"I— I'm sorry but I can't."
Gavin stopped in his tracks, recalculating his steps. He stepped back and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was way too strong," he scratched the back of his neck, embarrassment engulfing him."I should not have. I think I'll leave." He turned to leave but she stopped him. "It's okay, I enjoyed today.""Me too, but I really should leave." Elena shrugged off his jacket and handed it to him. It was a lot bigger than her so it swallowed her. "Here," Gavin took his jacket and put it on."Thank you for tonight, and the jacket, " Elena said, trying to lighten the mood."I should be thanking you. It's been so long since I felt this normal,"Elena wanted to ask him what he meant but he had already begun walking off. Once more her thoughts drifted to Marcus and he had driven off that night after giving her a bundle of dollars. As she thought of it, her phone rang. It was Marcus. She was so shocked she watched it ring for a few seconds before picking it up."Hello?""Elena," Marcus said, his voice sending chills down her spine."Yes?""You're up." He stated. Elena did not know what to say to that, so she just waited for him to say something else but it was eerily quiet for a while till she decided to speak up."Are you— are you done with work?""Yes. I just rounded off my last meeting. I wanted to come pick you up from work but I guess you are already home. You are at home, right?" Elena felt her pulse quicken up a bit, since when did he care?"Yes. Yes. I just decided to come out for some fresh air." Marcus was quiet again, it made Elena angry, she did not know what he was thinking most of the time."Marcus? Are you still there?" Elena asked after a long moment of silence."You should not stay outside so late. It's dangerous, maybe you should look into houses with a balcony. I never liked your apartment complex anyways," with that remark he hung up.Elena was shocked, she stood still for a few seconds trying to understand the complex human that was Marcus but she gave up. Could it be that he cared about her? And was he serious about getting her an apartment with a balcony?Elena made her way up her apartment, the stairs creaking with every step she took. If Marcus was willing to pay for a new apartment would she take it? She was already digging herself into so much debt to this man that she could not imagine asking him for more. Her phone buzzed two times with two different notifications. One from Marcus and one for Gavin. She clicked on Gavin's own instantly, 'Got home safe ;) sorry about today. I hope we can meet up soon. Goodnight :)And then she opened Marcus's own, 'Take the day off tomorrow, we are going out.'Elena stared at the two messages. What was she going to do now?Elena woke up the next morning exhausted. She had slept off on her couch. She groaned in exhaustion knowing her back would pay for it for the rest of the day.She got around her daily routine. Her mind replayed the events of last night, her enjoying Gavin's company and almost forgetting about Marcus's existence entirely. Then Marcus surprised her by calling to check up on get then announcing an outing today. She could not also forget staring at Gavin's message all night, thinking about how he was the perfect man for her.As she enjoyed her breakfast she could not help but wonder what it would be like to be dating Gavin instead. Would he be so cold? Would he be so quiet and in his headspace most of the time? Would he call her beautiful every day?Her phone ringing jolted her from her thoughts. It was Marcus."I'm outside." He said simply when she picked up the phone, then he hung up almost immediately.Elena slowly made her way downstairs, clearing every thought of Gavin for the time being. It would be rude to be thinking of another man while in the presence of her boyfriend.Marcus was leaning against his car as he waited for her, he was spotting a blue designer suit today and some sunglasses. Once he saw Elena he opened her door for her before walking around to enter the car."For a minute there I thought you were not coming," Marcus said immediately after she got into the car."I took the day off as you suggested,""I did not suggest it. I told you to," Before Elena could reply, the revving of the engine cut her off."Why did you anyways?""Your job is too consuming," Marcus stated."So is yours." Marcus turned and stared at Elena for a moment."I am my boss, I choose when to work.""And you do it all the time,""But here I am, today.""Why?""You ask a lot of questions," Marcus said, an exasperated look on his face as he drove out of her street."You ignore my questions,""I knew you were sharp-mouthed and witty, but not to