When I finish eating, I check on Micca who only finished eating half his pastrami sandwich before he fell asleep again. I retrieve the first aid kit from my room so I can stitch him up. Danica had tried to help but when she got too close he growled out angrily in his sleep. The cuts ran down his chest to his stomach, thighs, arms, and back. They're deep like someone wanted him dead. Ghost stands in front of Danica protectively. It makes me smile at her.
"What?" she asks.
"It's weird. That bitch hates everyone. She's protecting you from him," I inform her. Danica reaches for Ghost's ears and the crazy dog let her scratch them. "She doesn't even let me do that,"
"She's just a big baby," Danica coos making Ghost wag her tail.
"Traitor," I huff looking down at the dog. She growls at me. "Where are you from?"
"Eastend," she says looking around.
"What the fuck are you doing out here? Are you lost?" I ask, wrapping Micca's arm.
"Alpha Arthur killed my family. I was nine when I was brought here,"
"Who was your family?"
"My last name is Deverow," she answers. I pause for a moment.
"As in Mitch and Daniel Deverow?" I ask. She nods. "Fuck. I'm sorry about that. Our moms were friends from when they were kids,"
"Yeah," she says.
"How long have you been trying to get out of that place?"
"Since Arthur killed Gillian Luther,"
"That pussy didn't kill our alpha," Micca murmurs.
"That's what everyone says happened," I say.
"Southend killed him. It just wasn't Arthur who did it. It was the Warhead. Arthur would be really strong had he killed Gil and you even without your activation, can kill that idiot,"
"The Warhead?" I ask, standing up. "You mean the one Jay killed three weeks ago?"
"That's the one," he nods. I look back at her both of us understanding why it's so important for me to get the message to my brother. "Thanks. I owe you one,"
"You owe six now," I correct. He smiles laying back down.
We're sitting at the table when Miles walks in with Jay. He's always the first to burst through the door like an angry madman. He stares back at Danica with his arms crossed. He isn't happy to see her.
"Hi," Jay greets, coming over to me. He places a pizza box in front of me. I open it to see it's my favorite. "Who's this?"
"This is Danica Deverow," I say. "She's ours now,"
"I'm sorry. When did you start making decisions around here?" Miles asks. He places his hands on the table next to her. He's glaring at her from close range. A part of me doesn't like that he's so close to her. I'm not sure if it's because of him or because of her.
"Back the hell up," I stand up to get between them.
"This bitch was with the one that marked up your face yesterday," he points out, not taking his eyes off her. I place my fingertips on his chest and push back lightly.
"Now she's with me. Keep a distance,"
"Or what?" he asks amused.
"You don't want to know the answer to that," I glare. He smirks leaning into me.
"Careful, Princess. Your feelings are showing," he whispers before walking away. I kick my foot out hitting his heel. His leg crosses over and he stumbles tripping on his other foot. We all laugh when he turns to glare at me.
"Careful, Princess. Your feelings are showing," I shoot back. He stands up straight popping his neck like he's trying to hold back. I look over at my brother who just shakes his head.
"Danica Deverow," he says looking at the girl. "You can have the empty room next to D. You two are going to have to share that joined bathroom. Are you okay with that?"
"Yeah," I nod.
"Try not to make too much noise,"
"Something happened at school today," I say. He stops right before leaving the kitchen.
"You didn't kill her did you?"
"No. She wanted me to tell you that Arthur wants to meet with you," I inform him. He looks back at me with a smirk.
"Really? What did you say?"
"I told her to tell him that if he wanted something from you, that he should come get it himself," I shrug. He smiles proudly.
"Good girl. Stay away from that girl. Both of you. Tell me if she causes you any more trouble,"
"Jay," I call out stopping him from leaving again. "When were you going to tell me?"
"D. Apologizing is for the weak," he scoffs, without looking at me this time.
"What? That's not what I meant. I mean when were you going to tell me about the Warhead,"
He tenses up taking in a deep breath before letting it out slowly. "Enjoy these last four months, D,"
"I thought you wanted me like this forever," I say. This time he turns to face me all the way.
"I do. I wish you could but you're just as bad as I am. If not worse,"
"No one is worse than you," I scoff. He smirks.
