I yearned for the problems I had before I found out my mate was her, the werewolf girl who nearly killed me.

I'd thought my other problems were the worst I had until she came into my life.

My father might have thought this was some twisted game he could play with me, pairing me with the woman who nearly killed me to be bred to carry my future children. But one thing was certain: I would never touch that girl, let alone bed her. And the thought alone made my heart skip as the bond tugged in my chest. That was a lie. I wanted her as much as I wanted her gone from my life.

I fought hard against the pleasurable thoughts my Lycan, and the bond, kept putting in my head. Why should I be thinking of laying with the same kind that murdered my brother?

My brother was the one meant to take the throne. Since a very young age, he'd been taught and raised to believe he would take after my father. But death took him from us. No matter how many people we killed in revenge for his death, we never found his killer.

Rosewyn's face surfaced in my mind, and my chest tightened with a prickle of discomfort. This was a huge sign of weakness — one that, if my father discovered, I didn't want to imagine what he'd do.

Pushing away those disturbing thoughts, I forced a smile onto my face and stepped into the tea room, where my mother, the Blackthorne Queen, sat sipping tea with her friends.

"Mother," I said, walking towards her. She sat on a beautiful green sofa, laughing at something her friend had said. When she noticed me, she lifted her head, and the smile on her face broadened.

"Lucian." She lowered her teacup onto the small table, and as I leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek, her perfume drifted into my nostrils.

When I pulled back, she was still smiling. "Congratulations on your breeder mate."

"Mother."

"Now I have high hopes of expecting grandchildren."

I didn't want to continue this conversation. "When did you return?"

"Last night," she answered. "I would have stayed longer than usual, but I came the moment the messenger informed me of the girl. Rosewyn, is it?"

My mother had no idea of the circumstances surrounding Rosewyn — that the girl had tried to kill me. If she had known, that smile would have vanished, replaced by concern.

"Is she beautiful? I hope to have beautiful grandchildren."

"Yes, she is." Rosewyn's beauty was something I never had to second-guess. It was extraordinary, out of this world.

"When is the binding ceremony?"

"The binding ceremony." How had I forgotten there would be a binding ceremony between me and Rosewyn so soon? It would bind her to me like a ritual until her death,  she wouldn't be able to leave. The law existed for cases where breeders tried to escape after falling pregnant. No matter where they run to, they wouldn't be able to rest as they would seek their way back to us. Even the binding allows one to locate the breeder. And if Rosewyn was bound to me, she could never marry or lie with another male unless she wanted death for herself.

I despised the law and everything behind it.

Long ago, my mother and grandfather had built the idea of a new empire, one where Lycans ruled at the very top of power. Now, watching things grow twisted and worse by the day, I often wondered if my mother regretted that decision.

My brother was born during the war between the Lycans and the werewolves. Two years after my father won that war and claimed the throne, my mother gave birth to me. The two of us fell sick so often that the healers predicted we'd both die young.

Terrified he'd be left without a son to succeed him, my father tried for another child with my mother. But she could no longer bear one, and with rumors spreading that Lycan birth rates were dropping lower every year, he took another woman. From her, he began keeping breeders.

"We haven't fixed a date yet," I said.

My mother's friend started to say something, and she turned to listen.

"Alright, then. I came to welcome you home. I'm leaving now."

"Come by later. I have something important to discuss with you."

I nodded, turned, and left the room. Remembering the paperwork waiting for me, I started back toward my quarters when a small voice came from behind.

"Prince Lucian."

I turned slowly, frowning when I saw Rosewyn standing there. But she looked different — her lashes wet, as if she'd been crying, her cheeks flushed a deep pink.

Have you been crying? I wanted to ask, but with guards nearby, guards who reported straight back to my father — a question like that would raise suspicion. He'd want to know why I cared about a breeder's tears. And that was dangerous, because I couldn't let him find out Rosewyn was my mate.

Instead, I asked, "What is it?"

"Her royal highness, Princess Sylvia, requests you visit her at the library at the seventh bell."

"Seventh bell?" I frowned. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"I was looking for you. I couldn't find you."

"You couldn't find him? Or you're intentionally testing my patience limit" A familiar voice cut in, and when I turned, Sylvia was walking towards me, a deep frown on her face, her eyes fixed on Rosewyn.

