I had just finished doing the ward rounds for the morning and had sunk into my office chair, ready for my hot cup of tea, but suddenly, I didn't feel like taking anything anymore.
The walls of my stomach felt stiff, leaving me wondering if I truly had to go to the restroom again barely two hours after the last time I went.
But then, I was waiting for a call for one of my patients, and I had a spreadsheet to quickly inspect.
Deciding on just water, I settled in to work on my computer.
Not too long after, a quick knock broke against my door. Then, Claire came in with her hands hanging like they normally would when there was an emergency.
There was this sense of urgency in her expression that made me almost grab my lab coat from the hanger in readiness to attend whatever medical emergency it could be.
"There's someone asking to see you," she dropped finally, causing me to sit back in my chair disappointedly.
"C'mon Claire. You're not new to this job. You know my schedule and you know very well that I don't take visitors till afternoon."
"I know sir. It's just this visitor is Eddison Langford and I know you'd rather not send him away," Claire said finally, her eyes plopping from side to side.
"Send him in," I said in a low tone, not bearing to look at my secretary's face again. Even the laws bend when it needs to.
"Eddison Langford," I called out, as soon as his figure appeared out of the door.
"Dr. Connor. Nice to see you again," he responded, causing a hard lump to form in my throat.
Eddy had not yet apologized for proposing that unreasonable suggestion between me and his wife during the family event, and since then, we haven't really been on the best of terms.
The last time we met was the last time we spoke about allowing Lola to go to a baking school.
So far, everything has been sailing smoothly, except my relationship with him. It was still rocky. He might not admit it, and I won't be the first to either.
Not to lie, it was a surprise of concern that he was right inside my office this early.
"It's been long indeed. How is work at the office?" I replied, trying as much as I could to sound cheerful — a mask I knew I always need to wear around people, especially Eddy.
"Work is great as usual. I give my all to the company, as always."
Eddy always had his way with the final words.
"Uuhm...,how is the family?" I asked, fighting the urge to ask him to go straight to the point because I had work to do this morning and no mental strength to deal with his attitude.
"Family is good. You should try to build one, you know. It is a great thing to have."
"Yes. I am working towards it," I replied, holding it down with all of my might.
"Well, that is not why I am here," he said, letting himself into one of the visitors' seats.
I adjusted in my position, continuing to stare steadily at him.
I didn't notice the brown envelope he had trapped between his fingers when he walked in until he slapped it hard on the table, immediately pushing it towards me.
"What does it contain?" I asked as I picked it up with an impatient curiosity and proceeded to tear it open. It was light, I couldn't guess its content until I dug into it to retrieve a couple of printed pictures.
Looking from one picture to the other, I wondered how it happened and how Eddy was able to get hold of them.
Carefully, I looked at the pictures again, running my fingers through my hair in utter confusion on what to say.
More than how strained my thoughts were on what was before me, my fists clenched hard to the frustration that was insistently building up in my chest.
My throat itched with dryness and the more I stared at the images, the more I felt the urge to find out everything I could about the man, especially why he had to pull such a stunt at this crucial time.
Eddy just sat still, his hands folded beneath his jaw, watching me leap from one emotion outburst to the other.
"So, you would agree with me now that Lola deserved every sh*t I have ever dished her. Imagine that? She has no freaking respect for me outside, and I'm supposed to worship at her feet?" Eddy thundered, grabbing the edge of the table as if trying to contain her anger.
"Eddy, I think..."
"I won't take any more word from you in her favour. I refuse to hear it," Eddy cut me off before I even spoke what I thought.
As much as I didn't think that was enough reason for pictures like that to be taken, I knew I had to say something to save the moment, at least, "Maybe, this could be a misunderstanding."
Eddy shot me a hard glance of disgust like I had spat right into his left eye.
"Maybe we could give Lola a chance to explain herself. We can't just make conclusions based on a couple pictures," I forced myself to finish.
I watched Eddy's eyes narrow, the way a business man would while looking at the losses from a stock they had trusted enough to bulk buy.
"You know what, Connor?" I adjusted forward in response. "I don't know how much you love my wife to want to support her even when her sins are staring you right in the face."
I swallowed.
"Eddy, please stop! I am not going to go back and forth with you again on this."
"Then be reasonable, man! Be honorable at least. Or maybe you could spare yourself some form of respect!" he thundered, slamming his big palms hard on the table, its contents rattling to the pressure.
I stared hard at him, guilt and pride pushing searing painfully through my chest.
"I didn't come here today to seek permission from you on how to handle this. I am here because of the goodwill our friendship had sprouted."
"Eddy!"
"Stay still, man. Do not distract me. I listened to you when you asked me to allow Lola to fly with new wings. Now, I have every damn reason to clip them entirely off and I expect you to listen to me on that."
"Eddy..."
Without as much as a last glance, he stood up and stormed out of the door.
I knew the line had been drawn.

