KABANATA 3

I coughed—violently. Water came out of my lungs as I gasped and choked.

“What the hell were you thinking?!” marahas na boses ang nagpabalik sa akin sa reyalidad.

It was him! The man I had a one night stand with!

“Do you think that river was going to save you?! You think disappearing would erase everything?!” bulalas niya.

I just broke down and cried. The sobs that I’ve been holding in came out like a flood–matindi pa sa tubig na muntik nang kumuha sa buhay ko.

And then–I just froze for a moment.

He pulled me into his arms.

“You don’t get to give up,” he whispered in my ears sa pagitan ng aming yakapan.

“I won’t let you. Not when I’m here.”

I am soaking wet at kasalukuyan akong nakaupo sa kotse niya.

The car stopped in an underground parking lot.

High ceiling, spacious, and peaceful.

“Go take a shower and change your clothes first, you’re freezing to death,” inabot niya sa akin ang dala niyang towel at saglit pang natigilan.

“You don’t mind using my clothes for a while, do you?” pagkumpirma niya na sinagot ko lamang ng iling na may tipid na ngiti.

It seems like just yesterday when I last looked in the mirror and I looked like a princess from a fairytale.

I appeared to look that I had nothing left to live for. Perhaps that’s exactly who I was.

I caught up with him sitting in the dining room. Mukhang kakatapos lang din niya maligo and there are two cups of coffee already served on the table.

When he felt my presence, he looked at me and motioned for me to sit in front of him.

“How.. How did you find me?” I finally asked. Sandali siyang tumahimik at tumingin sa ‘kin bago sumagot.

“I asked my men to look for you,” walang emosyon nitong tugon.

“You left money on the bedside table as if I were just a man you hired for one night.” he said bluntly.

Napayuko na lang ako sa hiyang nararamdaman. Of course he was offended by what I did! What am I thinking?!

“That was not my intention, it's just that..” I paused for a moment, and took a deep breath before continuing.

“I just didn’t know how I was going to face you after what happened. And I thought, giving you money for the trouble I caused is enough,” mas napayuko ako at ramdam ko na ang pag-init ng mukha ko sa kahihiyan.

“Well, being treated like an item bothers me,” walang emosyon niyang saad.

“So, I had my men to look after you and with my connections, it didn’t take long.” he said it in a calm voice but full of power.

“Y-you–What?!”

“You thought you could hide from me after that night?” tumikhim siya bago magpatuloy.

“I don’t allow people leaving my life without giving me a hint or answer, Miss Syd.” tugon niya pa na mas ipinanlaki ng mga mata ko.

“H-how did you–?” hindi na niya ako pinatapos pa.

“I’ve already told you. Connections. Now give me the answers I want.”

“I wasn’t trying to hide from you,” I murmured. “I was trying to escape.”

He stared at me for a long second before his voice dropped, quieter this time.

“Escape what?”

My throat tightened.

“Everything.”

Agad akong yumuko. I blinked, then again, and again. Fighting the sting in my eyes.

“My own father abandoned me. My company got taken away from me. I was thrown away like I was never mattered.” nagsimula nang gumaralgal ang boses ko sa kabila ng pagpipigil na pumatak ang luha ko.

“And you think that jumping and throwing yourself into that river will fix everything?” I was stunned by his words. He said it right in front of my face too casually but with the hint of disappointment.

“I’ve seen a lot of broken people before, just different stories. They either fight or surrender,” huminto siya sandali ‘tsaka umiling.

“You choose the coward’s way.”

“So you think duwag ako?” my face tightened.

“Nope.” His voice slightly softened.

“I think you forgot who you were. And that was worse.”

His words silenced me. A sudden realization hit me. He paused for a moment, letting his words sink in before he finally spoke again.

“Do you want to get your life back?”

Napatingin ako sa kaniya. I didn’t say anything but my eyes says it all.

“Do you want your company, your reputation, and your dignity back?” he was dead serious while saying this.

“Of course,” I whispered.

“But I–” he doesn’t let me finish. His words cut me off.

“Then marry me.”

Alam ko na.Even before I saw his face, I already felt it—‘yung bigat sa dibdib na parang biglang gumaan, ‘yung hangin na naging mas mainit, mas buo. He stood there in silence, as if afraid to take a step forward. His dark hoodie clung to him in places, the edges damp, as if he’d run through rain. But none of that mattered, because his eyes—those dark, searching eyes—were locked entirely on one thing. Draven’s gaze softened in a way I’d never seen before. Walan

The light that had felt like home began to fade, slipping between my fingers like sand. I wanted to hold on, to anchor myself in that warmth, in her arms, but something stronger was pulling me away.“Go back, my brave Amara.”Her voice was the last thing that clung to me before everything dissolved. The air was different here—sterile, cold, sharp with the faint sting of antiseptic.

KABANATA 34Maliwanag.Hindi ‘yung nakakasilaw na liwanag ng ospital o ng araw sa tanghali, kundi ‘yung banayad at malambot na liwanag na bumabalot sa ‘yo na para bang niyayakap ka.I opened my eyes to find myself standing barefoot on soft grass—the kind that feels like velvet under your skin. The air was warm but crisp, carrying the faint fragrance of sampaguita and newly fallen rain. Somewhere in the distance, I heard laughter. Before me stretched an endless garden. The flowers glowed as if kissed by sunlight from a gentler world. The sky was pale gold, like morning caught forever in its first breath. She looked to be in her early to mid twenti

KABANATA 33The next contraction hit like lightning. Not a dull ache, not the gradual tightening I’d felt earlier in the day—this was a deep, bone-deep tearing that stole my breath before I could even cry out.I doubled over, my grip on the delivery bed’s rails turning white-knuckled. The fetal monitor beside me beeped erratically, too fast, then dipping lower than it should. The sound sliced through me sharper than the pain. The nurse glanced at the monitor, then at me, her polite smile faltering. “Doc..” the nurse’s voice was low but urgent.Dr. Vergara stepped closer, her white coat brushing softly against the bed as she scanned the monitor. Her gloved hand rested briefly on my wrist, grounding me.“Amara,” she said, her tone calm but deliberate. “Your contractions are coming very close together, and your baby’s heart rate is dropping in between. That tells me she’s getting tired in th

It was the kind of rain that clung to everything—light enough to blur the air into a constant haze, but steady enough to seep into the bones. Every drop against the roof was a soft percussion, a heartbeat for the quiet day. From my bedroom window, the world looked muted under a curtain of gray. The sampaguita vines drooped with beads of water clinging stubbornly to their petals. Even the distant hum of the road was muffled by the weather, as though the town had chosen to breathe slower.Umupo ako at yumukyok sa armchair na malapit sa bintana, a wool shawl draped loosely over my shoulders. My daughter shifted lazily inside me, as if restless from the weather. I rested my palm against the swell of my belly, feeling the faint push from within.

Four days since his voice shook as he told me he loved me. Four days since I told him that if he truly wanted me, it had to be his choice, not the contract’s.I thought the air would clear after that conversation. But it didn’t. It only thickened into silence. The days after Draven’s visit passed in a strange, quiet rhythm. He had left without promises, without pressing me for answers. But every night when I lay in bed, the echo of his confession would creep back in, stirring a storm I wasn’t ready to face. But she never asked. Instead, she kept me grounded with small, ordinary things—tea in the morning, fresh flowers in the vase by the window, and more stories about my mom.Until this morning.Nasa veranda ako, doing my usual sketching in my no