this extent." Elena wanted to start an argument with this and but he was too calm. Like she was a fly and he could flick her off with his fingers."You're still ignoring the question," Elena noted."Do you have a car?" Marcus asked suddenly."Yes, but it's broken down.""Do you want one?""Why do you keep offering to buy me things? First an apartment and now a car, you're putting me in your debt." Elena said, frustration in her tone."I never said you had to pay me back," Marcus said calmly as he took a right turn."I know but I am still in your debt.""Aren't partners supposed to help their partner out?" Elena was getting even more frustrated but Marcus kept his tone plain, and calm. "We are in a relationship, right?""In the official sense, yes.""Excuse me?" Marcus asked, staring at her from the corner of his eye."We— You— we have not even held hands and it's been three weeks since you asked me out. Is it going to take a year before you kiss me?" Elena gasped and covered her mouth. She did not mean for that to slip.Marcus parked the car almost immediately and Elena feared he was going to kick her out but he just turned to her, a blank look on his face."So our relationship is only in the official sense unless we kiss?" Elena did not know what to say again, she already hated herself for talking too much."I— I don't know."Marcus unbuckled his seatbelt and moved closer to her. " Do you want me to kiss you, Elena?""You have not given me an answer, Elena" Marcus said as he shifted closer to Elena, he tilted her chin up and made her look at him in his eyes."Is this not what you wanted?" Marcus asked, tilting his eyebrow."I—" Elena stuttered. She could not form words anymore. Her anger had died down in her throat and she was too confused to move. Was he going to kiss her? He had to be bluffing."If you're not comfortable enough then," his words sent shivers down her spine, his touch on her chin was the cause of the goosebumps on her skin. Why did he have such an effect on her? Why did she let him?Marcus shifted away without another word. He buckled his seat belt and continued driving, leaving Elena in awe. "Why— why did you do that?""Because you wanted me to? I'm sorry if I invaded your personal space but you complain a lot, and I thought if I gave you what you wanted then you would not complain anymore."Elena gaped at him. "I do not complain a lot."Marcus did not say anything in return he
"Excuse me?" Elena asked. The cafe suddenly felt hotter."You heard me," Isabel said, she maintained a predator look in her eyes but she still looked annoyed."I don't think I understand what you mean." Elena shifted in her seat, she was becoming uncomfortable by the moment and kept glancing towards the restrooms hoping Marcus would come out and end her misery."Why would he date you? You do not look like his type. Are you a model?" Elena shook her head, the intimidating stare Isabel gave her made her squirm in her seat."You are not a model, of course. You do not even look like one. So what is it that attracts him? You are not that beautiful, I mean, just look at your cheeks." Elena's hands instinctively went up to her face."Have you heard of the word diet?""Excuse me?" Elena asked, her cheeks heating up with anger and embarrassment."I'm not trying to be mean or anything it's just that there is nothing physically attractive about you." Isabel stood up, she seemed happy to have acc
"You don't like sushi, do you?" Marcus asked, noticing the sour look on Elena's face as she moved her food around."I hate to be ungrateful but the idea of raw fish freaks me out." Marcus's lips tilted up a little in a smile. "I guess that's on me, what would you like? I'll order something else. What about Chinese food?""I love Chinese food," "Give me a minute." He stood up and walked towards his landline to make a call while Elena sat back staring at the platter of food. She and Marcus had talked more throughout the day than in their entire relationship of weeks and it made her feel giddy. And now he was ordering Chinese food for her.Her mind immediately went back to Gavin. She was surprised she had not thought about him most of the day, last night felt like everything but today her mind was only on Marcus and their little moment in the car."Food will take thirty minutes," Marcus said once he came back. "I'll go put these in the freezer. Meanwhile you can pick out a movie or some
