly anyone stops to buy. Conversations flicker and fade in low voices. Neighbors who previously lingered for gossip now glance over their shoulders before speaking.

The old fountain in the square still trickles under its cover of ivy and moss. Most days, children would be there, tossing coins and making wishes, but not today. The place is empty except for a few townsfolk, voices low and uneasy. Someone says they saw blue lights over the water after midnight. Someone else claims the lights rose from under the fountain, drifting up like lanterns before fading into the clouds. Folks act like they don’t believe it, but the way they glance at each other tells a different story.

Few whisper of stranger things.

Old Mrs. Finch says every clock in her house stopped at three minutes past midnight. The blacksmith’s apprentice swears the forge fire turned green for a few heartbeats before settling back. A shepherd from the western ridge won’t come into town after dawn, says he saw figures standing among the stones beyond the forest. Folks aren’t sure what to make of these stories, but no one laughs.

Above all, people talk about the seal.

Not openly. Never loudly.

The seal is older than anyone living, older even than the town records locked away beneath the council hall. Most folks know only scraps of its story, passed down on winter nights from grandparents to grandchildren. Some say it rests far beneath Raven Hollow, embedded in the land by witches and guardians long forgotten. Whispers say it was made to hold back a spirit called the Hollow King, who once ruled the valley with a silver tongue and a crown of shadows. Others say it keeps out something hungrier, older than the skeleton of the earth, waiting for a crack to slip through. No one agrees on the truth, only that the seal was meant to hold the line between what is safe and what is not. Maybe to keep something out. Maybe to keep something in.

But not everyone is content to let old stories fade. Some in town keep secrets heavier than others, knowledge passed quietly from generation to generation. More than once, a candle stays burning late behind the curtains of the apothecary or the librarian’s house. Eyes linger a moment too long when the seal is mentioned. Someone, somewhere, knows more than they're willing to say for now.

Until this morning, few people gave it much thought.

Now every conversation circles back to it.

A fisherman crossing the bridge around dawn says he found old symbols burned into the timber beneath his boots. A widow by the river claims she heard a low whirring through her walls all night. Even the animals seem uneasy. Dogs won’t leave their porches. Horses stamp and fret in their stalls. Ravens gather in strange numbers along the rooftops, watching with a sharpness that appears almost knowing.

By the time the council gathers in the old hall, the rumors have spread to every corner of Raven Hollow.

The old council hall holds its pause with the rest of the town. Those stone walls look heavier, stained-glass windows dim against the morning. Inside, the air is saturated with dust and candle wax, and something aged that never really leaves. Council members file in, expressions fixed, eyes lowered. Some carry ledgers, others keep small charms hidden in their pockets. No one is in a hurry to speak.

Outside, people gather on the steps, shivering in the cold. They watch the council members, hoping for some sign that things are still all right.

But reassurance never comes.

The council doors close with a heavy slam that echoes across the square as a warning bell.

A calm settles over the crowd.

Within that silence, Raven Hollow feels different.

Not broken.

Not yet.

But changed.

Something has shifted beneath the skin of the town. Something old is awake now. The quiet faith folks had in the seal, in the old protections holding, feels thinner than it once did.

Trust used to run steady, like the river past town, but now it fades away, cold and quiet. Suspicion settles in its place. Neighbors watch each other a little too long. Long-held grudges stir. Stories folks tried to forget start making the rounds again.

And under it all lingers a single question no one wants to ask aloud: If the seal is weakening, what has been waiting all these years for the chance to return? Already, in the half-lit corners of morning, a strange pattern has appeared in the frost along the chapel’s windows a shape no one remembers seeing before. Shadows slide the wrong way down the street behind the cobbler’s shop, and a thin, sour smell clings to the market air, sharper every hour. It is as if something on the other side of the seal has slipped a finger through the crack, testing how much more it might soon take.