  • Seven Ways To Kill Your Lycan Mate   List of people I wanted dead

I slowly turned around as commanded, facing the closed door. I didn't even process the sting of claws slicing through my clothes and skin until it did. The shock and pain of it dropped me to my knees instantly.I started to turn around, gritting my teeth in rage when another strike came down on me."Ah!" I cried, the tray falling from my hand onto the floor. This enraged Sylvia, causing her to yank my hair backward, twirling me around forcefully to face her. I clenched my jaw against the pain, fighting through the thoughts telling me to fight back. But she was a Lycan, and more powerful than I was. I forced back tears burning through my eyes as the pain sliced deep through my skin."Please," I murmured."You know one thing I do not tolerate is disobedient breeders," Sylvia said, her eyes eerily calm. "Didn't the other breeders warn you about me?""I'm sorry.""You're sorry?" She cocked her head, her eyes narrowing at the broken ceramic cup lying on the floor. "What made you late?""I…

He towered over me, his face hard with dangerous brutality. His eyes were cold and feral, the deadliness palpable in them. The more he looked at me, the more I could feel the rage in his gaze. He looked at me like he wanted to cross the distance and strangle me to death. He was the Lycan Prince — King Malric's executioner. My eyes lowered to his hands, to the thick veins bulging against his skin. The same hands had drenched in the blood of the innocent so deeply that no amount of clean water could wash away the stain. I stared at the same hands that had tortured and murdered my people to death.Terror welled inside me at the memory of my dead family. I gasped, unable to handle the shock. Before I could react, he was already advancing on me. I quickly moved to the side, grabbing whatever my hands could reach. When I looked, I was holding a small bread knife."Do not come any closer," I warned."Is this what you have to offer?" he asked, staring at me for a moment. "You think this would

The guards laid me on the bed, and a short woman who looked to be in her mid-forties poured a potion down my throat.Nausea hit instantly, and I gripped my stomach as whatever they'd forced down my throat coiled and rolled inside me. I quivered, nearly falling from the bed. When I turned, I made out two large men standing at the far side of the wall. Their eyes were cold as they looked down at me.I tore my gaze away from them, staring at the ceiling as I tried to make sense of everything that had happened to me that day.I should have been crying, but the tears wouldn't come.Resignation and hopelessness had dug deep into me since the moment I watched my sister die and Kieran dragged away. After watching most of the people I loved die, I knew my turn to suffer waited around the corner. My father had died by execution, tortured for information they wanted from him.My mother had tried to protect him, and they killed her

The days had slowly bled into each other, and the only proof that time was passing at all was the single small window near the ceiling, letting in slivers of light I'd learned to count by. I sat close to the wall, knees pulled to my chest, the pain at the back of my head throbbing hard where the soldier had struck me. I could barely sleep through the days I spent in that cell. I wasn't the only one there. Five others shared the space with me — two males, three females. One of the females was human; the rest were werewolves like me. Blood and dirt marred their skin, a record of however many days they'd spent in this cell waiting for judgment day, when they'd be killed. I shivered. Some of them had been beaten beyond recognition, faces swollen and split open. The prisoners were no more than thirty, if that. One of them, a girl with hollow eyes, finally asked why I was here. "I nearly killed the crowned prince," I said. "Lucian." Gasps rippled through the cell. Wide eyes turned to

  • Seven Ways To Kill Your Lycan Mate   Penalty is death

The first thing my scholars taught me, the moment I learned to speak, was that showing mercy could get a Lycan killed just as quickly. It was only after I was attacked that I understood how deep those lessons ran. The werewolves despised us just as much as we hated their kind. The attack on me came suddenly while I was on patrol, marking territory as I always did with the soldiers. There were eight of them, all armed with silver blades because silver was the only thing their kind had ever been able to use against us.I killed three before I felt the first cut. The fourth tore my shoulder open to the bone, and after that, everything else blurred. When it was over, I was on my knees losing a lot of blood. The silver was already crawling through me, cold and slow, shutting my shift down muscle by muscle until I couldn't shift to my Lycan form to defend myself. I remember counting my own heartbeats to keep them honest. And then suddenly, the arrow came, moving through me underneath my c