Brunch was tense and uncomfortable. You could feel the tension weighing on them both as the sounds of cutlery making contact with plates came into play."So, your sister. How is she?""She is doing well. Her surgery is in two weeks so we're just hopeful.""Hopeful?" Marcus asked with confusion all over his face."This is going to be her third one this year. It's all the same I guess, we're just hoping that she's lucky and gets back on her feet after this one." "I'm sorry to hear that," Elena nodded. She didn't have anything to say, she was just trying desperately to get out of her headspace and the voices that were taunting her."Are you okay?" Marcus asked, his blank stare scanning her face. That question was the final straw, it almost broke her. At that moment she could have started shedding tears but she didn't."I think I should go, Marcus.""Oh." She stood up abruptly and almost bumped down the table. "I'm sorry,""Do you need a ride?""I'll manage." She murmured and made her w
"Sorry my apartment is a bit cramped and not appealing," Elena blushed with embarrassment as Gavin's tall frame walked into her home."No worries. My mom and I had almost the same kind when we were living together," Gavin was wearing a light blue shirt that hugged his body and exposed all his muscles and a pair of black jeans, he held a tub of coffee ice cream in one hand and an assortment of cookies and chocolates in the other. He carefully set it down on the centre table and smiled down at her."Before she got married to your stepdad?" "Yeah, she was just a single mother trying to make ends meet with her seven-year-old." Gavin reminisced about the old days, eating cold leftovers in the dark while his mother cried to the electricity company. "Uh, no offense to your home, it's not like I see you as a struggling single mother, which again would be fine. I'm a feminist," once the words left his mouth, he face-palmed himself.Elena burst out laughing at this, his facial expression was e
Marcus had been strained with work. His company was not making as much money as it used to and his father was on his neck; always criticizing every decision he made and silently judging him with his eyes.Marcus had never been a people pleaser but for his father, he would bend heaven and earth to receive a look of approval, it was that bad.A soft knock on the door interrupted his thoughts, he had been lost in them for a few days now, and it distracted him."Come in," Isabel walked into the large office. She had started dressing more suggestively ever since the coffee incident. That day she spotted a black camisole and a very short skirt, the suit jacket she had matched it with was long gone."Yes, Isabel?" Marcus raked his eyes down her very exposed body but immediately shifted them to his computer. Isabel smirked, a look of accomplishment on her face as she shut the door and strutted towards his table."Here are the files you requested earlier concerning the Singapore deal." She sai
"Somebody looks happy," Elena laughed and ignored her sister's comment, "It's good to see you too, sis.""I saw you a couple of days ago, you weren't that missed." Elena rolled her eyes and sat down at the edge of the hospital bed."How are you feeling?" She asked her sister."Tired; and I have been sleeping all day. Thanks for the flowers though," They both glanced towards the bouquet lying on the visitor's seat."Flowers? I didn't send any flowers, Em.""What? Yes, you did, with chocolates." Elena stood up and walked towards the bouquet. "Did you read the card?" "I didn't see any," Elena dug through the large bouquet of roses for the tiny card. "Here it is," "Read it out," Emily requested. "Yes, Your Highness." Elena mocked and Emily giggled. "It says, 'To Emily, I see you around the cafeteria and I think a girl like you deserves something beautiful for adding such beauty to the world, so here are some roses.' Oh my Wow." Elena turned to Emily, a wide smile on her face. "You ha
"What have you been up to today?" Elena noticed how tired and frustrated Marcus sounded over the phone. She had barely seen him for a week and he had only bothered to reach out a few times, She had tried on her part to call and text but whenever she called he barely picked up, and when he did he sounded like he was in a hurry to get off the phone and whenever she texted he would reply with a word or two or leave her on read. It started to make her wonder if it was because of the kiss he was behaving so distant and that possibility made her angry.Elena knew she was not in the right position to be angry at Marcus over anything, even ignoring her, because she had been having frequent meetings with Gavin over the past week that she had not seen Marcus. Gavin had been amazing, he was kind, and a good listener and he made Elena laugh every time they were together. She knew it was wrong, leading him on like that but with Marcus barely being present in her life except for aiding her financi
