Chapter 434

Author: Cloud Drop
Archer thought about calling Aria to ask what she was up to, but after picking up his phone, he set it back down.

He remembered how strange she’d been the day before. While he was at the office, he’d called the hotel room to check on her, but no one answered. When he finally got her on her cell, she admitted she’d gone out alone again. When he asked where she was, she brushed him off with some vague excuse. Even Christina had no idea what she was really doing.

Mysterious. Too mysterious. And he had no clue what she was hiding.

It took nearly an hour for the car to reach the restaurant.

When Archer stepped out, he saw Aria standing at the entrance in a knee-length dress with a light jacket draped over her shoulders. Her silky hair fell down her back, and the moment she spotted him, her dark, clear eyes lit up. She gave him a soft, almost shy smile—one filled with nothing but affection.

For a second, Archer froze. That pure focus in her gaze… the way it held only him… it made it imp

It wasn’t until the night wind brushed past her that Kandice seemed to wake from her daze, realizing she was already standing outside the hotel.Archer coldly tossed her suitcase down the steps. It bumped and skidded against the stone until it lay there awkwardly—undignified. Kandice felt just as humiliated as that suitcase looked. She finally found her voice. “Archer, can—”“Stop calling me ‘Archer.’ We’re not that close,” he cut in, his tone flat and icy. “Just because Grace told you to doesn’t mean you should. We’ve only met once or twice. Where exactly do you get this inflated sense of importance? In front of Aria, I held back from being too blunt.”His gaze sharpened. “But tell me, Miss Jackson—have you been flattering yourself a bit too much? Let me make this clear: even if Aria weren’t here tonight, and you stood outside my door stark naked, I’d still toss you out onto the street.”Kandice froze, blindsided. In her mind, Archer had always been cold, yes—but she’d chalked

Kandice was feeling smug. She was certain that showing up like this—throwing herself into his path—would be impossible for him to resist. Besides, she’d traveled all the way here, a stranger in a foreign place. If she had nowhere to stay, surely Archer wouldn’t just turn her away… would he?Archer only gave a faint smile, then took Aria by the hand and walked to the front desk. “How many rooms do you have left?” he asked. It wasn’t exactly peak tourist season, but the city was still crowded. After checking, the receptionist said there were only two suites and one double room left.“I’ll take all three,” Archer said, handing over his card without hesitation. While the paperwork was being processed, Kandice’s cheeks flushed. “Archer, you don’t have to be so polite,” she said softly. He gave a short, cold laugh. “I’m not being polite. As you can see, the hotel’s full. I suggest you find somewhere else to stay.”“Archer, didn’t—” She cut herself off, stunned. She’d assumed he w

The car pulled up in front of the hotel. Archer helped Aria out, his hand protective at her back. He held her left hand as they walked, his thumb brushing over the ring on her finger.“Archer,” a soft, syrupy voice called out the moment they stepped through the hotel doors. The coy sweetness in it made goosebumps prickle along Aria’s skin. She turned her head to see Candice standing there, dressed in a trench coat over a silk knee-length dress, high heels clicking against the polished floor. Elegant. Beautiful. But Aria’s first thought was: In France? On these cobblestone streets? In heels? She must hate her feet.Archer didn’t slow. He kept hold of Aria’s hand and walked right past as if he hadn’t heard the call—his eyes forward, not even sparing Kandice a glance. It was as though she didn’t exist. He headed straight for the elevators.“Archer,” Candice called again, and this time she hurried forward, stepping directly into his path.“I heard you were on a business trip,” she sa

Tears trembled in Aria’s eyes before spilling over again. When she thought about their life together—maybe fifty, sixty years at most—it felt far too short. Nowhere near enough.“Then promise me,” she murmured, lowering her head. She lifted his hand, their fingers still intertwined, and pressed a flurry of soft kisses to the elegant lines of his knuckles. “Promise you’ll love me for a lifetime, spoil me for a lifetime.” Her tears slid down, warm against his skin. She had never imagined that one day she could love someone so fiercely, so completely, that she wouldn’t even know how to love him enough. Afraid to give too little, she only wanted to give more—more love, more care, more of herself.Aria had no particular faith, but here in the solemn quiet of the Catholic church, with its ornate ceiling frescoes overhead and the gentle, benevolent gaze of the Virgin Mary above the altar, she sank into a pew. She clasped her hands, closed her eyes, and prayed for them to spend their lives

“I want her in my arms for the rest of my life,” Archer said, his voice low but unwavering. “I want her with me for every birthday, every holiday—every minute and every second I’m alive. I want her standing behind me, under my protection, never again hurt, never again made to suffer.”“That girl’s name is Aria Jackson.”He paused, his dark eyes locking on hers. “Aria… will you marry me?”Aria’s throat tightened until she couldn’t speak. She had never known—never even imagined—that he had loved her for this long. What kind of man loves a woman so deeply, for so many years, without ever wavering? What kind of man works quietly, patiently, doing everything in his power just for the chance to be with her one day?It was as if he had been weaving a net, thread by fine thread, expanding it wider and wider until it was big enough to draw her back to him.If it had been anyone else, the thought might have frightened her. But because it was Archer, she only felt an overwhelming sense of i

“What is—?” Aria began, startled, but before she could finish, Archer was already leading her inside the church. It was empty, the long rows of pews stretching out beneath the solemn gaze of the Virgin Mary. The space felt vast, still, and almost sacred. He didn’t stop until they reached the very front. When he turned to face her, his expression was so serious that the already sharp lines of his face seemed even more commanding.“I insisted on bringing you out tonight because I thought maybe you’d forgotten today was my birthday,” he said. “But the truth is, I already prepared my own birthday gift.”Aria’s breath caught. Somewhere deep down, she already sensed what he was about to do—what he wanted to say.Yes.They might already have a marriage certificate, but they’d skipped so many steps. The dating. The proposal. She froze as he reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small, elegant box. Her heart pounded, but then she noticed—he actually looked more nervous than sh
