Smoke and Mirrors

Emery's POV

The heavy oak doors of the royal council chamber slam shut behind me.

Valerius sits at his long desk, a brass magnifying glass in hand as he reviews trade agreements. He looks up, his golden eyes tracking the uneven rhythm of my steps across the rug.

I do not speak. Not right away.

I reach out and drop the severed Silver Moon rank pin onto the center of his papers. The metal hits the wood with a dull thud. Beside it, I smooth out the crumpled sheet, the dark red w

Shadows on the PerimeterEmery’s POVRain slams hard against the glass roof of the eastern armory. Water rushes down the stone gutters outside, creating a loud, continuous roar that drowns out the quiet crunch of our boots.Asa moves ahead, keeping low behind a stack of wooden shipping crates. Alyssa covers our rear, her hand resting on the grip of her sidearm. I check the tablet I swiped earlier one last time, keeping the screen dimmed so the light doesn't give us away to the guards on the upper levels. The blueprints show a small maintenance access shaft hidden behind the main tool racks. It goes down twenty feet straight into the old drainage vaults beneath the fortress.“Checkpoints are active," Asa whispers, pointing toward the heavy iron doors at the far end of the armory floor. Two Vanguard guards stand near the main scanner, rifles slung over their shoulders. "They aren't checking IDs. They're watching the doors very carefully… maybe expecting someone to come through with w

The Depth of the Trap Silas’s POV The silence in the cell is worse than the noise. Every time Noelle steps away to rest her voice, the ringing in my ears fills the dark. Blood has dried sticky and tight along my neck, flaking off when I move my jaw. My left ear feels completely blocked, like I am underwater, but the pain in my head has duller edges now. A steady, thumping ache behind my eyes. I rest my head back against the stone wall, taking shallow breaths. The air down here tastes like damp rust and wet earth. I look at my hands. The silver-suppressant chains around my wrists are still hot, eating into my skin with tiny, constant stings. My wolf is so faint I can barely feel his pulse in my chest, but the silver link on my right cuff is cracked. The metal snapped when I threw myself against the wall earlier, leaving a spiky, razor-sharp edge near the rivet. I flex my fingers. It hurts, but the pain keeps my head clear. Slowly, without making a sound against the iron floor,

Beside it, I smooth out the crumpled sheet, the dark red wax seal of the Vanguard command glistening under the desk lamp.Valerius sets his magnifying glass down. His thick fingers pick up the broken pin, turning it over slowly. He sniffs the air once, his jaw tightening as the bitter, metallic stench of liquid wolfsbane reaches his nose."Where did you find this?" he asks. His voice is dangerously quiet."The eastern drainage vault," I say, leaning my hands on the edge of the desk. "Matthias came to me at dawn. Silas went missing after the summit ass

The Architecture of LiesSilas’s POVMy head feels like someone slammed an iron pipe into the base of my skull.Cold, wet stone presses against my left cheek. I try to lift my arm, but a sudden, searing heat bites into my skin. Metal rings scrape against stone, sharp and loud in the dark.I open my eyes. Everything is a blurry mess of dim shadows and damp grey rock. The air smells like wet earth, rust, and burnt hair. It takes three hard blinks for my vision to focus on the heavy iron cuffs bolted around my wrists. Thick silver links trail back to a central ring set deep into the granite bedrock behind me.The silver burns. It sizzles against my bare skin, sending tiny sparks of white agony shooting straight up my forearms. My wolf is curled up deep in my chest, weak, quiet, and completely muted by the heavy metal.I drag myself up against the stone wall, my boots slipping on the slick floor. The room is small. Reinforced iron plates cover the old rock walls, sealed tight with heavy r

Whispers in the ShadowsEmery’s POVThe morning sky over the stronghold is a myriad of colors. Pink, purple, orange and cold gray stretch across the horizon as the sun clears the uneven mountaintops.I stand on the balcony of the high council quarters, leaning my forearms against the rail chilled by the morning frost. I relish the cold air that burns my lungs with every slow breath, cooling the heat within me. Down in the grand courtyard, the early light hits the wet paving stones, making them shine like polished steel. The delegates are already awake. Some are returning or just leaving for a run with their pack members, different colors of wolves scatter in all directions. Small groups of pack leaders gather near the central fountain, their dark coats pulled tight against the mountain draft. I can see the tension in the way they stand. Shoulders locked. Heads leaning close together. Eyes darting toward the upper windows every few seconds. Cassius’s speech from yesterday accomplished

A Budding DeceptionSilas's POVThe grand hall smells of polished mahogany, rich leather, and overpriced colognes.Huge glass chandeliers hang high above the central aisle, casting long shadows across the hundreds of regional leaders packed into the tier seating. I stand near the heavy iron doors on the western side of the room, my hand resting on my belt. My shoulder hurts where the wound from last week is still healing, but I keep my posture straight. At the center platform, King Valerius sits in the high iron chair. Emery stands two steps behind his right shoulder, dressed in a sleek charcoal dress with thin silver threading along the sleeves. She looks ethereal, still, and completely composed. Her full body has changed over the years, still ravishing in its fullness, there is a defined quality to her now that shows just how strong she is.Cassius walks up to the central podium, raising both hands to address the crowd."Honored Alphas, elders, and delegates," Cassius begins, his lou