It starts in pieces. The kind you almost miss, if you’re not looking. In the quiet streets of Raven Hollow, where gaslight still glows at dusk, and the summer air smells faintly of cut hay, it is easy for it all to slip by unnoticed.A mirror cracks in the upstairs bedroom. No sound of anything striking it. No reason. One moment it’s just the same as always: soft lamplight, blankets folded at the foot of the bed, the shape of someone passing by in the glass. Then a sharp crack splits the quiet. A thin line appears in the glass, then another, branching out until the whole mirror is laced with fractures. For a moment, the reflection wavers- not shattered, just unsettled, like something behind the glass tried to move and missed its chance. Then it’s still.Across town, a clock stops. The steady tick that’s always been there just…ends. The pendulum hangs still. The second hand caught between one moment and the next. The silence that follows i

Deep beneath the chapel, the ritual intensifies. This is more than tradition or belief; the ritual is meant to break the ancient seal and free what has been imprisoned for generations. The change is not sudden. It builds. Layer by layer, like pressure gathering beneath the earth. The relics begin to respond first.A thin, almost invisible glow stirs along the Moonstone Heart, silver light pulsing in and out, as if the stone is remembering how to breathe. The Silver Fang picks up that light, turning it colder, sharper, until it feels like winter in the palm of a hand. The Ashwood Sigil darkens, its lines filling with a dull ember-glow, like coals left too long in the hearth. And the Bloodstone Key…It shines.Deep.Wet.Alive.Light drifts across the altar, silver and restless, settling into the old grooves as if the stone has been thirsty for it. The floor stirs in answer. One rune kindles, a single mark flickering beneath the thief’s boot

Lucas experiences the disturbance differently. He’s near the river when it begins. The patrol is routine, quiet in that way Raven Hollow sometimes gets, like the whole place is holding its breath and no one knows the reason. The river moves beside him, steady, its surface catching the last of the light in broken pieces of gray and silver. The air smells of water and moss, cool and familiar, something to hold onto. For a moment, everything is just as it should be. Then it isn’t. Not the river. Not the world. Something else. A shift, quiet and easy to miss, unless you’re looking for it. Lucas always is. He learned the hard way, long ago, that nothing in Raven Hollow stays quiet for long not when you’re the one watching out for everyone else, not after what happened before.Lucas slows. He tilts his head, instinct catching before thought. The woods have gone still. No birds. No wind in the leaves. Even the river’s voice is softer now, its ru

The thief moves with care. There’s no hesitation. Not here. Each movement is careful, practiced, as if the steps have been taken a hundred times before, maybe more. The figure moves around the altar, steady and sure, boots barely making a sound against the old stone. Nothing rushed. Nothing uncertain. Just the quiet certainty of someone who knows exactly where they’re meant to be.Uncertainty doesn’t belong in this place. Only purpose. The chamber seems to notice, almost as if it’s waking up after a long sleep. The air shifts, slow and uneven, like someone remembering how to breathe. Somewhere, stone settles against stone, a quiet sound threading through the cracks in the walls. It’s easy to imagine the room itself is alive, remembering old routines. It feels like something is watching, waiting. The air thickens with every step, damp and cold, settling on skin and in lungs until each breath takes effort. The usual scent of earth and dust lingers, but underneath it,

  • Raven Hollow Mysteries: Moonbound Secrets   CHAPTER 33 The Ritual Begins

The ritual begins long before anyone realizes it has started. At first, Raven Hollow just feels off, like the town is holding its breath for reasons no one wants to name.Evening settles in, the sky too still, like someone pressed pause on the world. The breeze that usually stirs the maples never shows. Leaves just hang there, waiting. The air feels heavy, thick enough that folks notice but can’t quite put words to. Every sound seems muffled, as if wool has been stretched over your ears. The damp cool of the ground seeps up through the soles of your shoes, while the lingering taste of earth clings to every breath. Fingers brush against porch rails slick with gathering dew, the slight grit of dust settling on palms. It’s the quiet that gets to people first. No crickets start up at dusk. No birds call from the trees. Even the river that usually fills the valley with its steady rush sounds quieter, like it’s trying not to draw attention.Lik

The chill settles into her skin, steadier than sleep ever managed. She’d drifted in and out through the night, her mind looping the same questions: Was Celeste truly capable of what she feared? Had she missed some sign, some hidden warning? The worries circled until they lost their shape and became something heavier.