"Not yet. Get some sleep girls. We're having a party tomorrow. You might want to sleep in late," he says leaving.
"Party?" I shout.
"Yeah, to welcome our new pup," he calls back. The sound of his boots stomping up the stairs echoes in the house. Miles and Micca are watching Bitten in the living room.
"Really?" I ask.
"What? Elena is hot," Micca shrugs. I roll my eyes, again not a good idea with my face like this.
"Come on. I'll show you your room," I wave Danica over. I hand her some pajamas and tell her where everything is. "Are all your things at their house?"
"Yeah. I should go by tomorrow,"
"We'll come with you," I say leaning on the doorway of her new room.
"I can't ask you to do that,"
"You didn't. I offered,"
"Thank you,"
"Shower, get comfortable. We get all the channels. The WIFI password is kingdaddy410,"
"Is that your brother's password?"
"Yeah, his birthday," I nod.
"Thanks," She laughs.
"I have an extra charger for your phone. It's plugged in by the sink," I let her know. She nods. I go to my room closing the door.
"For someone who doesn't care you have a hell of a way of showing it," Jay says walking into my room to lie next to me.
"They kicked her out for not assisting her beta,"
"Let me see," he says sitting up. I turn my body to face him completely. He pulls out his little flashlight flashing it in my eyes before gently touching the bruised parts of my face. "Just bruising nothing serious. About the girl,"
"If she is, it's better for her to be here with us. It'll be harder for her to get anything out. I don't think she's lying though," I stop him.
"Why?"
"She has nothing to lose. They killed her family,"
"They gave her a new one. Loyalty to those who give to you when you have nothing is a lot stronger than you think," he shakes his head.
"I'll chop her up and feed her to Ghost myself," I understand. He smiles falling back.
"What you said last night. I know. I felt that too," he says after a while. I look down at him. "I wanted so badly to keep you out of this. I remember that void. I get it,"
"Do you?"
"Yeah. I wish I could tell you it gets better, but it doesn't. It doesn't get worse. It's a standstill until you're activated,"
"What does that mean? Why are we like this?" I ask. He sighs heavily. We've been putting the conversation off for a long time. Mostly because he's not ready.
"Warheads are the perfect engineered soldiers. The most aggressive male and the most aggressive female. When she was impregnated they kept her under, feeding the fetus and corrupting its genetics until they got what they wanted. When they had what they wanted, they trained them. Programmed them as they did with the alphas. That's why we aren't categorized the same as the others. We aren't Alpha, Beta, Gamma, or Omega. We're all of them in one. We're weapons,"
"What does it mean for you to have taken the power of another Warhead and the alpha power in him?" I ask.
"It means I'm going to fuck shit up more than I already do," he smirks.
"You're an alpha now. That's going to do something to you,"
"I did this to be stronger. Me, an alpha. You're funny," he scoffs, sitting up.
"You can make real change. We both know this system is flawed. There's only you and Arthur left in the City. He's a piece of shit,"
"I'm no better than him. I don't give a fuck. There isn't a lesser evil here," he shrugs. I sigh looking over at him as he walks over to my door. "It would be funny though. Alpha Jaykob Tyler,"
"Get out you, dick," I shove him.
"And people say you don't have a sense of humor," he laughs sarcastically.
I throw my pillow in his direction. He moves out of the way as he runs away. The pillow hits Miles's door across from my own. Miles opens the door and picks it up. The sound of Jay's door slamming shut and his laughter echoing at the other side of the hall makes him smile.
"Lose something?" he asks. I get up to take it.
"Thank you," I say when I toss it on my bed.
"You should smile more. It's not right for someone as pretty as you to be sad all the time,"
I hadn't realized I had been smiling but that made me stop. I look around the hall a little weirded out and step back into my room. He laughs when I shut the door in his face.
"Freak," I say locking it.