LOLAStanding in line with the others, we waited for chef Clementine as he inspected our designs one after the other."It looks a bit too...I wouldn't say shabby. Maybe, you could concentrate more next time.""Uuuhm...I don't know, but something is definitely wrong with this.""Okay. Great job."I listened to his comments on the works before mine, and it made me wonder what exactly he would say to me.I had been out of it the entire time I designed, my cuttings weren't straight and my line works were just as messy. A part of my icing design was shaky, on the edge of falling.I knew very well why I had turned out like that, and he knew too, but he is probably going to brush it off.I held my breath when he approached mine.Adjusting his apron, he tilted his head to look at my own designed cake sitting pathetically in front of me.My fingers folded inwards beside me."Hmmm...what is your name again?" he asked, but it was very obvious he was putting up an act. He had asked me my name whi
LOLAMy stomach grumbled from not having anything to eat since last night.I wasn't too comfortable to eat from Connor's, and I was too anxious to eat before leaving the house.I thought about ordering a take out, but then, the consequences that would come from Eddy checking my order description and his demeaning words on my body size of two years made me lose my appetite."F*ck it!" I cussed against my breath, making a mental note to visit the closest bakery as soon as I could get a break from the classes."The chef is unusually late today," a blonde woman with a disturbingly heavy make-up sitting in front of me spoke, forcing me to check my own time only to find out that we had been sitting for over an hour waiting for the first lesson of the day.My stomach grumbled more and louder, forcing the skinny woman sitting beside me to give me a dead ass scrutinizing look."I'm sorry. I skipped breakfast," I muttered, staring apologetically in her direction. In response, she shook her head
LOLAAs Freddy began to walk away, I followed him, my chest pounding uncontrollably in my chest. We walked up the stairs until we were right on the second floor with my room a couple steps in front. He turned to face me. Despite the urge to fall on my knees and try to plead my way out of the terrible act of listening to his conversation with his father, I tried to maintain a straight expression.Without a single word, he stared me down like he too was finding it difficult to come up with a first word, or maybe, he was contemplating on how best to rebuke me.I couldn't stare him back in the eyes, maybe I would have been able to tell what his thoughts were.Exhaling sharply, he turned and began walking up the stairs.I thought about heading straight for my room, but instead, I followed him."Stop, Freddy. Maybe we could talk."He didn't reply, just kept going. He got to his room and let himself in, banging the door right in my face."Freddy! I am sorry for listening to your conversation
LOLAIt was an unusually chilly morning as I rode down town, my heart thumping heavily, every little sound causing me to jerk over.I didn't know how it happened, but the truth remains that it happened.I wasn't supposed to stay out last night, especially without informing Eddy. The only few times I had stayed out since my marriage were during my visits to my parents, which had only happened twice in two years — once with Eddy's permission, the other without and I paid dearly for it.Pulling into the compound, my stomach twisted painfully as I packed well in the garage. It took a long while before I found the courage to get out of the car. When I finally did, my legs felt too weak to walk the distance to the house.Earlier, I had rehearsed questions Eddy could possibly ask me, and the most appropriate replies I should give. I haven't even gone in, yet my hands were already shaky behind me.I almost tripped when my phone started to vibrate inside my bag. Sighing, I dug it out with trem
CONNORA warmth, sudden and familiar, hit my face, forcing me to turn over.Blindly, I searched around my lower body for the sheets, and when I had grabbed it, I tried pulling it over my shoulders, but the other end of it wouldn't bulge.Groaning, I stretched against the bed, my knuckles colliding mercilessly with the bedframe to produce a striking sound. The pain spread mercilessly across my arm, forcing me to swallow the hard ball of urge to change my bed to a more modern style. With my eyes still shut, I tried rolling over to the other side of the bed, but crashed against an obstruction. My brain processed it quickly, noting that I wasn't alone on the bed, but before I could make out who the company was and why they were there, I was distracted by a heaviness around my waist. It was so distinct and full, my eyes flung open, my fingers working frantically to push the sheets away from my body, my thoughts roaming hard, fearing the worst possible outcome. My breathing dropped. My body
LOLAI swallowed, closing my eyes to the pain of the moment suddenly ending because of the same thing I had feared.I was back in my room - the room I shared with Eddy, and I was sitting n*ked on the toilet seat, my face pressed hard against my palms when I remembered that I had forgotten my flops
LOLAMy feet hurried across the corridor, past the first room, then the second, and I was standing in front of Eddy's room.My heart was beating faster than it was while I waited for my fate at the breakfast table a while back. Not because I wanted my brother-in-law to touch me again under my husb
LOLAMy fingers felt numb around the glass. I had been holding it for the past thirty minutes, not bothering to taste its content."Stand close to the bar. Don't follow me around."I was standing close to the bar, just overlooking the show in front of me.The room was all golden lights, and string
Bulky. Too tight. Top part too revealing. To crown it all, I detested red for clothes, but the fitting assistant had called it "stunning" and Eddy had nodded in agreement. Now, standing in the quiet living room of our home in Malibu in that same dress, my body feeling not like mine, I waited for Ed
