Those toned arms weren’t just there on their own. “You’ve been really distant since Mira started taking care of you. And then she accused me of almost killing my son. I don’t know what to think of Anthony.” She said softly, her hand caressing my arm. She’s always been close to me and knows everything around the pack. We have drifted apart because of Mira and because she is dying. Her mark is deteriorating faster but we all know she will die. “I’m just tensed from stuff. Mira made a mistake and I will punish her for that.” I answered by pressing a kiss to her forehead. I need Astrid now more than ever. I can sense something stirring inside of her and the Alpha King clearly wants something to do with her. If I keep her to myself, then he won’t be able to do shit, at least she’d clock it sooner and help me stop him.
Davian’s POV The door shut behind Serra with a quiet click and that alone told me everything I needed to know. There was bad news with her. Not that I have received any good news since finding out about Anthony Riftclaw and his blue eyed Luna. I didn’t look up immediately. I finished signing the document in front of me then let the pen rest where it was before I finally met her eyes. “Say it.” Serra crossed the room slowly, her expression set in that calm clinical mask she wore when things were already past saving. I won’t have a better intel than her. “It’s not just the mark.” “I’m listening.” I leaned back slightly. “The degradation is accelerating beyond projection. That part we knew.” She placed a tablet on my desk, sliding it toward me. “But the toxins in her system are interacting with the bond magic.” I didn’t touch the tablet just stared at the words across and the image of a mark that looks awfully like Astrid’s. Her lean neck turning a shade too ugly. “Define i
Astrid’s POV The pain didn’t wake me gently yet again which is something I have started getting used to. This time it. dragged me up from sleep like something had its teeth in my throat and refused to let go. I didn’t move at first. My body stayed exactly where it was while the sensation spread starting at the mark, then pushing outward in painful waves to my neck and collarbone. My breath stopped for a minute because this is freaking new. I swallowed against it, forcing my hand up to my neck. The skin felt hot but it’s not even surface heat but deeper. Like something was burning under it working its way through me piece by piece. “Not now…” I muttered my voice gritty and gruff from sleep but I pushed myself upright. I stilled my fingers tightening on the edge of the bed as the floor shifted beneath me, my vision blurring at the corners. Black spots danced in and out like they were testing how far they could go before I dropped. I waited it out, counting sheeps slowly in my he
Astrid’s POV I went to the kitchen that afternoon pretending to check the meal for our guests, the Alpha King and the others when I saw a maid avoiding me like she was paid to do that. Instead of cornering her immediately, I gave her time until she tried to escape completely. “I can’t allow her to notice me—. She will understand right away. Where do I go now?” She kept having the same exact thought for hours straight. I didn’t call her out immediately because that would’ve been too easy. And Mira didn’t deserve clean. I followed her carefully and then I let the girl think she’d slipped past unnoticed. She moved fast through the back corridors, toward the servants’ wing. Not running but close enough to it that anyone paying attention would notice. Good! Let her be nervous. By the time she reached the storage rooms, I already knew. The way her thoughts stuttered and guilt sat too close to the surface. As long as she’s guilty, I think I can work with that. “I want Mira punis
Astrid’s POV The whispers started before I even reached the main hall. They didn’t stop when I walked in but lowered a little like I wasn’t supposed to hear them but they wanted me to. Poison. Luna. Calix. So Mira wanted this whole lie she’s made to escalate? She wants the entire pack to think I wanted to kill my own son? My steps slowed just slightly before I forced them steady again. I made sure my chin is up and my shoulders pulled back. The same mask I’d worn for years now sitting heavier than it ever had. The hall was fuller than it should have been for this time of day. Anthony stood at the front, speaking quietly with two elders. Mira was beside him with her eyes red, face pale and fingers twisting together like she was barely holding herself together. She saw me first and her first reaction was sharp inhale then a step back to hide behind Anthony. I almost raise a brow at that because it was well fuckinb played! Every head turned to me at her reaction. I walked forwar
Astrid’s POV The corridor outside the medical wing was too bright. There are way too many people outside. Their voices overlapped, footsteps hurried wit that sharp scent of antiseptic biting at the back of my throat as I pushed through the doors without slowing. One of the junior healers tried to stop me but I didn’t even register what they said. The room was already crowded. Warriors lined the walls, all tense and useless. A healer was arguing under her breath near the cabinet witj her hands shaking as she sorted through vials. And at the center of it all— Calix lay small on the bed looking too still. Mira hovered over him her hands moving faint rapidly as she pressed them to his chest, her voice breaking over itself. “I didn’t mean— I didn’t know— oh please, please wake up —” Her tears fell freely rolling down her face and dripping onto his blanket as her shoulders shook. She looked wrecked and destroyed since it’s her son. It looks convincing enough though. Anthony s