Jayk "How much of that did you hear?" Lydia sighs as she pushes herself off the floormat. "All of it," I answer honestly. "She's right you know. We have literally anything you can think of here at the moment," "Best pre-workouts," she holds up her water bottle. "You were just going to leave?" I ask. "Yes," she gives me the same honesty. "I would rather go feral than stay here and watch your fuckery," "I don't want that for you," her honesty always hurts, but I don't know how to talk to her anymore. Not without hurting her feelings. "Now that you're the alpha, what you want is the only thing that matters, huh?" she sits on the bench behind her. No matter what I say to her, even if I sugarcoat it for her, it doesn't change a thing. "What you feel for me is nothing compared to what a mate bond feels like," I sit across from her. "You can love someone with you
Lydia is sitting in the middle of the gym alone with a fifty-pound weight on her chest while she does sit-ups. The lights are off and I can hear Watch The World Burn from her headset as she breathes out heavily every time she lifts her body. I've never been this upset about anything and I'm not going to pretend I know what she's going through. One thing I do know is that I don't want her to go away. She practically raised me. I don't know what to offer her or what to say that would be enough for her to stop thinking about running away. Lydia loved my brother before he became anything. I don't think she understands that Jayk isn't with those girls because he loves them. Something inside of him broke when Danica rejected him. I doubt my brother is ever going to love anyone ever again and he doesn't know how to explain that to her. "You have a very loud presence," she pants but doesn't stop. I make my way over to her and take the heads
My brother is sitting at the breakfast table with Every, Lucille, and Sloane. All of them are fussing over him and talking to one another like they're best friends. There is no sign of Leelie or Lydia. It's just the eight of us. Ashton and Micca bring out the breakfast and set it in the center of the table. "What the fuck?" Miles whispers when he takes a seat to my right. Micca sits to my left. "I don't know," I shrug and reach for a biscuit. Micca hands me the fried potatoes and Miles pours the buttermilk gravy. "Good morning, guys," Lucille finally greets us. Jayk and others look up at me. "I'm sure it is," Ashton sits next to Micca. We laugh when Jayk rolls his eyes. "Will Lie and Lydia be joining us this morning, sir?" "Nah, they're at the Beta house," Jayk takes a bite out of his pancakes. He sets his fork down and stares at me. It makes me a little uncomfortable, but I don't say anything. We've been fighting over
Jayk "What do you want?" he asks me. "Leelie almost died last week," I inform him. He sits back. "You're not like us, Jet. You don't know what it's like to have a ticking time bomb inside of you. One that goes off when you least expect it. It's not easy being on our own," I clear the itch in my throat. "Having a mate after years of being alone is taxing," "Is that why you killed Dani?" he sneers. "Yes," I nod. "Danica's death is my fault. I'm new to this alpha shit. I didn't know the power of a command until just recently. I wanted her to be something she could never be. The closer we got, the more she hated me for putting a responsibility she wasn't prepared for on her shoulders. It wasn't all hate. We had our moments and it's those small instances that make me miss her the most. Did you know that Arthur compelled her to father his heir?" "No," he shakes his head. "He convinced her that it
Jayk Seeing Dagmar upset the way she is, isn't easy. I underestimated the power I have over her and now I get why the alphas lost control of the very things they created. It was why I had put the rules in place. They gave me a sense of control. I had promised myself and my sister that I wouldn't let this get to me, but it's already started to bleed into everything we've been working for. I don't know how to fix this and now that Dagmar is home, everyone seems to be more at ease. "Jayk?" Micca walks in our makshift office space and sits in Miles's chair across from me. "What's up?" I say giving him my attention. He scratches the back of his head nervously. Micca has never been a man of many words. When it comes to anything regarding our business, he lets his work do the talking for him. It's why I love having him around. He's always been eager to prove that he deserves Dagmar. "I didn't think thi
"What did you do to him?" Jayk asks as the two of us watch Micca reading a book down by the lake behind Sloane's house. It took him a while to calm down, but once he did the emptiness slowly started to drift away and he slept for a good six hours. "Where is Sloane?" I shoot right back. He grins and turns around to walk back inside. I follow. "Miles said you had news?" "Lucille will be moving into the cotton farms as planned. Since you and Miles are going to be going to school in that region anyway, I was thinking of leaving you in charge of the entire vicinity," "And Micca," I add. He sighs. "You're letting Micca stay with me. He's my mate," "He's an essential part of my pack," "We all are, but Micca belongs to me," I remind him. "I knew you were going to be difficult about this," "Jayk-" "I can't just let him stay in one place, Mars," "Then no," I shake my h
