Lyra's POV

The first thing I felt was a heartbeat.

It thudded steady and strong beneath my cheek, and for one disoriented moment I thought it was my own. Then arms tightened around me, warm and trembling, and a voice cracked above my head.

"Lyra?"

I gasped like a swimmer breaking the surface. Stars still wheeled behind my eyelids, and the dark field of my mother's dream clung to me like mist. I forced my eyes open.

Cassian's face hovered above mine.

He looked terrible. Stubble shadowed his jaw,

Lyra's POVI didn't sleep that night. The council had broken up without a decision, everyone shouting at once until Cassian called an end to it. Rowan had argued for locking Seraphine in a cell. Darius had argued for sending her away. Mira had barely spoken at all.Nobody had argued for saying yes.Sometime past midnight, I found myself walking the dark lanes between the tents, my boots crunching on frost. I told myself I was only checking the sentries. I was lying, and I knew it.The tent at the camp's edge was guarded by two of Rowan's soldiers. They straightened when they saw me."Lady Lyra.""I'd like to speak with her. Alone.""My lady, the Commander said—""I know what he said." I met the older soldier's gaze. "Please."He hesitated, then stepped aside.Seraphine sat on a narrow cot, a single candle burning beside her. She didn't look surprised to see me. She only closed the small book in her lap and stood, slowly, like someone bracing for a blow."You came.""I did." I let the

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Seventy-Six: Preparing for War

Lyra's POVWithin a week, the border outpost no longer looked like an outpost.Tents sprawled across the hillside in crooked rows. Smoke curled from a dozen cookfires, and the clang of hammers on steel rang from dawn until dusk. Banners I had never seen before snapped in the wind, Mooncrest silver, the two Alphas who'd stood with us, and the green of Cassian's loyalists, who had slipped out of the capital in twos and threes.By my count, we had nearly nine hundred warriors. Malachar had thousands.I tried not to think about that as I crossed the training yard."Again," Darius barked. "And this time, hold your guard like you actually want to keep your head."A row of recruits stumbled through the drill, farm boys and grandmothers, a baker still dusted with flour. Their wooden swords clacked clumsily against one another."You're not looking at your opponent's feet," Darius told a lanky boy of sixteen. "Feet tell you where the sword is going before the sword does.""Yes, sir.""Don't ca

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Seventy-Five: Fear and Grief

Lyra's POVI lit the candle with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking. The flame caught, thin and trembling, and I set it on the stone ledge of the outpost's eastern wall beside the others. Rowan's soldiers had left them there at dusk, a small, silent row of lights in the dark. Each one was for Ysolde.I hadn't known her. I had spoken to her exactly once, across a crowded hall, while she told me my story was too extraordinary to believe. She had been right to doubt me. And she had still changed her mind."You're going to freeze out here," Mira said gently from behind me."I'm fine.""You always say that." She wrapped her cloak around my shoulders and settled beside me on the cold stone. "You're also shaking.""That's not from the cold."Mira didn't answer. She simply took my hand, and that faint, steady warmth spread through my fingers, easing nothing and everything at the same time.Below us, the courtyard lay quiet. Somewhere past the hills, three days' ride away, a pack was burying i

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Seventy-Four: Choosing Sides

Cassian's POVBy the third morning, the outpost's great hall had become a battlefield with no blades.I stood at the head of the long table and watched the Alphas decide who they were willing to lose. Some argued in low, urgent voices. Others sat apart, staring into the fire, weighing the oaths they'd sworn against the families they'd sworn to protect.War did that. It didn't begin with armies. It began with people doing arithmetic."Two more riders left before dawn," Rowan murmured beside me. "Both headed for the capital.""To pledge to the Council?""Or to beg for terms. Hard to tell the difference.""It never is." I rubbed the back of my neck. "How many remain?""Six at the table, if you count Kael's one voice as a pack. Two of them favor us. Two lean toward the Council. The rest are watching which way the wind blows.""Then we have to make the wind blow."Rowan studied me. "You have a plan.""I have evidence." I glanced across the hall to where Lyra sat with Mira and Elowen, the

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Seventy-Three: Branded a Traitor

Lyra's POVThe parchment shook in my hands. It was a copy of the Council's declaration, torn from the capital's gates by the courier and carried three days through rain and mud. The black wax seal at the bottom was cracked, but I would have recognized it anywhere. I had seen the same mark pressed into every order in my mother's chronicle.I read it once. Then I read it again, slower, because the first time I couldn't believe the words were real."By decree of the High Council, the woman Lyra Ashthorne is declared an impostor, a forger of ancient lineage, and a traitor to the unity of the packs.""It gets worse," Mira said quietly beside me.“All persons are forbidden to shelter her. All Alphas are commanded to surrender her to the Council Citadel for judgment within ten days. Any who refuse shall be named enemies of the realm."I lowered the page. My hands had gone cold."Forged," I said. "He's calling me a forger.""Lyra—""The man who murdered my entire family is standing in front

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Seventy-Two: Mira's Legacy

Lyra's POVNobody spoke for a long time after Elowen's words.Mira sat motionless on the edge of the bed, staring at her own hands as though they belonged to a stranger. The silver glow beneath her sleeve had faded, but I couldn't stop seeing it."Say that again," she whispered at last. "Please. Slowly.""The Dominion kept a line of royal healers," Elowen said, her voice unsteady. "Women whose touch could mend what ordinary medicine could not. They served the queen, and some say the Heart itself chose them.""And one of them disappeared.""On the night of the fall. She was never found." Elowen lowered herself back into the chair, as if her legs had given out. "Most believed she died with the rest.""Maybe she didn't," Rowan said quietly. "Maybe she hid a child."Mira let out a thin, helpless laugh. "I'm not a princess, Rowan. I'm a girl who talks to dying plants.""Dying plants?" I asked. She flinched, as if she'd said too much."It's nothing," she said. "It's a silly thing.""Mira."
