“Your Highness, the dresses have arrived.”
Inside her room, Evie hugged her cinnamon-scented pillow tightly with a blissful smile playing on her face. She had had the same dream again—the dream that she had always longed for. She closed her eyes for a minute, ignoring the voice of the maid outside her grand chamber’s door to reminiscence. It was a large ball; just like the one her father was planning for her that evening, and a large crowd. And then, in the middle of it all, she finds her mate, who is stricken by her beauty at first sight, and they danced away for the rest of the evening. He was everything she wished for—a tall glass of hot chocolate with a cold aura that scared away other maidens except her. Throughout their dance, he had eyes only for her and wouldn’t stop showering her with praises of her beauty.
Evie sighed. It was a dream she had had since she was a child. As the princess of her clan, she had attended a few coming-of-age balls with her parents, and they had always been so magical. Two parts were her all-time favorite. The first is when the birthday girl’s wolf comes into full display and she is allowed to run into the woods for at least an hour to get used to her wolf side. Of course, if it was the daughter of a noble, a guard was sent after her to keep her safe and was in charge of bringing her back in exactly an hour to avoid keeping the guests waiting for too long. A big window is often designed for allowing her wolf jump over to the woods.
Her second all-time favorite was when the girl finally met her mate. From the gossip, she had heard several times that it all begins with a quickened heartbeat and the feeling of your wolf pushing you towards a particular direction; alongside a feeling of sudden excitement. Gosh! That part was her most favorite. She had often imagined herself in their shoes. A wedding is then announced before the end of the ball.
“Your Highness.” The maid outside called again, interrupting her train of thoughts. She frowned. If only she had gotten her super strength that comes with the first transformation, she would have thrown her down the balcony.
“Come in.” She pulled the bed spread over her body, making sure her petticoat was out of sight.
The big door opened, and her maid came in, pushing in a long trolley of dresses. At the sight of the dresses, Evie flung aside the large spread, jumping off the bed with a visible smile. She had even forgotten to scold the maid for interrupting her thoughts earlier.
That’s right! In a few hours, it was going to be her coming-of-age ball.
In a few hours’ time, she probably wouldn’t have to dream anymore. The man of her dream would be standing right before her, and just before the end of the ball, a wedding would be announced.
The thought made her smile.
“The Queen asked me to let you pick what you would wear for the evening.”
Evie clapped her hands in excitement, trying to hide her nervous side. “Great! Where is mother?”
“Inspecting the decorations in the hall, Your Highness.”
She swallowed. All her life, she had never had the chance to pick her own dress, and despite that it excited her, she was scared of making mistakes. “Tell mother to please come when she’s done?”
“Of course, Your Highness.”
The minute the maid went out, Evie jumped on her bed, pulling open the large curtains. Sure, it was busy outside. From the kitchen maids to the cleaning maids, all hands were on deck. It made her excitement grow. This was truly happening!
“Get off the bed, Evie.” A voice called behind her.
She turned quickly to see not just her mother but her father standing by the door too.
“Mother! Father!” She jumped off the bed to greet them.
“Happy birthday, Princess.” Her father told her in his usual cheerful tone. Perhaps she was being too skeptical, she could detect a trace of sadness in his voice. Was he sad? But why?
“Thank you, father.” She humored them, bowing like a princess. That did lighten up the atmosphere.
“We know we may not get the chance to do this later, so we got your present.” Her father announced.
Evie looked at the box in her father’s hands with so much curiosity. Each year since she was born, she has always received a present from them. this one looked a bit more special. “Thank you so much, father. Mother.”
With excitement coursing through her, she opened the box, her gaze shifting from her mother to her father. The moment she looked down on the box, a soft gasp escaped her lips. “No way!”
Her mother chuckled. “You like?”
“I love!” Starring back at her was golden necklace carrying the crest of their clan. It was a family heirloom that she had only heard about. “A-are you sure you want to give this to me?”
Her father patted her hair with a smile. “You are all grown up now. Probably, you’ll find your mate tonight. We want you to keep it as a token of your roots—your clan and your family.”
She caressed the piece of treasure gently, her eyes welling with tears. “Thank you so much, father.”
Her mother chuckled. It was hard to see Evie shed a tear. She had always been the strong one—even stronger than her dear mother. “As much as I’d love to see you finally shed some tears, we have to prepare for the ball. Come on now.”
