1 In The Begining

***The choice of Iraq was simply because it was easier, for me, to use actual places, and names, when refering to the past. Especially since All of the 'current' places are, for the most part, real. There was no malice intended on the choice of location. Some of the places, and references, will come up later.***

When the Moon Goddess made her creations Lycans were at the top. They were regarded as kings and queens, the guardians, they were to keep the rest of her creations safe. For centuries they protected Selene’s creations from human hunters, to other creatures, to even protecting them from themselves. The Lycans prevented wars, they negotiated treaties, they were the high court for all of the Moon Goddesses creations. To be able to complete their tasks Lycans were given more strength than a normal werewolf, their senses were sharper, their wolf counterpart was double the size of the rest of the werewolf community. An omega Lycan was created to be stronger, faster, more sensitive, than an Alpha werewolf. 

No one really knows when the first Lycan was created, there are thoughts that they were created after everything else. Selene had tried to give autonomy to each species, but at some point, she got tired of the fighting, both between species and amongst themselves, which prompted her to create the guardians. There was peace throughout all of the kingdoms, that worshiped the Moon Goddess, for almost a millennia, then Alpha Kushim happened. 

As the story goes, Alpha Kushim was born sometime around 3,400 BCE, dates differ depending on who you ask, in Ancient Uruk, which is now in the area of what we call Iraq. Kushim was not happy with his mate, she was the high warrior from Nippur. She was born an omega, and worked her way up the warrior ranks. Kushim was appalled that he would be paired with someone from the lowest station, it didn’t matter to him that she had worked so hard to work her way up, or that an omega was even able to achieve the rank of top warrior. Kushim rejected her. Selene was greatly disappointed in Kushim’s decision, but gave the sweet Andra a second chance mate and refused to allow Kushim any happiness. Selene cursed him to never have an heir, to never know true love, and to feel the pain of rejection every time Andra was elated. 

Andra’s second chance mate was the reigning King of Lycans, Anu, of Eridu. Anu was a fair ruler, he sat with his people and listened to their concerns, he encouraged them to bring their problems to the palace and did everything he could to maintain peace. Kushim tried to save his lineage, he went to Eridu to talk to Andra before her coronation. When Andra refused to take Kushim back he unalived her, using a spear that was dipped in a concentrated oil made of wolfsbane. This was the start of the 2,000 year war between werewolves and Lycans. There are a lot of missing texts, decades and centuries of knowledge lost. The city of Alexandria was originally a Lycan kingdom, according to what has been passed down, all of the Lycan and werewolf history was kept there. When the city fell, and the library burned, in 619CE we lost everything. What we do know is from the scholars that worked in the library and did their best to recreate the stories they had read. So... basically we had a bunch of old men trying to retell what they remembered with some made up shat smeared in there. 

So, over the years of the war the Lycans were almost wiped out. Only a handful of royal families escaped, and it was estimated that a couple thousand ranked, and unranked, Lycans went into hiding. Occasionally the royal families would come out to try and remind the species that Selene was still watching them, and that if needed the Lycans would help any who asked.

Over the centuries the number of Lycans has dwindled to a point that some thought they were extinct. Around 1900 5 royal families came out of hiding, along with their loyal subjects. The royals can trace their bloodlines all the way back to Anu and Andra. It is now estimated that there are a few hundred thousand Lycans in the world, most of them living in the royal family's packs. Some, that have been mated to werewolves, or witches, or even humans, live outside the kingdom walls. A few broke off to create their own packs, Lycan Alphas leading Weres. 

Because so few of Selene's precious guardians are left, she handpicks a random Lycan every generation to become a new royal. This chosen royal is automatically mated to one of the royal families, and the chosen royal is regarded in the same way as Selene herself. 

So, thinking about our hierarchy it would be Selene at the top, then the King and Queen of all Lycans, or high king and queen, then the other 4 royal families, then the ranks as per usual. There hasn’t been a high queen chosen since before the Lycans return, once she’s born, we wait for the reincarnation of Selene. The prophecy is that a descendant of the first chosen high queen will be the reincarnation of Selene. Selene is supposed to be born within 3 generations of the high queen's birth. And that’s where my story begins. The story of my life as the chosen Lycan Queen, a title I never wanted, never asked for, and sure as h3ll will do my damnedest not to be in that roll.
