Chapter 54

Ashes and Echoes

Adelaide’s POV

“Is… is it true she’s coming here?”

The question drifted off from the villagers before I even stepped down from the carriage.

It wasn't a too long journey, but I was already tired.

No, I mustn't show weakness. I said internally, my eyes scanning the whole place.

“Is that the Luna?”

The voice belonged to a young woman clutching a child to her chest. She wasn’t speaking to me directly. She spoke to the healers unloading supplies, to the guards securin

Chapter 60The Witch Visits The Luna Adelaide’s POV “Kaius?” I called, moving closer to the body the soldiers held. “My lady, you can't see him..” Paula held me, trying to stop me with a little shake of her head. “Is that really him?!” I kept moving, ignoring her completely. The courtyard felt too loud and too quiet at the same time, soldiers shouting and boots slamming against stone, but none of it made sense because all I could see was the body they carried between them.Four men carrying a man, whose hand looked too loose to be alive. My heart stopped beating. “Kaius!” I shouted again, my voice breaking as I pushed past two guards who tried to block me.They lowered the body near the fountain as I dropped to my knees immediately. That was when I saw his face, it wasn't Kaius at all. The breath I didn’t know I was holding left me in a rush as my vision blurred. The scout lying there was young, barely older than a boy. His neck was bent wrong and his eyes appeared too cold like

Chapter 59The Confrontation Adelaide’s POV I couldn't get my mind off the sound I was hearing outside. I kept peeping out of the window, hoping I'd see Kaius by the slightest chance.I clasped my fingers together, “is Kaius alright out there?” Suddenly, the door opened and Paula rushed in almost immediately. I rushed to meet her half way too, staring straight into eyes.“Paula, what's the situation of things out there? Where's the alpha?”My voice came out tighter than I meant it to. I stood near the center table in my chambers, tapping my fingers on it. Paula stood near the door, her hands clasped together in front of her apron. She had been avoiding my eyes since she rushed in, and that alone told me something was wrong.“Your Majesty… you should sit,” she said softly.“No,” I replied immediately. “Not until you tell me where Kaius is.”She inhaled slowly, as if searching for the right words.“Paula.”“He left to find the witch,” she finally said. The words landed like a blow.

His hand slid to the back of my neck, gentle but firm.“Adelaide…” he said my name like it meant something fragile and sacred at the same time.My fingers slowly curled into the front of his shirt, holding onto him without thinking. He leaned closer that I could feel his breath. But, just before our lips met, a loud knock slammed against the chamber door and both of us froze.Another knock came, urgent this time.“Alpha! Emergency message from the border scouts!”Kaius cursed under his breath, pulling back immediately. His hand dropped from my neck, but his eyes stayed locked on mine.“Come in,” he called sharply. The door opened, and one of the guards rushed inside, bowing quickly.“Alpha, we have movement along the eastern bo

For a minute, she looked at me, her mouth a bit open.“I… I… uhm thank you, I should head back now.” She said and when she saw the guards and maids staring, she ran off. “Adela….” I called, but she was already far gone. I turned and the guards snapped into position, as though they hadn't been staring. “Didn't I tell you to tell the guards and maids to retreat for a few minutes?!” I said to Rafaello, who was standing close to me. “I'm sorry Alpha, I misunderstood you…” he said. I had wanted to display something for my mother, I wanted her to see how much I cherish Adelaide, so she wouldn't bring up awkward statements again.“Next time, pay more attention!” I said and walked away almost immediately. “Alpha…” Rafaello called, running after me. ____Adelaide's POV “Do you like this style?” Paula asked, as the comb traced my hairline. “Do anything that sui

I moved quickly outside to meet her and I stopped at the entrance waiting for her to get closer.“You should not have gone alone. I hope you weren't stressed that much…”The words left my mouth, before I even realized I had spoken.Adelaide stopped just inside the palace entrance, dust still clinging faintly to the hem of her dress. She turned toward me, surprise crossing her face. Then her lips curved into a smile like she hadn’t expected me to be standing there waiting.“I wasn’t alone,” she said softly. “Your guards followed every step I took. I could barely breathe without them shifting.”I crossed the distance between us without thinking, as my boots echoed. I stopped very close to her, my eyes moving over her whole body searching for any scratch. She noticed. Of course she noti