Two hours before midnight, the almost quiet huge castle became bubbling with noises. Carriages trooped in, led by horsemen. Men and women of noble classes dressed in noble clothes. From her room, Evie could feel the liveliness of the ball herself. After picking out her dresses with her mother, she had spent the rest of the day doing nothing but looking outside the window, waiting to catch sight of the first set of guests that would come trooping in. When she finally caught sight of them after hours passed, a smile graced her face, and she paced around the room, practicing her dance steps.A knock on the door interrupted her. “Your Highness. Time to get dressed.”Of course, she was willing. Standing there in the middle of the room while the maids helped her into her dress; the first dress for the night. The other one would come after midnight; when her first shift was to take place. It was a gold, shimmering dress that reflected the rays of the moon perfectly. After her fitting, she r
Ronan watched the girl with hidden amusement all over his eyes. Perhaps, it was her brave front that attracted him. She clearly knew she was scared, but the minute their eyes met, she pretended she wasn’t. Truth be told, it hadn’t been a part of his plans to be there that night. He left in the middle of a meeting with the higher-ups of his large clan, following the lead of his wolf till he found himself at their doorstep. Although the two clans were enemies, they had never had any war in years and ignoring the fact that the actions may lead to a war, he entered the large hall, attracting everybody’s attention towards him. Like he always does.Seeing the princess reminded him of his own coming of age ball eons ago. It had been the best day of his life until time faded, and now he couldn’t recall most of the details. He could only recall the most painful part of the details. After his first shift, he returned to the hall, eager like every other person to meet the woman for him. Unfortu
Evie stood by the bathroom door with a frown. Her mate was inside the female bathroom? But how? Or maybe, she had overreacted. Perhaps it wasn’t time yet. However, just as she turned to return, the gnawing in her heart returned, pulling her towards the door. It was like a force she couldn’t resist or ignore. Again, she could feel her wolf trying to communicate with her. Whatever she wanted to say, Evie wished to know.Left with no choice, she pulled the door handle open and went in straight. The scene she met was the exact opposite of the ones in her dream. Although she had never dreamt of meeting her mate in a female bathroom, she had dreamt of meeting a prince charming who with all smiles, awaited her to come to him and gave her an embrace of acceptance the minute she did come to him. However, the scene before her was… At the far end of the bathroom was a man with his pants pooling at his feet and his phallus buried deep inside a lady; she looked like one from the lower noble famil
"Ha, Miss Cullen." Evie shook hands with one of the noblewomen who was a dear friend of her mother."Happy birthday, Princess. You're looking beautiful like usual." The woman said with a bright smile on her lips."Please don't flatter me, Milady. You're looking more beautiful." Evie looked down at the woman's blue dress that fitted her beautiful slender body. "Please stop it." The woman waved at her and turned to her mother. "She's so beautiful, just like you, Your Majesty." The woman chuckled. "Come on, Ethan. Entertain your friend we'll be back." And thus the women left, leaving them all alone."They have no idea don't they?" Ethan chuckled, as they both walked to the dance floor.Evie straightened her dress before they began the dance."They don't." Evie sighed, as they began to dance to the slow beautiful music of the orchestras."Have you seen him today? Or you haven't tried enough?" Her best friend asked. Well, Ethan and Gwendolyn were the only friends she could make since she
The morning was not as bright as usual. "Rise and Shine, your highness." This time it wasn't just Ethan in her room but also with Gwendolyn who had a smile on her face."Gwen." She called out, excitedly."Yes, your Highness. Of course, I have to be here when I didn't come last night. Tell me how it went down. I want to hear all of it." Gwen squealed as she jumped on the bed."You're going to have your coming-of-age party soon, Gwendolyn. How do you see yourself in the coming month?" Ethan asked, taking a seat on the chair."I want nothing but to see my mate standing inches away from me with a smile on his lips as I dance towards him with a flower in my hand. He must be handsome and very calm. I don't want a violent man, I'll kill him myself." "Such high standards for little you," Ethan commented, earning a scowl from Gwen who bent down to their him a shoe."Tell me how everything went, Evie. I'm so dying to know." Gwen begged, palming her hands together as she wanted nothing but the
Evie stormed to the throne room and thankfully her parents were seated there, talking about the same war."Evie?""A war?" Evie asked. "Why go to war now?" She was sure everything was fine a few days ago. Her father had made sure to stay away from his clan and any boundary whatsoever. She didn't like that they were going to go to war again."Mother, can you debrief me on this, please?" Her mother didn't look any happy at all.She looked devastated by the news."Not now, Princess." The Queen mumbled, following up on the news she had heard."But Mom, you should know that I'm old enough to know about the Kingdom's affair. Most importantly, about a war looming up." She didn't back down like her mother wanted her to, but instead pushed it further. "Go to your room. I'll send some items to you and your friends." Her mother dismissed her with a wave of her hand.Evie couldn't sit back and do anything. She had never been curious about wars before, but this was the first time, and like they s
"He's my mate." She said again, waiting for her parents to process what they had just heard."We don't understand what you're talking about, Evie. Are you saying that Ethan is your mate?" Her mother asked again."Not Ethan, Mom. Alpha Ronan." She replied, her eyes went damp with tears. She surely didn't like the look in her mother's eyes. The woman wasn't happy at all and she didn't like the fact that no one was saying a word."Mother? Father?" She called. Her mother laughed. "I'm sure you're wrong, baby. I would have caught on that if it were true. I have a strong sense of judgment, sweetie." Her mother waved her off like it wasn't something they had to talk about."This isn't some judgemental case, Mom. He's my mate, and we met that day in the female bathroom. He's my mate, we both felt it... that's why he left early that day." She explained."I don't understand this, Evie. Why didn't you tell us about this then? Why did you keep it within yourself? Does anyone know about this?" He
The fight was becoming more fierce than he had ever wanted. He would have stopped but then the stupid king had to bring in more troops and that had taken a lot of men from his side.He had to fight back, he wouldn't want to be called weak.Alpha Ronan stood in front of his armies. His huge mighty men of valor. Men that had been through all principalities and hardships of the world.Men that had conquered the world by his side. His thoughts drifted to the ball that was held days ago.The little princess was dancing with someone else..her friend perhaps. He couldn't help but wonder why the moon goddess, out of everyone in the world, would give him something so weak, fragile, and a daughter of his one and only enemy. He wasn't going to end this fight till the stupid king called a truce. He was one step away from breaking through the gates and claiming the whole Kingdom as his."Your Majesty." He looked up, eyes dark and brows creased. He waited patiently for the news."They've sent men.
